Hmm, strange, considering Schotty is #1 in running and 30-something in passing. Just thought he'd be a run first guy, but maybe he's trying to balance out his attack?

Then again, it's just a rumor at this point.

Not sure if I would want MM in Buffalo with his pass-first philosophy. We need a Steeler approach.

He meant Martz would end up in NY replacing Shottenheimer

One thing that "anti-pass happy" fans should know is that there is plenty of precedent for pass-happy coordinators being reined in by their head coach.

Kevin Gilbride was the Steelers coordinator for a few seasons under Cowher. Cowher made sure that they were a run first team. Gilbride also worked under Tom Coughlin with the Giants and was also kept on a short leash by Coughlin.

Mike Martz worked for half a season under Mike Singletary in San Francisco and toned down his pass-happy approach.

Guys like Martz and Gilbride are exceptionally knowledgeable in the NFL passing game and thus their value.

As long as they have head coaches who can control them and maintain oversight over play calling, it's an arrangement that can work.

If you're right that's the best news I've heard about our coaching search.

Its gonna be B. Schotty if we get any Schotty for a coach. Martz is rumored to fill BS's spot in NYJ unless I misunderstood

For those bitching about passing too much and needing to run the ball, Carolina had TWO 1100 yard rushers this year. And where are they right now?

This is the new NFL people, it all about the QB and all about being able to throw the damn ball.

I'm not saying MM is a fit here, but I don't buy you need to be like the Steelers/Ravens. During the Kelly years, playing in Buffalo during Dec and Jan, he was throwing for 300 yrds and TD's. Thomas and Davis in the back field were a big part of it. It was a matter of balance and good players. Yes there will be games like the one against the Colts, snowing and low visibility. But even still, RF threw a few nice balls that game. Just a phylisophical difference.

I actually agree with you. You need a QB who can air it out occasionally to keep a D honest. More importantly, you need a QB who does not turn to rock over on a regular basis.

Passing was the Steelers approach this season.

It's been their approach for a few seasons now. Like Marv used to say, once you get the reputation as an early riser, you can sleep in all you want.

People still think of the Steelers as a run first team even though they're not.

They're sitting at home because they insisted on passing when they had two 1100 yard rushers. If they'd run every down against the Bills, they would've won.
