ThreeBillsDrive Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 He's more like 225 to 235 and that was confirmed by someone near the end of the season. WAYYYYYY too lean for a DE. Yeah, so he bulked up for the combine because he was consuming (1) 40-60 grams of protein 6-7 times per day and (2) he trained hard. But how aggressive was he post-combine in adhering to the discipline of that much protein intake over the day. If you don't keep it up, you lose mass, which he likely did post-combine And building mass during the season is difficult because drills, practices, film room study takes away from all out dedication to fitness that is possible during the offseason.
Easy Money Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 Here are some physical stats from NFL.com: Maybin- 6-4, 250 Schobel- 6-4, 243 (if Maybin is small, what is Schobel?) Kelsay- 6-4, 261 C.Ellis- 6-4, 261 Maybin put on a lot of muscle between the end of his last college season and the Combine. He likely can add some more. Yes, the Bills DEs are on the small side weight-wise compared to the average NFL DE but that's what fit their scheme. That is why it seemed like every team ran for over 200 yds against the Bills every game. Also their scheme is no good!!!! Has never been !!!!
truth on hold Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 well first the listed heights weights aren't worth very much. Maybin said that he played at 245, but then he kind of implied in the same interview that he played closer to 240 (he also said he wants to play around 255 next season). Schobel has said that he just doesn't bother lying about his weight like most DE's in the league do.the main thing is that Maybin looks and plays light. Schobel doesn't. It's probably, as Hardy Pile says, about leverage - body shapes vary and power is more about how the player is able to utilize their strength rather than just how many pounds they weigh on a scale. thats exactly right, most DEs are a lot smaller than people realize. they're built more like basketball players. you need to be quick to get around the edge. i met bruce smith when he played and even he was smaller in person than what people think. he even said i dont know why they keep lisitng me at 300 when im 265

Problem: Looks like Merriman plays like merry man. Not physical. Needs to play with power and violence. If he played physical football at the point of attack he could have overcome his lack of technique and have at least not been a complete embarrassment as a rookie. Instead, all he was able to do was jump on some piles and make a scant few plays when ball carriers were forced to reverse field and he was completely unblocked. Looked like he was on skates out there. Very disappointing to see such a lack of power and willingness to be physical from a first round DE. Seriously, if he had been a 24 year old UDFA from Montana State and played like that, they would have cut him in camp. Not sure he is tough enough and he certainly isn't going to be able to make a living running around people like Cornelius Bennett once did with his sub 4.5 speed. Maybin ran a 4.9 at the combine and he is probably no better than 4.7 with the wind at his back. He needs to be tough and do a lot of things right to live up to his hype and/or potential. He does have ridiculously long arms, so if he can man up and hone his pass rush technique he could be tough for OT's to block.
