Shannahan was allegedly offered $10 mil. + a piece of the team. Cowher was rumored to have talked to the team and now apparently is sticking with TV. You've heard the comment that "If Cowher wants to coach this season, he might have to take the job in Buffalo." Like it's some kind of prison sentence. Why can't we land a top-flight head coach? We ARE an NFL franchise right? One of thirty two. Is it Ralph, our personnel, the tough division, the city itself, the weather, or a combination of everything?

This would be my guess...

I wonder how much other GM's and coaches know about what happened behind the scenes with Bill Polian. Ralph fired one of the greatest GM's of all time. Indy made the playoffs 9 times in the last 10 years. A slightly better decade than we have experienced.

My guess is it's a little bit of everything. We have a meddling, 91 year old owner, a losing culture that is extremely difficult to shed (see Cubs, Lions, Sabres, Browns, etc) and to top it off sh*tty weather. A lot of people from Buffalo are sensitive to criticism of the city because they/we are from here. We are a city that dwells on the glory days of the past, whether iit be our sports teams or the economy. Our city and our sports teams have done nothing innovative to improve the situations that have been dealt to us. For example Pittsburgh was every bit the blue collar, factory town that Buffalo was/is. The difference is Pittsburgh has changed with the times and has moved towards being a tech centered city. Think of it from an outsiders perspective...why the hell would anyone want to come here and deal with Ralph, 7 (not 8) homes games a year, our losing culture and the fact that is cold as f*ck 7 months out of the year.

My guess would be Ralph and his age.

Kind of hard to ignore the guys age, and not to think of the ramifications if he dies in the middle of your contract.

I don't think that was ever credibly sourced. As I recall, someone said that the Bills would have to offer him $10M/yr plus equity to get him, not that they in fact made the offer.

Ralph's age creates a lot of uncertainty regarding the future of the franchise.

I still believe it's mostly due to our personnel. We have no QB, no OT's, and an aging and ineffective defensive line. Quarterback and continuity on the offensive line are the most difficult positions to develop and take a long time to do so. We're just not very close to being a winning team.

Very small market town with not much to offer someone not born there. Uncertainty of the teams future after Ralph passes. It is a train wreck currently with no known sound QB in place. At absolute best a 3 year plan away from becoming a factor even in the AFC east. If you were an experienced HC with a family and had other choices would you go there?

our owner has entrusted a smarmy marketing sports management type to stick his nose in football decisions. Now actually he is running (ruining) the team.

You think a coach in demand is going to want to accept input and possibly be overruled by Russ Brandon?

From the perspective of an outsider considering joining the Bills' staff, keep in mind:

It's not just that Ralph signs off on the decisions, it's that he isn't qualified to be involved and screws things up. There are other owners that get involved, but they are more knowledgeable about players, running a winning organization, etc.

It's not that Ralph is old and may expire soon. It's unlikely someone would buy the team and immediately dump everyone. The problem is he has a reputation for being a cheap owner, who will not let a GM and Coach make the player moves (because of the price) they need to succeed. Knowledgeable coaches and GMs know Wilson's history of not paying for high-priced free agents and not paying our own stars to stay with the team. Anyone who is any good would realize they would not be given a chance to do a good job.

What a dumb statement......talk about "smarmy"

Excuse me, what makes you think a "marketing guy"cant be a CEO?

How many people running a sports organization, not on the pure personel level, but the entrie organization, have actual experience in the game, itself?

We are a decaying rust belt city that has been losing middle-class industrial jobs and population since the 70s- the state and local governments idea of a plan is to beat a dead horse harder, trying to think of ways to suck more money out of a dwindling pot, our owner can't or won't compete in free agency or staff salaries, and more damaging is that jobs are given out more on cronyism than any measure of performance - oh and they lose a home game every year to a neutral maybe even hostile forum- oh and the owner could pass at anytime- oh and because of our losing rep and rep of bad weather we have to pay free agents a premium- oh and I'd bet we have former Bills all over the NFL bad mouthing us- I'm certain that T.O. will be one of them next year.

It doesn't help when you drive down the 90 past the Williamsville Commie Toll Barrier and you see heaps of shacks and huts lining the 90 as you go past Polkaville before the turn towards the 90/190 split.
