Bucs HC defends lack of free agent signings

Even though Florio and crew at PFT are bordering on sensationalist, they still report things most of us wouldn't ordinarily see.

Case in point is this article outlining Raheem Morris' response to the lack of TB's pursuit of free agents. Particularly Michael David Smith's comment in the fourth paragraph that free agency and building through the draft aren't "mutually exclusive."

Raheem Morris defense lack of free agent signings

We get that Buffalo isn't going to pursue the name free agents, and that's fine. But it's not illegal to build depth at the beginning of a massive rebuilding project. This could be a matter of being patient for the lower tier guys and waiting them out wrt contracts. But if the team ends up with only a handful of players who don't make the roster, that's not OK.

Besides, even Dick Levy went out and signed a bunch of depth guys in 2006, albeit in most cases at absurd prices. See: Price, Peerless and Tripplett, Larry.

And how did we do with them? Where are they now? Nuff said.

You do realize everyone's favorite scapegoat John Guy was on-board back then? And that Dick Jauron had a sizable say in Levy's communal approach to rebuilding?

Signing free agents doesn't mean they'll be great, but it doesn't mean that capable people can't find talent to build the team.

Everything on this board is either black or white to far too many posters.

Was it the wrong strategy or the did we just sign the wrong players?

The strategy is good if you sign the right players. However if the right players aren't there..don't force it.

Believe it or not there some GM's out there that know what they are doing.

We just haven't had them recently. Not sure how to judge the present staff as of yet.

The problem with our free agent signings over the last number of years is not that we signed free agents, but that we signed the wrong free agents and overpaid for them. We need better talent evaluation, whether it is for the draft or available free agents.

We will need to sign some free agents to compete next year, whether they are depth or starters. We do not have enough draft picks to fill all of our needs.

Who the hell is Dick Levy? Marv Jauron's cousin?

It's Bill from NYC's term for the failed logic and tenure behind the Marv Levy and Dick Jauron pairing from 2006-2007. And then, when Levy retired, the term continued on, because Jauron (as Levy's hire) continued making poor decisions with non-GM Russ Brandon leading the way.

Dick Levy is a shortened version of this.

I liked this comment which is about halfway down the page;

The average career in the NFL is 3.5 seasons so how do you plan for long-term winning based on roster.

Only fans of long term losers care about long term winning. Fans of long term winners care about winning a championship."

Very very true if you ask me. The Bills and their fans are always trying to get younger and trade for draft picks and not resigning their vets because they are "too old" We have been spinning our wheels since AJ Smith and co left.
