Named so because it was one of the first green, "Grassy Valleys" settlers saw after they cleared the Sierra Nevada Mts through Donner Pass. No shortage of the other type of grass there, too. Nevada City sits side by side with Grass Valley. They were boom towns in the gold rush, lots of neat things to see and do there. Two very new age, progressive, touristy, artsy type of towns (NC more so than GV) in the middle of fairly conservative surroundings (agricultural/ranching).
