BADOLBILZ Posted January 18, 2010 Posted January 18, 2010 There is a lot of handwringing here by people who can't understand why some people aren't enthused about the possibility of Leslie Frazier becoming HC. If you are hiring a coordinator to be your HC, you are way ahead of the game if that coordinator can come in and immediately turn his side of the ball into a dominant unit. Ryan is a creative defensive coach, who has taken a Jets defense that even the lowly Bills have traditionally enjoyed some of their best successes against (especially running the ball) and turned them into maybe the best D in the NFL. He didn't need one of the league's most talented front 7's to do so. Their blitz packages have mystified and overwhelmed a lot of good offenses, much as Ryan's defense had done in Baltimore. Recently succesful HC hires like Sean Payton, Norv Turner, even Wade Phillips have all brought their special stamp to one side of the ball. I don't see in any way how Frazier has distinguished himself to the level of Ryan or the aforementioned. Frazier plays a very vanilla 4-3, relying on sheer talent rather than creativity. How good could they be if they attacked more? As good as the Jets D? Frazier may turn out to be the great delegator, but as a coordinator it's hard to call him a great tactician. I am of the opinion that the Bills defense could play a lot better with more creative pressure packages.....but when I see Frazier's defense, I see a scheme that is not a lot different than the one that has failed to bring out the best in the Bills defenders the past 4 seasons. Who knows what kind of HC he would be, but I think we've seen that a vanilla 4-3 with this personnel does not work against teams with winning records.
