IDBillzFan Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Wow- tough crowd my wife and i saw Spamalot & Wicked and loved them both took the kids to the Lion King and they liked it so much we drove 2 hours to Milwaukee to see it again a year later. we'll see it a 3rd time in Madison in the spring. We both agree that 'Phantom' and 'Cats' are for theatre snobs- don't go if you can avoid it saw 'Rent' several years ago and never really figured out what was going on- i think it was about an AIDS victim I'm with you. I thought Wicked was awesome. I grew up on the Wizard of Oz, and to this day it remains one of my favorite movies. As a result, Wicked was an awesome take on something I thought I knew inside and out. Some of the music was a little much for me, but it did not take away from the overall effect of the plot. That said, I spent the better part of my previous life on stage, and think live theater is outstanding, and yet RENT was the first time I ever got to intermission of a show and thought to myself "WTF is this thing about?" I saw it in NYC, so it didn't help that every time a character entered the stage for the first time, a bunch of whacked out groupies in the audience would start yelling like they were at a midnight showing of "Rocky Horror."
plenzmd1 Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 My wife and I saw Phantom in SF and Toronto. We enjoyed both shows. Last year we saw A Tale of Two Cities on Broadway it was not good. IMO Broadway is way to commercial and caters to tourists. Your kidding right? This is like saying you like Arena ball way more than the NFL cause the players aren't as good and therfore try harder than the NFL players, and the NFL only caters to the the casual football fan. We tryto get to NYC at least once a year, and always , and I mean always, catch at first run,on Broadway show while there, and sometimes even an off broadway show. Last spring, saw Gods of Carnage with James Gangolfini and Jeff Daniels and it was AWESOME. If they do tour, go see it, I guarantee you will enjoy it. We are also season tickets holders to both the bigest local theatre group here in Richmond as well as the Broadway in Richmond series, of which Wicked is part of the package this year. Both my wife and kids love Wicked. Someone else mentioned Lion King, and that is just spectacular. But I also just saw the local production of August,Osage County and loved it as well.
