The Kindle app has been on the iPhone for at least a year. Works in a pinch but not a reading solution.

I was thinking it would be a great time killer in an airport.

I have an iPhone and I have a book program and it does a job on my eyes. After a few pages, I've had enough and can't stand reading anymore. I bought my mother a Kindle for Christmas and she absolutely loves it, I guess it's really easy on the eyes.

Yeah, the Kindle doesn't look like a traditional computer screen - it's like a piece of paper (and uses eInk technology).

There's another app called classics that has a bunch of classics built in for reading on the iPhone. Not great but exactly as you say: a time killer when trapped without a book.
