SawchukBills Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Is any player "proven" if a team is willing to trade them away? You're gambling on they have anything left. PTR A gamble that isn't worth a #9 pick...
tonyjustbcuz Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 If the proven player is a left offensive tackle sure....if not pick the best OT available from the draft. This organization is so shrewd with their player personnel moves that they are thinking about offering the Philadelphia Eagles their 9th pick in the draft for a solid Pro Bowl left OT named Jason Peters who is a proven player now! Doesn't sound so good does it??? Then I wouldn't make the same offer to another team for a proven left offensive tackle when the average NFL career lasts between 4-5 years. We'll end up with a player for 2 years and then Ralph Wilson will not want to pay him enough to keep him so we'll lose that player to free agency ie: Nate Clements, Antwoine Winfield, Pat Williams, Jabari Greer, Reuban Brown, and many others!! Build through the draft!! That's what the good teams like Indy and Pittsburgh do !!
Cash Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 let's talk cap hit.... the #9 pick will probably get a 5yr / $ 35 mil deal (ave $7 mil / yr) Donavan McNabb is heading into the second year of a 2yr / $24.5 mil deal (ave $12mil/yr) he will demand an extension......or be very unhappy....or he could play out his one year deal and hit free agency....leaving us with nothing. i'm not against trading my #1 pick..........but not for McNabb. I love McNabb, but he's a little long in the tooth and in need of a contract to justify #9 overall. I was all for trading #11 for him last year (not that Philly would've done that deal), but that was last year.
Thurman#1 Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Would You Trade The #9 Pick For A Proven Player?, Better to go with a "sure thing" than a "here's hoping Depends on who the proven player is. I mean, that's the bottom line. Peyton Manning, yes. Mike Williams, no. But the money argument doesn't work. Any player who is good enough to trade for a #9 pick is already making more money than we would pay for a #9 or will reach the end of their contract and get a huge raise in a year or so.
Trader Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 While we're all caught up in figuring out what the Bills need, who'll be available at #9 and arguing over who they should draft, it's good to remember that at best, the draft is a crap shoot. No matter how good a job the scouts do, it seems a fairly high percentage of draft picks (20%? 40%? 60%?) never live up to the lofty expectations that come with their draft-day position even when they make the squad. And while that's true of every team, it seems particularly true of the Bills and their first round picks in the last ten years, so many of whom have been outright busts. In addition, the higher the position of the pick, the costlier the contract. And it's human nature for the people who picked that player to stick with them year after year (Losman, Williams). Plus that player is taking up a roster slot which might have gone to a player who could have helped your team. On the other hand, you already know the track record of players currently in the league. Unlike draftees, who your never really certain about until they get some real life NFL experience, you know what guys currently in the league can and cannot do. So, considering the needs the Bills have -- and if Schobel retires, there's another major hole to be filled (unless you're content with Aaron Maybin) -- and the pressure to have at least an exciting and competitive team right away, I don't think it would be a bad idea at all to trade that #9 pick (and maybe some others) for one or more proven players who can immediately contribute. Comments? Ok I will bite, who do you have in mind for the number 9 pick?
Gotta Dream Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 Lets trade all our picks to the dolfags for Ricky Williams. That was great!
rstencel Posted January 27, 2010 Posted January 27, 2010 A player worth #9 pick for trade is probably going to have or want a huge contract. Think building through the draft, hopefully with someone worth #9 pick, would be the best choice financially most likely, and gives best chance to build a team for long haul. Only way wouldn't mind trading that pick for a player is if get a pick back lower in first, and the player we get is signed for at least 3 years. Wouldn't mind seeing them trade for someone like Troy Smith, but don't think that would take more than a 3rd, and possibly a swap of 5th rounders. Wouldn't be upset with McNabb, but think he would cost too much, and not sure how much longer he is going to play. Doubt Eagles would trade him anyway.
