bourbonboy Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 FYI - I didn't see it referenced here, but very interesting observation on the Super Bowl OL's in Bob Matthews D&C column on Monday: The Buffalo Bills should be this lucky — or smart. Here's how the starting offensive lines for the two teams in Super Bowl XLIV were built: New Orleans LT Jermon Bushrod: 125th overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft out of Towson University. LG Carl Nicks: 164th pick in the 2008 NFL draft out of Nebraska. C Jonathan Goodwin: Signed as a free agent March 2006 ... was the 154th overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft by the New York Jets out of Michigan. RG Jahri Evans: 108th overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft out of Division III Bloomsburg. RT Jon Stinchcomb: 37th overall pick in the 2003 NFL draft out of Georgia. Indianapolis Colts LT Charlie Johnson: 199th overall pick in the 2006 NFL draft out of Oklahoma State. LG Ryan Lilja: Acquired off waivers from Kansas City Chiefs in September 2004 ... originally signed by Kansas City as an undrafted free agent. C Jeff Saturday: Signed as free agent in January 1999 ... originally signed by the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in April 1998. RG Kyle DeVan: Signed as free agent in April 2009 ... originally signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent in May 2008 ... later waived by the New York Jets ... played in af2 with the Boise Burn in spring 2009. RT Ryan Diem: 118th overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft out of Northern Illinois. link: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/apps/p...AID=20102010307 Indy has THREE starting linemen that were undrafted free agents, and there's not a first round draft pick starting for either side, yet we gotta keep burning up draft picks cause our personnel/drafting has been so bad. Very depressing.
lets_go_bills Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 We had an undrafted pro bowl LT and we traded him away. But let's not re-hash that.
CountDorkula Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I am actually dumbfounded by these stats. No first round picks by either team! It really makes me angry that the Bills just cant seem to get it right no matter who is making the picks

Polian has a knack for finding good players in all rounds, including undrafted rookies and low priced free agents. Hope Buddy can do the same.
thewildrabbit Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 You guys gotta understand that every time the Bills start to make moves in the direction they end up shooting themselves in the foot. An example would be the hiring of an experienced O line coach in Jim McNally, the guy who mentored Anthony Munoz in Cincy and developed Jason Peters in Buffalo. This was a great step forward, but the Bills should have drafted and built that O line when he first arrived in Buffalo so he could have developed more young players, instead of bringing in overweight high priced free agents. McNally retires and the Bills promote from within, the line goes south and naturally everyone blames the players and not the inexperienced O line coach. The combination of a bad strength and conditioning coach and rookie line coach turned what could have become a decent line into one of the worst ever.

It really makes me angry that the Bills just cant seem to get it right no matter who is making the picks It's coaching. Mouse Mcnally sucked. Local guy comes home , great. He lived off Munoz who likely would have been great without Mouse. Hell the Giants changed their blocking scheme efter Mouse was removed from there, and they put two guys in the Pro Bowl the next year. Coaching I tell you.
DarthICE Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 I posted a link showing the round the LT's of all the playoff teams were picked. TWO of them were first rounders and that was it. We do NOT need to take a LT in the first round.

Very depressing. Really does go to show you that the line is a unit, not just one or two players, but a whole unit working together. Plus, it couldn't possibly hurt that both teams have world-class QBs operating behind those lines. QBs that know when to get rid of the ball, how to read a defense, how to make offensive adjustments, etc. We had an undrafted pro bowl LT and we traded him away. But let's not re-hash that. Yes we did...my kingdom for another just like him. Please recalled that he Bills under Tom Donohoe and Marv/Brandon tried the same model you reference above. It didn't work. Polian has a knack for finding good players in all rounds, including undrafted rookies and low priced free agents. Hope Buddy can do the same. True, but they also didn't have a QB. Closest they came was Bledsoe, and that team went 9-7. It's coaching. To be fair, he did help Jason Peters develop into a great LT, and look at the stats in McNally's last season compared to the 2 after he retired. Season-----Rushing YPG------Sacks Allowed 2007*----------112.5----------------26 2008-----------115.1----------------38 2009-----------116.7----------------46 *McNally's final season in Buffalo I think he was a better coach than you're giving him credit for; they certainly haven't been better without him (unless you consider 4 rushing yards/game better).
JStranger76 Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 The Saints would have #13 overall pick Jamal Brown starting at LT if he wasn't injured, and the Colts 2nd round pick Tony Ugoh if he would get his head on straight. Both teams have the rare QB that can mask a not so great offensive line as well. They have both used pretty high picks at LT, even though both QB are so good at reading a defense it almost doesn't matter. Still, it's not like either team was trying to get lucky with a lower round pick at a very important position. Not trying to say we do or don't have to pick a LT at #9, just saying that pretty much every team knows the importance of the LT position.
