NoSaint Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 So this is a topic in about 3 active threads so why not consolidate -- where does Aaron schobel fit next year. Is his value in a trade or as an OLB. OLB: yes, he is small, and a pass rusher. Can he follow a receiver or TE on a seam route? Can he read zone coverage? Is he fluid in his hips to turn and run in coverage? I know many say he will be a "pass rush specialist." what is this exactly? It sounds like they expect him to play DE again. If that's the case why really switch even. That 4th man with his hand off the ground is supposed to be a wildcard, not just a pass rusher. Trade: older, large contract -- played well last year, and many of the 10 before tho. Might gain worth for a final 8 team. Someone like the saints who will likely be replacing a DE, and can't chase a free agent might be inclined to trade for one. I see him likely gone, even though I'm a big fan. It's much easier for a 20 yr old to make that switch then a 30 something. Hopefully we can get good value for him. Player for player and get an RFA in here with experience in the system, or a first day pick?
Estelle Getty Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Anyone who thinks a 33 year old is gonna move to olb is crazy. Especially Schobel with his personality. He was great while we had him. He was an unfortunate lifer of th 2000's.

lets_go_bills Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Schobel is a good pass rusher and if all we do is ask to to just rush and chase runners out into the falts, he'll be fine. If he decides to keep playing the transition shouldn't be too difficult. He'll have OTAs and Training Camp to get comfortable. I think he can do it. He's still a pass rusher, we're just asking him to do it from a two-point stance as opposed to a three-point stance.
Munch Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Schobel has said himself he wouldnt mind going to OLB in a 3-4... http://www.fantasysp.com/player/nfl/Aaron_Schobel/777029 I think he could do it, and i think he wants to do it. The switch might actually keep him with the team
Sisyphean Bills Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I like it. I think they'll be successful with Schobel and Maybin dropping into coverage and the pass rush coming from Stroud and Williams. Solves the lack of pass rush problems and improves the coverage in the middle of the field all in one go.

He wants to finish his tailend career with a wnning team which is capable of making the playoffs. That is not going to happen with the rebuilding Bills. It is obvious with his retirement talk that he is very unenthused with being on a team which is going through another HC and organizational change. The right thing to do for him and the team is to make the best deal you can get in a trade and move on. I'm sure he would love to go to one of the Texas teams. If a reasonable deal can be made (third or fourth rd pick) then go ahead and do it.

I guess N.O. is close enough too. Seriously, I think he will retire and now may be a good time for him to go.

Seriously, I think he will retire and now may be a good time for him to go. I think (HOPE?) that Schobel would still fetch more than a 6th round draft pick. He is still a productive pass rusher. I'd hope that they could get a 3rd rounder for him, but hey, what do I know?
sllib olaffub Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I guess it depends on what the coaching staff has planned schematically, and if Schobel is capable of filling whatever OLB role full time (because he makes too much to be part time), and if he's willing. I'd think he'd be like Kampman in G.B. Now, it'd be fair to him to trade him to a winner for a third rounder, and to then pick up a younger, more suitable player at a lower price, and if the Bills did that I would respect it.
bkc Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 third would be ok , maybe to perry's new team. second thought what about manningham and a 3 for him
Wing Man Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 After QB and OT, I expect the Bills will concentrate on filling positions for their new 3-4, especially at LB and DE.

Remember the crazy zone schemes Jerry gray incorporated while he was defensive coordinator here, Schobel dropped back into coverage way more then he should have.

Player for player and get an RFA in here with experience in the system, or a first day pick? I think they keep him as a pass rushing specialist - meaning he only plays on obvious passing downs and will most likely rush the passer on 95% of those plays. They will probably move him around a bit (from side to side) and also play a few four man fronts so he can rush with his hand down. They will not ask him to defend the run in obvious running situations and will probably only ask him to cover a flat in a zone blitz type situation. I do think he will be able to cover the short area, since he did a lot of that under Williams when we played a zone blitz almost exclusively. I think the move to a 3-4 is to help disguise things better, but the overall philosophy of the defense (i.e. 1 gap) will stay the same. They will probably try to incorporate more 2 gap principles as they get the players to do so. I could see the defense trying to create matchups while rushing, so I expect all pass rushers to be moved around a bit.
Nevergiveup Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 I know Schoebel has been productive, but if you can move him to another team during this transition you do it. A position switch would be difficult for him. Not a hard worker, does not show up for anything mandatory and his attitude is poor at best. Definitely not the type of player you want with a new coach and alot of young players likely to come in. Move him for whatever you can. In the long run it will best for the team.

He was an unfortunate lifer of th 2000's. Why wouldn't he. Always been a team first stand up guy and he would face less contact from that position making it easier on his body.
Sisyphean Bills Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Why wouldn't he. Always been a team first stand up guy and he would face less contact from that position making it easier on his body. Indeed. Who'd think twice when asked to perform the next "Langston Walker special"?
CardinalScotts Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 He'll make the switch and continue being a great player
