If they must be traded, get player(s) for them who can contribute. Draft picks just mean more rebuilding. 2) Schobel is not to slow to play OLB in a 3-4. 3) He will probably retire rather than start over at a new position, for a new coaching staff, for a team that is rebuilding (again) but I hope that he doesn't. 4) If he comes back, he will be successful (barring injury) because he is a talented player. In fact, I would worry much less about him making the move to OLB than Maybin. I know that Schobel can rush the QB and make plays because I've seen it. Maybin on the other hand... BB-Gun Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 I think they keep him as a pass rushing specialist - meaning he only plays on obvious passing downs and will most likely rush the passer on 95% of those plays. They will probably move him around a bit (from side to side) and also play a few four man fronts so he can rush with his hand down. They will not ask him to defend the run in obvious running situations and will probably only ask him to cover a flat in a zone blitz type situation. I do think he will be able to cover the short area, since he did a lot of that under Williams when we played a zone blitz almost exclusively. I think the move to a 3-4 is to help disguise things better, but the overall philosophy of the defense (i.e. 1 gap) will stay the same. They will probably try to incorporate more 2 gap principles as they get the players to do so. I could see the defense trying to create matchups while rushing, so I expect all pass rushers to be moved around a bit. If the new coaches want to, and can do as you wrote, I'd be ecstatic. I would love for them to be this creative with the personnel we currently have, plus a few new pickups. We wouldn't have to scrap all our front 7 players since they don't fit into the traditional 3-4 style. Instead of spending the next 3 years re-tooling the defense, we may be able to do it in 1 year. Remember Peters? People wanted him traded, me included. Then a lot of people on this message board started blasting them for trading Peter, without having a proven LT to replace him. Is his value in a trade or as an OLB. OLB: yes, he is small, and a pass rusher. Can he follow a receiver or TE on a seam route? Can he read zone coverage? Is he fluid in his hips to turn and run in coverage? I know many say he will be a "pass rush specialist." what is this exactly? It sounds like they expect him to play DE again. If that's the case why really switch even. That 4th man with his hand off the ground is supposed to be a wildcard, not just a pass rusher. Trade: older, large contract -- played well last year, and many of the 10 before tho. Might gain worth for a final 8 team. Someone like the saints who will likely be replacing a DE, and can't chase a free agent might be inclined to trade for one. I see him likely gone, even though I'm a big fan. It's much easier for a 20 yr old to make that switch then a 30 something. Hopefully we can get good value for him. Player for player and get an RFA in here with experience in the system, or a first day pick? RFAs cost draft picks, likely a 1st if not a 1st and 3rd. Given that Buffalo's front office can only sign one guy at a time (see Evans and Peters in 08) most likely they removed themselves from pursuing other UFA's in Dick Levy's first foray into an offseason together. sharper802 Posted February 7, 2010 Share Posted February 7, 2010 Anyone who thinks a 33 year old is gonna move to olb is crazy. Especially Schobel with his personality. He was great while we had him. He was an unfortunate lifer of th 2000's. Mike Vrabel made the switch albeit at at around age 29. Schobel is/was a much much better DE than Vrabel ever was, similair size, and Schobel is faster. It can be done though won't be easy. Stroud could be a beast as a 3-4 DE. Too tall and not wide enough for NT. Need to get atleast a serviceable NT in FA or draft. I expect him to post double digit sacks again...and I expect Aaron Maybin to surprise some people as well. If Jason Taylor could make the switch, I am sure Aaron Schobel can.
