I don't think that necessarily means he thinks he's gone, but it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

The problem with him is that he's not that bad where you can just cut him without any thought, but he's terribly disappointing considering where he was drafted and probably isn't deserving of a starting spot on this team. I'd love it if they could get something halfway decent for him, but I just don't see it. The best we can hope for is a miracle that a new coach will reach some untapped potential we haven't noticed yet. :wallbash:

That has got to be the best assessment of Whitner.

And to think, Ngata was there for the taking...

I'm interested in seeing what another coaching staff will do with him. He is versital and was playing great against the run until he got hurt (not benched as someone said earlier). He seems like the type of player that would do better in a more attacking style defense than in our current scheme. I'd like to see him at SS for the full year where they allow him to play at the LOS and blitz instead of lining him up at three different positions.

Your theory sounds fine and good, but actually states one of his biggest problems, and that problem includes many of our other defenders as well. When Donte Whitner plays near the line of scrimmage, he is eventually going to get injured because he is just TOO SMALL. I would give him at most 3 games before he gets injured again playing near the LOS. And that goes for many on our TINY defense. Undersized guys playing out of position. They all get hurt. Whitner is a marginal backup in the NFL game because he is too small to play near the LOS consistently without getting hurt, and he is definitely not quick enough nor has the instincts to play a good FS or nickel cornerback. How our front office did not see that is unbelievable.

Poz played at a very high level the second half of the season.

Difference of opinion I guess. I'm not saying Poz is bad. In my opinion he went from invisible to good role player by the second half of the year. The comparison to Fletcher however is the main point. Poz is less durable and doesn't appear to my eyes to be an upgrade over Fletcher. If anything he is a downgrade because Fletcher always made more tackles. Wasting a 2nd round pick on a guy that doesn't upgrade a position is a waste of resources.

It's not nearly as bad our CB situation though. For 8 years out of the last 20 we have made our first pick a guy to play in the secondary. That is 40%!!!!!!! To extend it beyond the first round, lets not forget the Jarius Byrd (STAR), Ko Simpson, Ashton Youbouty 2nd and 3rd picks we have used as well.

Replacing veterans with newly drafted youth that you have to pay the same amount but don't produce any better results is something of a waste in my opinion. If we can't trade Donte for anything sign him to a contract commensurate with his performance and spend your draft picks elsewhere.

No Bills can know if still here

No Bill can know here

...Bill c...know here

Bill...c…ow…here

Bill Cowher!

What could be clearer than that!

This is the greatest thing I have ever read in the history of ever.

Sounds like he knows he is a goner....

QUOTE TO NOTE

"Nobody likes uncertainty but nobody is promised a job next year. You don't know who's going to be here, or what's going to happen. The best thing to do is take the offseason, get your mind clear, stay in shape ... We're going to do everything possible to get to where we need to go because our fans deserve more - and we deserve more." -- S Donte Whitner.

I agree Donte, you better stay in shape.

Big change from last year, where he was promising he would remain a starter. Due to DJ, he did start at the beginning of the season, but was benched (for the best) soon. Next step, cut his #8 draft pick salary.

I don't read that at all?

He started the season strong. I was at the Tampa Bay game when he had the pick 6. He was not benched, he got hurt.

I will agree that Byrd is a better option at FS, no doubt. I cannot see from my perspective watching tha games that Wilson is better that Donte at SS. Wilson had more picks but it would take a lot of film study to see who actually graded out better in all areas of the game. If the coaches decide that Wilson grades out better at SS then Donte is relegated to a nickel or dime back. Is his salary that high next year to warrant cutting him? I like having the depth at DB. This year really proved that we need it.

I just don't understand all the hate for this guy. I do understand that he was a #8 pick but it is not like he dogs it or that he has no talent. He is known to be a leader on a team that sorely lacks leadership. He has the entire DB group at his house every week to study film, review the game plan and to bond. The DB coach has cited his leadership as a reaon for the combined success of this unit. He has been nothing but a team player ... Oh yeah, thats right, he is not Ngata.

I could a find a player that we "should have drafted" in just about every draft. Wow!
