I think they have good depth if you consider Levitre and Wood as starters. A better guy is always welcome though. I think we need to get much stronger here. I would like to transition Woods to Center. He would solve our problems there. I'm not a big fan of Hangartner. Too many teams get the big push up the middle on him. Levitre is ok. He proved to be a good utility man but was dominated many times. I cut him slack because he is a rookie but we need to get bigger and stronger here.

Steely Dan Posted January 22, 2010 Author Posted January 22, 2010 McNeill is easily the LT they should be looking at. Keep Gandy. Clifton is rumored to be considering retirement. Gaither could work too at RT. He's not an UFA. I like Sproles he can make things happen. I like Chester Taylor more. He some what similar to Freddie Jackson, an all around player. Sproles in not an UFA I think we need to get much stronger here. I agree that they should put Wood at C. Especially because a whole new offensive system is being installed it's a good time to do it, IMO. If they did that I think they'd swing Hangartner out to guard. With all of guys on the roster now, due to injuries last year, I think there is more than enough depth behind them. Some may even surprise in camp and push for a starting job.
Búfalo Blanco Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Dan, Great work man... Some excellent FA potential out there... Obviously, we could use people at several positions, but there are some really great options at obvious need positions for the Bills... OT, DE, DT and OLB I'd be ecstatic if they pulled off signing a guy like Wilfork or Peppers... That may be a pipe dream, but adding just one or two of these type of players (assuming they stay healthy) could make a big difference...

Leonidas Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 A couple of points: 1) For positions we don't need to address (CB, S, punter, kicker, long snapper, etc.), you probably didn't need to list them. But c'est la vie; I agree that those positions are solid. 2) Chris Redman is terrible. Two good games this year in a system he's been studying for three years does not make up for years of ineptitude. He was out of football for three years for a reason. 3) Chad Pennington should probably hang it up. His arm has got to be made of jello at this point. If you bring it in and he can sling it 60 yards in the air, then fine. But I doubt it. 4) Wilfork isn't going anyway. People are crazy if they don't think New England is going to franchise him, especially with an uncapped year and Kraft's got money to spend. 5) Speaking of the uncapped year, don't all the rules change with regards to UFA's/RFA's? Do these lists take them into account? 6) Peppers isn't coming to Buffalo. Not that he's going back to Carolina, but he's going to command major bucks somewhere. But it won't be in Buffalo. 7) Chad Clifton is like 100. I can't believe they were even able to piece his pelvis back together after Sapp broke it in half. His retirement is way past due. 8) I see Campbell sticking around Washington. He finished off the season reasonably well and they don't have a replacement for him. Of course I'm sure Snyder/Allen would give Shanahan the green light to pull off a blockbuster trade with Chicago to get Cutler back, but I'm not sure if that's going to happen. Campell being a free agent, that trade would likely be just for draft picks leaving Campbell available. Barring that, I expect him to return to Washington.
Chandler#81 Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Thanks Steely. This thread should be pinned for easy access, IMO. There certainly are intriquing prospects. Kinda like a kid with his nose pressed against the candy counter. I want to believe that we're 'gonna make a splash in FA', we definately have needs that could be greatly addressed here, but we were told we're going after a big name coach to restore the pride too..
BillsGuyInMalta Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Great post, makes it real easy to search. And yes Leonidas, this list does reflect the CBA rules for FAs which is why you see so many RFAs on it. In terms of UFAs, we have to remember that Nix said that he wants to build through the draft so do not expect big name free agent signings. I'm also going to initially assume we stick with the 4-3. So with that in mind, my realistic outlook on FA is: Kevin Walter, WR from the Texans (6'3 but really shifty, would complement Evans very well) Levi Jones, OT from the Redskins (We should have done this last year, he really started to come in during the last 8 games of the season) Artis Hicks, OT from Vikings (Not really well known, but he's been in the league awhile and has some starts under his belt at both OT and OG. Good depth and insurance in case Wood can't make it back) Dwan Edwards, DE from Baltimore (Finally got a chance to start and proved what a good run stuffer he is...not much of a pass rusher though so hopefully Schobel stays on for one more year) Tully Banta-Cain, OLB from Patriots (Even if we do stick with a 4-3, I feel like he's got the speed to play OLB and is still an upgrade over Ellison). Obviously that list changes dramatically if we go to a 3-4 (which there seems to be a lot more UFA options for). We'll know in a week I suppose! Plus, I truly believe the Bills will trade for a QB during the offseason.

If I didn't include those positions some moron would have asked why and then say those positions do need upgrading. The Pennington idea is that if he has another year in his beat up body he could serve as a QB coach as well as providing a starter. JMO Washington has the fourth pick in the draft. If they are intent on getting a QB there, they may let him walk. JMO Great post, makes it real easy to search. After the very underwhelming response to signing Gailey they may realize they need a splashy signing in order to save season ticket sales. Everything I've read recently says that Woods is expected to be fine for TC. The Bills need a run stuffer more than anything else on the DL in my opinion. Stopping the run gives the DE's a much better shot at making plays.
