Bands worse than Nickelback?

I agree. I can't comment on Nickelback since I have never heard one of their songs. I stopped listening to FM radio for new music about a decade ago.

 

I can GUARANTEE, with 100% certainty, that you've heard at least one of their songs.

 

I think one of the reasons people dislike them so much is that they're a marketing machine. Their music is literally everyone -- commercials, teasers, before/after sporting event commercials, video games, etc, etc. I was playing NHL 10 and one of their songs plays in the background! Chad Kroeger is a business genious, albeit not a great musician.

you say that like a band at that level has any say in the matter. its all record label execs, lawyers, and marketing guys. the band just shows up basically.

well, not entirely, though i won't lay claim to saying Canada has produced a large amount of great musical artists -- though how we got the U.S. to adopt celine dion might say more about America than the Great White North

 

that said, aside from Neil, there are a few notables that require mention: Joni Mitchell, Robbie Robertson and The Tragically Hip, a band that's flown under the radar, and has produced some compelling music that, in my opinion, stands up as well as some of the early U2 and REM stuff.

 

that said, Canada has also produced loverboy, so take it for what it's worth. (and yes, i'm not including Rush on either side of the list, because, well, they were ok while i was growing up and then not so much.)

Actually Canada is a hotbed of amazing indie rock these days: Broken Social Scene (and all of their offshoots), Weakerthans, Do Make Say Think, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Silver Mt Zion, Japandroids, the Sadies, the Dears, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, Holy !@#$, Constantines, Besnard Lakes.....list goes on. Lots of amazing bands. Toronto and Montreal have some of the best, and most organized, musical scenes going.

Godspeed, Sliver Mt. Zion, and Arcade Fire are three of my favorite bands of all time and the whole Constellation Records label is full over forward minded indie bands. I know their music isn't for everybody, but I find it inspirational to make music myself and to pursue bands with similar sounds.

 

Vic Chesnutt, who joined the label in 2007 after spending 17 years in Athens, Ga, committed suicide on x-mas eve. I highly suggest his album North Star Deserter.

 

One of the better "offshoot" bands featuring members of Broken Social Scene is Metric. I saw them play a set here in Philly with just the lead singer and the lead guitarist in a lounge, candlelit setting and it was jaw dropping. Plus Emily Haines is super hot for an indie chick.
