Pine Barrens Mafia Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 In the Bakken Formation, there is an estimated 3.6 BILLION barrels of oil that are technically recoverable. That seems like an awful lot of oil to be leaving out on the table, especially given how much money we export to the middle east. Any of you brainiacs out there knowledgeable on the issues surrounding this oil reserve and why we're not taking advantage of it?
/dev/null Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 The Bakken Formation sounds like military tactic used in Star Trek
Doc Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 From what I remember, the oil is inside shale, not in a massive oil lake, and it's very difficult/expensive to recover it using existing technology.

The last paper I read on it said oil needed to approach $5 a gallon to make it a viable option.

Considering all the money the Fed is printing $5 gas will feel like be a bargain. Would you like fries with your $10 Extra Value Menu Cheeseburger

DC Tom Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Funny, I just read an article today about how they're developing it, and how it's resulting in Native Americans returning to the Indian reservations because of the availability of well-paying jobs there.

They're turning the Bakken Foundation into a casino? Right on.

Booster4324 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 The Bakken Formation sounds like military tactic used in Star Trek I was thinking it sounded like something Ackbar would say, "Assume the Bakken formation."
Nanker Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I was thinking it sounded like something Ackbar would say, "Assume the Bakken formation." I was thinking it was a foundation of Gailey's new offense he wants to implement. By all means, it should be developed! On another note, I thought oil shale was environmentally unfriendly and therefore unprofitable, indefensible and incorrigible.
Doc Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I was thinking it sounded like something Ackbar would say, "Assume the Bakken formation." Or a drill sergeant saying "get Bakken formation."
