Speaker question

If you buy a 5.1 surround sound for your TV, is it OK or not recommended to use that for your stereo - CDs, etc.?

You sure can but if 2-channel sound is important to you, I would get some kick-ass front speakers as part of that 5.1 system.

Thanks! I guess I have to figure out what 2 channel sound is to see if it's important to me!

You aren't hurting anything at all. Usually, in a 5.1 system, the rear two speakers are only used to create background noise, while the front middle is for voices. However, it's all irrelevant for audio because most audio cd's are programmed for 2-channel stereo. You will be hearing the music as it was intended, the other 3 speaks simply aren't necessary. If you want, then put your receive on Pro-Logic mode, and that will duplicate the sound on the rear speakers as well, filling the room better.

Like Mr.Info said, it's recommended that your front two speakers are your best two. Then a sub, then your center channel, then the rears.
