Mark Vader Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 The Oscar nominations have been announced leaving many people scrambling to catch up on what they have missed. For those who are interested in moving forward with the current year's movies, are hoping to find something good this month. Traditionally February, like January, is a dumping ground month for movie studios. However, they still try to get some products out that will have audiences talking, before the Spring Season bring it's bigger line-up. Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio team-up for the fourth time, in the thriller "Shutter Island". When a psychotic killer disappears from a mental institution on Shutter Island, a pair of U.S. Marshals race against the clock in order to track her down. Scorsese & DiCaprio have found a great rapport with each other, with their previous team-up's leading to many Oscar nominations. Instead of a biopic or a heavy drama, they both venture into psychological thriller territory. Fans will be curious to see how this plays out, but Paramount Pictures' decision to move this film from last November to February could be a troubling sign. Also starring Mark Ruffalo & Emily Mortimer. Universal Pictures finally releases it's overdue remake of their classic monster movie, "The Wolfman". Nobleman Lawrence Talbot (Del Toro) returns to his ancestral homeland, where his brother has gone missing and villagers are being killed by a nightmarish beast. The search reunites him with his estranged father (Hopkins) and draws him near to his brother's fiancée. The journey of this film has been an epic one. From November 2008 to February 2009 to April 2009 to Christmas 2009 to Valentine's Day weekend 2010, this movie has had many wondering why the constant release date changes spanning over 15 months? It's been some time since there has been a traditional monster movie, we'll see if Universal's strategy will pay off. Starring Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins & Emily Blunt. Director Chris Columbus, who hit it big with the first two installments of the Harry Potter series now takes a stab at another fantasy book series with "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief". A teenager discovers he's the descendant of a Greek god and sets out on an adventure to settle an on-going battle between the gods. Trailers look good and buzz has been building, yet 20th Century Fox is being cautious in it's approach, as Percy Jackson is not as big as Harry Potter, so gigantic numbers at the box office is not guaranteed. Still the interest is there, and families are always looking for something they all can enjoy. Starring Logan Lerman, Kevin McKidd, Steve Coogan, Pierce Brosnan, Catherine Keener, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Joe Pantoliano & Roasario Dawson. The month of February would not be complete without a schmaltzy romantic comedy coming out around the 14th. So New Line Cinema brings us the smartly titled, "Valentine's Day". Intertwining couples and singles in Los Angeles break-up and make-up based on the pressures and expectations of Valentine's Day. I know what your thinking. "Did'nt they release "He's Just Not That Into You" exactly one year ago?" Apparently it wo'nt matter, as the ensemble cast this time around is even larger. Starring Jessica Alba, Kathy Bates, Jessica Biel, Bradley Cooper, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Hector Elizondo, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Topher Grace, Anne Hathaway, Carter Jenkins, Ashton Kutcher, Queen Latifah, Taylor Lautner, George Lopez, Shirley MacLaine, Emma Roberts, Julia Roberts, Bryce Robinson & Taylor Swift. Roman Polanski is back with "The Ghost Writer". A ghostwriter hired to complete the memoirs of a former British prime minister uncovers secrets that put his own life in jeopardy. Starring Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Williams, Kim Cattrall, Timothy Hutton, Tom Wilkinson, James Belushi & Eli Wallach. Director Kevin Smith releases his latest comedy "Cop Out". About two cops whose adventures include locating a stolen baseball card, rescuing a woman, and dealing with gangsters and their laundered money. Starring Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Michelle Trachtenberg, Rashida Jones, Jason Lee, Seann William Scott & Kevin Pollak. John Travolta & Jonathan Rhys Meyers star in "From Paris With Love". In Paris, a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador hooks up with an American spy looking to stop a terrorist attack in the city. Yet another horror remake pops up this month with "The Crazies". About the inhabitants of a small Iowa town suddenly plagued by insanity and then death after a mysterious toxin contaminates their water supply. Starring Timothy Olyphant, Radha Mitchell & Danielle Panabaker. In "Dear John", A romantic drama about a soldier who falls for a co-ed while he's home on leave. Their relationship is tested in the wake of the September 11th terrorist attacks, an event that causes him to re-enlist for service. Starring Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried & Richard Jenkins. stuckincincy Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 "The month of February would not be complete without a schmaltzy romantic comedy coming out around the 14th." Credit due you, for using the adjective, schmaltzy But nothing wrong with that ilk, now and again. A light-hearted time at a theater, with a big bucket of movie popcorn, a box of Sno-Caps, that half-gallon of pop - sometimes, just what Dr. Mindless ordered!

Seen that one, when I see commercials for V-Day though, I think it'll be more like Love Actually than Not Into You.
Mark Vader Posted February 12, 2010 Author Posted February 12, 2010 Seen that one, when I see commercials for V-Day though, I think it'll be more like Love Actually than Not Into You. You are probably right about that. The similarity with Not Into You is mostly the timing,(coming out one year apart) and the large ensemble cast.
Just Jack Posted February 28, 2010 Posted February 28, 2010 Finally saw Valentines Day this weekend, it was okay in my opinion. Some surprises with the characters, like the QB character, and who Julia Roberts was going home to see. Overall, I'd see it again if it's on TV, but it doesn't measure up to Love Actually.
