Nanker
Jobs Program in reverse. Revised projections now show that about 23,000 workers at and around Kennedy Space Center will lose their jobs because of the shuttles' retirement and the new proposal to cancel the development of new rockets and spacecraft. Of course it's "healthcare" that's got the attention of Washington right now. That's what's really important. People need expensive "free-to-me" healthcare, not jobs. Of course jobs are a byproduct of evil capitalism. Everything that is wrong with the nation can be linked to people with jobs. Jobs will be the ruination of this country. People need to look to the government to fulfill their every waking need. People with jobs resist government intervention in their lives and its control of their life choices. Hopefully, there is a profitable, practical reason for a Shuttle like vehicle to operate. I know the Moon itself is supposed to be the next big resource for mining. Is this enough motivation for the private sector to take over space exploration and exploiting it for resources? I would think a lot of these NASA experienced people would be scooped up. Just thinking out loud. On the healthcare thing Nanker, I'm with you. More people depend on the government the more powerful and pervasive it will become. It's a shame the US, once a beacon of free enterprise and freedom, is being dumbed down and castrated to be just another socialist euro clone. It would definitely be a very expensive, high risk attempt at extracting resources. Probably won't be developed for a very long time...
blzrul
So an expensive govt program shuts down with the intent to transition to private sector, and suddenly it's a problem?
IDBillzFan
Fear not. Nancy Pelosi said that when the health care bill is passed, it will immediately create 400,000 jobs. We'll get some of those space folks working desk jobs to get the government health care plan in place. If you can send a rocket into space, surely you can decide whether the government can afford to give grandpa a new hip!
/dev/null
So an expensive govt program shuts down with the intent to transition to private sector, and suddenly it's a problem? Cutting part of a successful $17B program a year after borrowing $800B from China for "Stimulus" is like congratulating yourself for realizing that you can save money money by downgrading from Premium Gas to Midgrade Gas in your brand new Hummer
BillsFan-4-Ever
When you have Lockheed Martin continually over budget and years late on schedule -- what more can you expect? LM and their new Crew Module program (replacement for shuttle) initial test launch is 2 1/2 years late!!! More wastful spending so you can bit ch some more about Obama? NASA will persue alternate endevors in science missions. Under a new five-year program for the 2011-2015 period, NASA intends to stimulate the development of advanced technologies and new business models, building the foundation for 21st Century solar system exploration, Earth climate monitoring and environmental protection, and next-generation aerospace workforce inspiration and education. By working in innovative new partnerships with U.S. industry and academic institutions, NASA will maintain America’s leadership in space while also contributing substantially to our country’s economic well-being. • Extension of U.S. participation in the International Space Station (ISS) program until at least 2020, with a more aggressive program of scientific research and utilization to be carried out at the multi-national orbital facility; • Strengthening of NASA’s current initiatives in commercial cargo delivery to the ISS, together with exciting new partnerships with private industry to develop and operate commercial astronaut transportation systems for low-orbit missions; • Increased funding for Earth and space science programs, with special emphasis on accelerated and expanded climate change research missions; and • Enhanced R&D investments by the space agency in new launch vehicle propulsion and in-space operations technologies and related robotic precursor missions to the Moon, Mars, asteroids and other deep-space destinations. TheMadCap
A large part of the reason Constellation was chosen as the "replacement" for the STS was that the large workforce associated with keeping it flying would be carried over. We are light years away from being able to efficiently and cost effectively being able to mine the moon or any other other-worldly body for resources at present... Please don't take this as a comment directed toward you, because I realize where that statement came from. But that is utter rubbish. How exactly will the US maintain it's leader status when we essentially have NO manned program, which is what the current plan details?

/dev/null
Shouldn't we prioritize on this before the Xindi attack??? The Xindi won't attack until after the NX-01 Enterprise has entered service. The warp engines of the NX-01 Enterprise are based off the work of Captain Archers father which in turn are based off the work of Zefram Cochrane. Zefram Cochrane's launch which precipitated first contact with the Vulcans was almost prevented by a temporal incursion by the Borg. So we should be focusing on the coming Borg attack Resistance is Futile

I'll leave it to Conner. He's the king of fake science. Also I suggest (if you haven't seen it) to watch the BBC documentary, " a space voyage". Watched it this week and it's well done.
