Rex Ryan middle finger incident

lol...tabloid fodder

I agree, the response is not proportional to the offense. How much did Brian Cox get fined for giving fans the bird in Buffalo 15 or 20 years ago? Bud Adams gave Buffalo fans the finger just last year and was fined 25k, and that was the OWNER, during/after an NFL game.

I'm listening to the fan in NYC and they're talking about the fine being as much as 250k. I don't get it.

As for race, I'd like Marshawn MORE, not less if he did the same thing in Miami, but he didn't. Running over drunk Canadian chicks while you're drunk on the bottle YOU brought out with you and smokin' weed with a gun in a car with your buddies are a little more serious.

How much did any ofa> get fined?

The disclaimer is the key to my thinking. Fast-forward to the run-up to the next Jets-Dolphins game. No doubt it will be a featured item, at least in My-ami. Not for nothing that The Herald columnist's name literally translates to "The Bastard." I normally try to be courteous to those in the profession and follow my mother's advice for when there's nothing nice to say, but this guy is a complete *.

Fans tend to take things personally when birds and insults are thrown their way.... Whereas for players & coaches in the league, this drop of water has already rolled off their backs. As I wrote, it's pretty lame at this point. Nowhere near the Bills-Dolphins '90s rivalry at this stage. But it's got potential, especially if the first game b/w the teams next year is @ the Phins' stadium, and their fans take it to the next level.

Considering that Ryan already had it goin' on with the Fins vis-a-vis the smack war with Channing Crowder, not really sure how much more fuel that fire needed.

Between this and the "I'm not kissing Bill Belichick's Super Bowl ring" stuff, it's entertaining having him in the division, no? Now if the Bills could just improve enough to be relevant, maybe we could get in on the fun ...

Controversy? What controversy? I just took a spin through the NFL sites -- ESPN, SI, NFL.com, AOL Fanhouse, to name a few -- and had a difficult time even finding the original AP report. Hell, even Vac chose not to columnize it. (Put it in Monday's Whacks on his blog, said it wasn't the brightest thing Ryan's ever done, but it certainly proves that the guy's not a phony. That was it.) So the Post had some fun with the back cover. That's their shtick.

Controversy? AP and the Jets beat guys will report on any fines/discipline because it's part of the job, but everyone else has already moved on. (Disclaimer: I haven't checked the Dolphins' message boards, which are probably plotting their revenge, but I don't really care what they think anyway ...)

This story was reported everywhere yesterday, including those sites that you listed, ESPN radio and the ESPN morning shows. The only reason it's hard to find now is because it's the week of the Superbowl. Not only that, it's media day at the Superbowl. He would have had to shoot somebody in the fight club for it to go into today. BTW, I never said it was a controversy, I said it was an embarrassing incident that Goodell and the Jets' boss are none too pleased about dealing with this week. Rex Ryan has officially been put on notice and depending on the severity, his next incident of baffoonery could be his last.

It was initially reported because it was newsworthy: a representative of the league not exactly using the best judgment. And with a PICTURE!! Most sportstalkers don't work Sundays, so they addressed it yesterday. Ditto for the few columnists who bothered to write anything. But to think that it would still be a topic, if not for Media Day? I strongly disagree. In fact, a quick check of the two sportswriting boards in my bookmarks shows a collective disinterest: one discussion morphed into a Henne-vs-Sanchez debate, and a Bryan Cox wisecrack (from me) was the only reply in the thread at my current hangout. Combined outrage: zero.

What? If this happened during the season it would most certainly still be a topic today. NYC has moved onto baseball and ESPN and NFL network could care less about Rex Ryan since his team lost last week. Beat reporters and ESPN would be beating this thing to death if this was the middle of the season. Is it a big deal? No. But I do think that Ryan clearly has self control issues. Like dogs that chase cars, I don't think Rex Ryan is long for this job.

He probably wouldn't have been at an MMA event on the Saturday night before a game if it was during the season, now would he?

I think we get it. Rex Ryan is a loose cannon. Move on.

Take the blinders off. Any American should be able to flip the bird at an MMA event during their free time. This wasn't a press conference, an organized NFL event, team activity, or anything related. That wasn't a press photographer either. It was probably some idiot who was heckling him publicly. If ANYTHING, Ryan should be able to sue the moron that sent the picture to the press.

He can do whatever he wants. So can his employer. What are you, some kind of socialist?

I don't think Rex is that stupid, so the answer is no. All bets are off though if you cut him off on the Jersey Turnpike or the buffett line.

Jets fine Rexxy $50,000. I think the NFL will fine him the same amount of $.

Doubtful. Think they'll consider the Jets' action, along with the quick apology, sufficient.

The Jet head coach has become an official embarrassment to the Jets, their fans and the NFL. How do you enforce discipline when you're a loose cannon yourself? By far the most "entertaining" head coach in the league, but probably not going to last very long though if this is how he fills his spare time.

:w00t:

Why is this such a big deal? So what Rex was having fun with some fans? If this offends someone, they really need to get a grip with reality. There was no need for him to apologize for what he did. He was not on the job so the NFL should keep their nose out of it and Rex Off!

I rather see a coach like this rather than the corpse we were watching the last four years.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was heckled, cursed and ultimately spit at not once, not twice, but three times by a drunken Miami Dolphins fans before he made an obscene gesture toward him at a mixed martial arts event on Saturday in Sunrise, Fla., according to Fox Sports reporter Jay Glazer.

Glazer, who accompanied Ryan and several NFL coaches and players to the event, said Thursday on WFAN radio that Ryan showed ‘‘great restraint’’ and security did a poor job in keeping the fan away from Ryan. Apparently at his wit’s end, Ryan extended his middle finger to the fan as he departed the event.

‘‘I’ve never seen a fan go so far over the line,’’ said Glazer. ‘‘He said to Rex, ‘I hope you die. You fat piece of crap.’ He spit at him.’’

I heard a rumor about this version of events from one of the other NYC guys after my previous posts in this thread. If it's true, I'm amazed that he didn't go into the stands after the guy.
