I count at least two games we lost directly to our special teams play this year. (Cleveland and N.E.) I also recall a fake punt we didn't convert. Where did we rank on everything this year. I think he could have been better than Wes Welker if he'd played the WR position from day 1. Anyone else remember the Dolphins game where he had 3 reverses for about 90 yards? I think that was also the game where he made Bryan Cox so crazy that Cox lost his mind and was thrown out of the game. Supposedly Kelly lobbied for him to play receiver but Levy thought he was too valuable on Sts to risk injury on offense. That pretty much shows why he should be a HOFer IMO. And I'm surprised about Wendling and Fine. I think Stupar stepping up made Fine expendable. Wendling was a stud STer but DeHaven must feel he is replaceable. Wow - you totally and completely whiffed on the point of the original post I'd rather have a good offense or defense. A good special teams hasn't been to [sic] helpful the last nine years anyway The point is who cares if the Bills ST was in the top part in some statistically cateories over parts of the last decade if the team has consistently sucked and missed the playoffs that whole time. April benefitted from a policy (of his urging - for obvious reasons) of keeping too many ST specialists on the roster who were worthless as positional players - which hurt the team. I would much rather have a good team with mediocre (or even bad) STs that actually makes the playoffs over a bad team with STs that every once comes in high in some STs statistical category (We're number three in net punt average! - Yay!). A 5th string WR or safety that contributes on special teams is far more valuable than a better positional player who sits on the bench and reads magazines during the game because there are 4 guys ahead of him. Again, maybe I don't get it, but cutting key players from the best unit on your team over the past few seasons, without even giving them a training camp, doesn't seem like a good way to improve. WhiteCat Posted February 17, 2010 Share Posted February 17, 2010 Of all the cuts,the only one to raise any eyebrows would be Wendling- the others are guys who just didn't/can't contribute enough outside of special teams to justify keeping them. I'm pretty sure our two special teams coaches would have been part of the process on who to cut- obviously Wendling et al, just weren't good enough special teamers to keep, unlike a Tasker or a Mark Pike. This looks like a big FU to April and Levy and the silly Special Teams emphasis that has got the Bills nowhere. Think Scott Norwood. In the NFL today, teams like Indy and new Orleans and the Jets just go for it on 4th down half the time, sometimes don't even kick off (see the Super Bowl and Shawn Payton). We need players who can contribute depth to the offense or defense. I like Wendling as a gunner, but did he ever play safety? Keep the damn cuts coming, Buddy. I'm sure the Bills have their eyes on some bottom tier UFA's who can help on ST. Probably guys they are familiar with. Anyway, I like the idea they already rid themselves of these guys. If they realistically weren't going to see playing time outside of ST's and not make the final roster this will give them a chance to fully explore other opportunities.... These players are the epitome of the Jauron era and likely wouldn't be on any other NFL team. These players (and many others on the roster) are directly related to this team being sub par over the past 10 years. We sacrifice our 3rd and 4th string LB's for guys like Palmer, Corto, and other guys like Wendling for our 5th best safety so that we can have decent special teams play. Its a joke, and it was proven as most of our LB's went down this season and we moved one of our safeties to LB because Palmer wasnt as good. Thats just great. On top of it, April proved that with some minor rule changes he was not the genius that everyone thought he was. Maybe he was a product of his players, like Roscoe Parrish and Leodis McKelvin. Isnt it funny that our special teams sucked and Leodis was injured, McGee barely played (because hes old and beat up and too high of a risk for KR because of this), Roscoe proved that hes not so great (IMO hes getting old, losing some speed and elusiveness) and turning into any other stud KR/PR in the league in recent memory. Wheres Dante Hall now? Wheres Devin Hester. Thats right, Hester is playing WR, because he actually has some decent football skill and hes not 170lbs soaking wet. He weights 190, which is pretty darn close to being normal size for an NFL WR. Roscoe weights 170. There are highschool players that weight that much. Let April and Dicky pick some of these guys up on the Eagles. I could care less. Guys like this hurt our roster for actual players that mean anything. Any scrub can make ST's in the NFL. And thats why no one is in the HOF. Its a joke unless your a supreme talent. And that doesnt happen often. Get rid of guys like Kelsey, Schobel, Mitchell, Whitner and Parrish too. These guys arent good enough to start on good teams in the NFL. Mitchell was the 4th best LB for the Giants in a 3-4. Thats not saying much. He was the weak link of their LB's who happened to have a great game in the Super Bowl. Yeah, hes had 3 games like that in 2 years with us. Its a joke.
