jangalang
Rolando McClain has been coaching/playing a 3-4 for the past three years. Draft him!!
BillsFan-4-Ever
A report I read said he can coach the 4-3 or the 3-4. What I want to avoid is this being continued The Bills have been a 4-3 team the past nine seasons, and Gailey has a history of using it. But he mentioned at his introductory news conference that he would consider switching to a 3-4 because it can give offenses fits.
jangalang
It's a little sly to take the Bills job the day after National Signing Day for college football, too. That's obviously why we had to wait to find out this news.
JPS
YAWN....predicitably obscure pick for DC. Denney (if he's back) and Kelsay might be okay 3-4 DEs. Can they hold their point and let Poz, McClain and other LBs make plays?? Maybe. We would need less of a pass rush from them, so they got that covered. BillsZubaz
I am not so sure. That 2003 Redskins D that Edwards coordinated did not fare so well. 24th overall, allowed 4.4 yds per rush. http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/2003/opp.htm Fine. But according to your link they were 11th overall in scoring against. IMO the most important statistic.

Steely Dan
Hence the wait for knowing who it was.... the announcement came just after Nat'l signing day for colleges That would explain that then. put ellison on another team Ellison is a great depth guy, but not a starter. Hopefully if a switch to the 3-4 is in the cards the Bills have a solid plan for free agency. Don't do it just cause it's the cool thing to do. I hate that. What he said. People think the 3-4 is gonna cure all ills. It won't. Especially without the personnel to run it. JMO

I wanted the switch because the 3-4 has always been my personal preference for a defensive scheme. I just like it as a scheme. But like any other defense we will have to acquire the personel to effectively run it. Now I do think we have some pieces already here.
Bufcomments
OK I like this hire just because the Tampa 2 is history. Second I like the 3-4 because this gets Maybin on the field in a stand up position. I think Williams is strong enough to play nose. He looks like bigger version of Jeff Wright. Maybe Stroud can spell him on passing downs. Kelsey can play end in a 3-4 I believe. If Schobel comes back he can play the other end. If not Ellis better step up big time or they will have to find a replacement. But the key is the LB's. If they make the switch I would love to see them draft McClain and have him and Mitchell in the middle and Maybin and Poz on the outside. But who they draft depends on who they get during the free agent period. If they can get LB this way they can still draft a OB or LT (my choice) in the first round. This is going to be interesting. Fan in Chicago
We need a lot of new personnel if we are to make a successful switch to the 3-4. If we acquire all these required personnel via FA , trades or draft, that leaves precious little resources for OL and QB. Where do we get them ? A good off-season will net 3-4 solid players who can start and contribute this season. These players should be split between the O and D. I think we should plug the holes we have in the D (LB primarily) and shore up our offense. That will make sure we have two half way competent squads to field. Going to the 3-4 will almost ensure we will suck on O once more or make a half hearted effort at the 3-4 leaving both squads slightly incompetent
PDaDdy
Finally!!!! We know who our coordinator will be, and we know what scheme we're running (3-4). So, we also know that our present personnel taken into account, we'll need maybe two new DE's, at least one NT, and probably two linebackers, at a minimum. That's five new players on defense! Seymour will be availabe... then we've got all the guys on the steelers and chargers teams that our F.O. will know about, not to mention miami... , I'd think we'll have to be active in F.A. to even field a semblence of a competent defense. Denver did it quickly and was good, and I think our secondary is better. So, who will we be targeting in F.A.? !!!!! 3-4 / 4-3 HYBRID HERE WE COME !!!!! I don't think we need that much of an overhaul. To me the switch to a 3 - 4 means this should/could be our starting LB and DL line up: DLINE Marcus Stroud at DE Terrance Cody at NT (Rookie) Kyle Williams at DE LB Aaron Schobel at OLB (Pass rush specialist) POZ at MLB Mitchell at MLB Aaron Maybin at OLB (Pass rush specialist) This may not be the personnel lineup some envision but it would mean we only need one additional body to play NT. This Would give us a ridiculous amount of run stuffing beef up front. Maybin and Schobel would play in more space and would be free to go completely nuts attacking the QB from the left, the right or both sides. Secondary stays the same maybe trading Whitner in for any kind of draft pick or depth player and letting George Wilson start with Byrd. McGee and McKelvin at CBs

What's-his-nose goes from RBs coach on a bad running team to OC (not really fair, since it's sort of a token title, per Gailey's intro press conference). But since Gailey will have virtually no hand in the D, his DC is very important. Dude has 1 year of DC experience, and goes from Miami's inside linebackers coach to our DC. Anyone else notice that the Bills seem to be all about massive promotions when hiring coaches? I don't think that's a good sign.

rpcolosi
Someone had suggested this earlier....that it would be the new Florida DC. I'll take credit for that one from early on.... but I was wrong on Jim Jeffcoat being DL coach...
Fan in San Diego
Seems wasteful to switch defensive fronts and create more holes for a team that has many already. I don't think we had the personnel to run the 4-3. So switching is actually easier. We didn't have any decent DE's IMHO. The 3-4 should actually be easier to staff this year than the 4-3. cfbillsfan
NO, ****. 34 is the new fad just like the tampa 2 was. Well, if this is the case, we were 3-4 when 3-4 wasn't cool. Borrowing from Barbara Mandell.......Please sing along! I don't think we are doing this just to be fashionable. We are doing this cause the Tampa 2 was not getting it done. There were some moments of success, but over all I would call it a FAILBOAT. GO BILLS!
