Drafting isn't an exact science. If it was everyone could build a great team really fast.

Think about it, Tom Brady, one the best QB in football today (maybe history) got picked in the 6th round!

Years ago, we drafted Andre Reed, a future HOFer after we had already pick WR Chris Burkett

You are guessing what a player will be based on what he has shown against limited competition! Anyou cannot meassure a guys heart and desire and willingness to compete and get better.

Mike Williams had no desire to get better, he already had 25+ million in his pocket. See Oakland QB J. Russell

Shouldve. Could've, Would've

Lets keep dwelling on the past, instead of looking to a new decade

Not dwelling on the past just found it interesting is all!

Better yet...

why dont ya look at the coaching and front office/gm hirings we made...and those that we passed over?

that is the cause of said draft blunders.

You could do that with every single team.....big deal.

Also, Leodis Mckelvin is and will continue to be a very good CB.

All teams in the 1st round passed on J Byrd and we took him and he lead the league in Ints and was runner-up for defensive ROY.

I could go back in eveyone's life and told them what to do at that time...who to marry, what stocks to buy, etc...

I agree the draft has killed the Bills mostly from Butlers last draft on forward but especially missing on MW (most people said he was a lock for 10 years remember!) and then JP Losman. Although many said draft Ngata instead of Whitner and I completely agree Whitner has been a decent player just not what you want out of a number 8 ppick, but neither has M Huff who was taken before him. Neither has J Russell, or Alex Smith, or R Leaf, Or etc, etc, etc

The draft is a crapshoot every round every year just be happy it looks like this past draft for the Bills looks to be the best one in about a decade and probably no coincidence it was the first year Buddy Nix was back in the mix!

Can you imagine poor Dallas Clark on our teams his entire career. He'd just be another Derek Fine for us. The one pick that stands out is of course the Whitner over Ngata pick. Everyone I know wanted Ngata and it was a need at the time (still is). It's really inexplicable why we went with Whitner.

A more objective analysis would be to limit yourself to the 5 players after they picked in round that round. Its easy to cherry pick the best from each round. You have to think of who they needed at the time or a similar player (Whitner vs Ngata or Maybin vs Orakpo) to gauge how they did. Remember that Kelly was our 2ND first round pick when we picked him.

In the end it all comes down to the results on the field which is the most objective measure of how they did.

That is some good homework.

Though I can agree with the Maybin and Whitner picks, the rest are 20/20, picking and choosing. Hindsight is always clearer.

How you screw up the Whitner/Ngata pick, and then screw up the Maybin/Orakpo pick is beyond me.

Seriously.

the thing that i find telling is that if you swap mccargo for mangold instead of hester, and say perhaps david harris instead of woodley... whats the percentage of those players still in the playoffs?

says something about how important it is to hit on early draft picks. Most of those are not crazy changes, and many are even players that fans were calling for at the time...

hopefully buddy will be able to bring some of that back to buffalo. honestly you can only say so much in hindsight, but I dont think many other teams boards do this, and sub in the players we took for their own.

The thing is these aren't all "hindsight is 20/20" picks. A lot of us felt Orakpo was the guy to take over Maybin. A lot of us wanted McKinney over Mike Williams. A lot of us questioned the McGahee pick in general. A lot of us felt Whitner was a reach (although we almost all probably wanted Huff, who was taken a pick earlier). A lot of us wondered why we took a tremendously undersized Parrish as early as we did.

I can keep going.

A lot of us wondered why we took McKelvin over Rogers-Cromartie. A lot of us wondered why we actually traded up into the first round to draft McCargo.

And...so...on.

Why :flirt:;):wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash: Won't change anything. Remember Bills are in a rebuilding mode (again).

Every other team who picked before those players were drafted missed out on them too. Other than Whitner and McCargo, nobody was drafted that far out of where the "experts" had them positioned on draft day.

thing is --- not every team before that pick "missed"

example, washington didnt miss on cushing by taking orakpo. so far it seems we missed badly, made worse by the fact that it was the same position.

GRANTED who knows what 2 years from now holds. Orakpo could get lazy and fall out of the league, and maybin could grow into has body and be a beast. I purely used that example because it was so recent in everyones head.

Perhaps another example would be us not missing on maualuga cause we picked wood. we both got good players.

Whitner/Ngata has to be one of the worst decisions in the history of Bills Drafts...And there has been a TON of bad decisions over the years...Still...Passing on a DT when it's a need and picking an undersized SS in the Top 10??? That's classic bad stuff...REAL bad...Every time I see Whitner on the field I wonder what if...I really do...Plus it does not help that Whitner is no where near the player the Bills thought he would be...Not even close...

Oh well...Spilled milk and all... :flirt:

As you asked for, granted I didn't take the time to really study our needs then as that take a long time but here's a list of guys at the same position (with the exception of 2006 when reversed DT/S) that could have taken instead of who we did who've shown to be better players. The sad part is almost all of them were drafted in the same rounds as the guys we took but a few picks later.
