Dan Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Since Chan will be running the offense and calling his own game, as others have stated, Modkins will be his right-hand man in teaching the offense and game planning. He knows how Chan runs his offense, having worked for him for most of his coaching career, so he will be a trusted partner who can hit the ground running (as far as teaching the system to the players). If Chan tried to bring in a bigger name OC, then first he would have to teach his system to the new coordinator, hope he can teach it well to the players, and then hope the OC's ego doesn't get in the way to where he wants to start implementing some of his own stuff and possibly undermining Chan's offense. And I like that these guys aren't just specialists, but are overall football coaches. Chan is not only a good offensive guy, but he's also coached defense and special teams at points in his career and Modkins has not only coached RBs, but also TEs and DBs in his career. And reading the bios of Modkins that others have posted, it really look like he knows how to coach up RBs. Just think if Fred and Marshawn can both get even better, how scary will our running game be (provided the team can develop/fix the OL). The really important coaching hire will be the DC. Chan's going to have to rely on him to be a lot more independent when taking care of that side of the ball. OK... let me see if I got this right. First, we're told the HC decision will be critical. So we wait... and get a completely mediocre, tired Gailey. No problem - as long as he hires good coordinators all will be good. So we wait... and get a Curtis Modkins as the first hire. A guy that is so unheard of that we don't even know enough about him to say anything bad, let alone make up something good. No problem. So now, it's the DC that's the really important hire. I guess the first two guys were really just decoration. So again, we wait. Let me ask though, when they fail in the DC hire, will the ST Coach then become the one that matters most? I'm sorry, but Nix or whomever is putting together one of the most uninspired coaching staffs I think I've ever heard of. Serious question - how many times has there been a highly effective HC that simultaneously had the responsibilities of the OC or DC?
PNW_Bills_Fan Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 http://www.wivb.com/dpp/sports/bills_and_n...rdinals-Modkins I guess it is true. This hire is a good because ego isnt going to get in the way of Chan running his offense.
Endzone Animal Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Anyone have information on how to join the Curtis Modkins fan club? The buzz surrounding this hire is just short of the excitement of hiring Chan Gailey as head coach, or Buddy Nix as GM. What excitement! Things are really looking Super Bowl for Buffalo now, and the whole country is jumping on the bandwagon.
zazie Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Watch out Southern Illinois State! The Buffalo Bills may be raiding your defensive staff soon. I hear their DB coach is an exceptional talent and really deserves the boost to become a DC in the NFL...
jr1 Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Curtis is a figurehead so I'm not worried about this
Doc Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I'll grant that the Cardinals' offensive line doesn't exactly consist of world beaters. But . . . If you were going up against Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, etc., and if you knew that the Cardinals ranked last in the number of runs attempted, how often would you put eight men in the box? Yeah, same here. The Cardinals' passing game took a ton of pressure off the running game. Wouldn't the same have been true in 2008, when the Cards ranked 2nd to last in YPC (3.5)? Or 2007 when they were 3rd worst in YPC (3.6)? OK... let me see if I got this right. First, we're told the HC decision will be critical. So we wait... and get a completely mediocre, tired Gailey. Seriously, I just have to trust that they know something we don't. I like Nix. I like Gailey (or at least the hire has grown on me), so I'm going to choose to give him the benefit of the doubt for now and trust that he knows what he's doing. Only time will determine if this all works out and nothing else. I do hope a much more experienced DC is brought in, though.

This is why Ralph can get away with being more concerned about the bottom line than the W/L column. Fans will accept and defend Ralph Wilson every step of the way as he presents us with "scratch and dent" front office personnel, coaching staff, and players. He knows that he can serve up a **** sandwich every single time and Bills fans will say "thank you Ralph, may I have another, just please don't leave." I swear most of this fan base has battered wife syndrome.
Mopreme Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Gailey is a joke so hiring the rb coach from the team that had the 28th ranked running game in the nfl makes a lot of sense. I'm sure the DC will be some position coach who Gailey worked with in the past. Unfortunately, it's going to continue to be the blind leading the blind. Wilson had a great chance to turn this around but it went downhill with hiring Nix.

Why is everyone so excited about CG running the offense? Was he on anybody's list as OC if somebody else was HC? Anybody here thinking about CG this past month?

Serious question - how many times has there been a highly effective HC that simultaneously had the responsibilities of the OC or DC? Ok, I did say in my post "the really important hiring", but I only meant that the DC hire would need to be more experienced/proven successful than the OC hiring because in essence, Chan is the OC and Modkins is his 2nd lieutenant...whereas the DC will be for the most part running the show on that side of the ball so Chan isn't spreading himself too thin. I didn't mean it is more important than the hiring of the head coach and yes, Chan wasn't the sexy pick we all wanted, but he seems like a good choice to me now that the dust has settled. He's as hungry as we fans are (to prove himself/chip on the shoulder). And I'm glad they got a coach who wants to be in Buffalo and isn't afraid of the challenge. I'm glad we got a guy who is going to concentrate on fixing the offense. And for what will be asked of him (Modkins), it is more important that he is someone who knows how Chan wants things run and can teach that well, rather than to be bringing an entirely different system with him or a lot of OC experience (he won't be calling the games). That is why I think we didn't need a super genius experienced O coordinator and I'm not upset by the hire of Modkins, but I do think they need to hire an experienced, good DC. And I would be upset if they don't pick an experienced guy for that position. Just because someone has a big name we all recognize and past success, doesn't guarantee that they are the right person for the job or will automatically make everything better (see Terrell Owens). And in reverse, just because we don't recognize their name doesn't mean they aren't good at what they do or will be asked to do. Can anyone say 100% that Cowher, or Billick, or Marty would have succeeded in Buffalo and that Chan will not? I like the amount of experience that Buddy and Chan bring to the table after the last 10 years of bad or inexperienced FO men and offensive futility. So Buddy has never been a GM, but he has a hell of alot more experience for the job than Marv or Brandon. So Chan isn't Cowher...but Cowher thinks he's a damn good coach. Jauron and Guy are gone! Brandon won't be calling the shots when it comes to personnel. Right now, the glass is half-full (not half-empty) for me and I'm just hoping optimistically that the glass isn't filled only with Kool-aid this time.
lets_go_bills Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 I'm a football guy and I follow it 24/7, 365. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable when it comes to the NFL, but when we announced this hiring, the first words out of my mouth were, "Who the f**k is Curtis Modkins?"
OrangeJuiceSimpson Posted January 24, 2010 Posted January 24, 2010 Well Gailey BETTER run the offense because I never heard of this guy. Question...will he be in charge of Gatorade or Water? Too much pressure on the guy. He'll probably just serve a mixture of both.
