Gerry Rafferty's "Baker's Street."

When I think of that song, I think of the sax solo. But there is some decent wailing guitar there too, I think.

The sax is great as well. And I don't know if it would qualify as a "top 5" solo, but one that I like. Among a lot of others.

SRV - "Texas Flood"

Clapton - "Let It Rain" - one of my my all time favorites - the solo at the end sometimes literally just makes me break out in a smile like some insane goofball

Knopfler - "Sultans" is one of those songs that I think has lost luster from overplay/familiarity - but then you hear it again and listen close and get blown away all over again. Used to love this band - some great solos on "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Once Upon a Time in the West" - God, now I want to pull out all my old Dire Straits CDs (LPs?) (was always amazed the restraint Knopfler showed playing - you knew if he wanted he could go completely off the wall - but sometimes knowing when to be subtle can have such a stronger impact)

Betts - "Ramblin' Man" - another overplayed standard - but still when you hear that solo no matter how familiar when you pay attention it moves you. Same with "Blue Sky" and "Jessica"

Neil Young - "Like a Hurricane" (Live Rust) - crank it so your teeth rattle

Richard Thompson - 'Shoot Out The Lights'

Hand of Kindness is excellent, too.

Very underrated musician, IMO. He really isn't known for blazing solos, for the most part, but he sure can play. Here he is having a little fun:

Dean I think you can appreciate the talent this guy has. I found a homemade CD in a parking lot in San Diego. It completely blew me away. The electric acoustic guitar skills this guy has are god given. He is such a troubadour that he probably wont get commercial success. But he should have it. If you ever get the chance to see him on his rare american visits go and see him. He shows up in San Fran every so often. I've tried to get him to return to San Diego.

Terrific. Not rock, of course, but excellent musicianship.

BTW, did you know Charo (the "cuchi-cuchi" girl) can play the guitar?

It's tough to ignore Elliot Randall's solo on Reelin in the Years.

Great song, always felt that Knopfler was a little underrated.

Too true, he was a very respected studio musician before Dire Straits. He performs on Bob Dylan's "Slow Train Coming" album. His work on Precious Angel is awesome.

Comfortably Numb or Money...

Knopfler is oft forgot about, but an excellent player and a little underrated

The riff Gilmour came up with for Money makes that song.

try this on for size ....

One of my best friends uncles taught Charo to play the guitar.
