Wooderson Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I'm looking for some good movies to pick up, and just wondering what are some of your favorite movies of all time? Here are some of mine, in no particular order: Dazed and Confused Clockwork Orange Lord of the Rings Trilogy Star Wars Trilogy Animal House Dial M for Murder One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Night of the Living Dead The Matrix Some Like It Hot Rear Window Casablanca Gangs of New York
Hazed and Amuzed Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 D&C Memento Pre Dogma Kevin Smith Braveheart Pulp Fiction Donnie Darko w commentary on. Remember the Titans Rocky II Matrix A waking life I heart Huckabees Breakfast at Tiffany's Beetlejuice A long Kiss Goddnight The Usual Suspects Interview with a Vampire(much cooler then this recent wave of vamp flicks). Heathers Bill and Ted(underrated ridiculousness) Pee Wee's Big Adventure My Life I love movies bro, I grew up working at a Blockbuster because of that fact. I never really participate in these movie discussions simply because I know that I'll do things like reply to my own threads and kick myself for forgetting to insert a flick on a list and it will bug me. But since you started it, I thought I'd jump in. I think we have similar taste in some regard. This is just a quick list, I gotta go to work so more will follow later.
Astrojanitor Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Careful (92) Dawn of the Dead (78) There Will Be Blood (06) Two Lane Blacktop (72?) Harold and Maude (71) Cool Hand Luke (67) everything by Kenneth Anger They Live (88) The Avenging Disco Godfather (79) Head (68) Velvet Goldmine (98) Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (77) Suspiria (77) Repo Man (84) Brick (05) everything Jean Luc Godard made from 1959-1967 Carnival of Souls (63) Lady Snowblood (71?) i should mention I have a masters in film and am obsessed with trashy/campy "grindhouse" type films. My tastes are all either avant garde or kung fu.
Hazed and Amuzed Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Also ANYTHING by Luc Besson. esp. The Professional and Fifth Element.
Hazed and Amuzed Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Bruce Willis is great in Unbreakable also.
Astrojanitor Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 oh, or anything that's come out of the "Something Weird" label. Every movie they release is either genius or unwatchable...kind of a crap shoot. Psyched by the 4-D Witch or any Herschel Gordon Lewis film is guaranteed gold.
Astrojanitor Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 I also find it odd no one talks about Buffalo 66--the only movie about trying to enact a revenge killing on Scott Norwood for shanking that kick.

It's been brought up on here a few times. Personally I'm not a Gallo fan. I want to be but I just don't like his style.

I like your list, haven't seen a bunch of them but the ones that I do recognize are great. Usual Suspects was a pleasant surprise when I first saw it, also agree with Braveheart, Donnie Darko, and Pulp Fiction. I actually just saw Memento last weekend and was blown away. Christopher Nolan really did a great job, I loved the film's direction and how it was shown almost fully in reverse. Careful (92)Dawn of the Dead (78) There Will Be Blood (06) Two Lane Blacktop (72?) Harold and Maude (71) Cool Hand Luke (67) everything by Kenneth Anger They Live (88) The Avenging Disco Godfather (79) Head (68) Velvet Goldmine (98) Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (77) Suspiria (77) Repo Man (84) Brick (05) everything Jean Luc Godard made from 1959-1967 Carnival of Souls (63) Lady Snowblood (71?) i should mention I have a masters in film and am obsessed with trashy/campy "grindhouse" type films. I haven't seen many on your list, but I have seen Harold and Maude which was a cool cult film and Dawn of the Dead, which is awesome. I loved Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and Dawn of the Dead certainly didn't disappoint as the follow-up film.

I agree with you for Gallo's post-Buffalo 66 work. the Brown Bunny, in particular, is just ridiculous nonsense. But man, few things make me as happy as fat Norwood sitting shirtless in his strip club. "we;re spanning time...spanning time" cracks me up...love it.

shrader Posted December 22, 2009 Posted December 22, 2009 Since you've got a few trilogies in there, I have to throw the Indiana Jones and Die Hard movies out there. Sure, they have their weak spots, but I could sit and watch all three back to back at any point. And yes, I have a hard time putting the new movies in with those thanks to the time in between releases.

Delete This Account Posted December 23, 2009 Posted December 23, 2009 off top of my head, in no particular order: -- Michael Clayton (Clooney, the new Bogey) -- Shakespeare in Love (one of the most seamlessly put together stories ever put on film) -- It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (though it's somewhat dated by 6th viewing, the first 5 are a laugh riot with an all-star cast) -- To Have and Have Not (Bogey, being Bogey at his best, and I put it ahead of Casablanca, because I thought Bogey-Bacall was far more searing connection, though supporting cast far superior in Casablanca) -- Citizen Kane (well, d'uh, put yourself back in that time and imagine how revolutionary that movie must've been) -- Angry 12 Men (for a film that had no action, what a gripping story) -- Alien (because it was scary then and still is.) -- The Verdict (Newman at his most vulnerable best. just saw it again recently, and i was totally blown away.) -- The Sting (Newman and Redford at their young cockeyed best ... and a great story with fantastic supporting cast) -- Saving Private Ryan (wow.) -- The Godfather I, then II. ----- some honorable mentions: -- Aliens (might be Cameron's best action movie ... and no haven't seen Avatar, but the cranked intensity that runs through 2 is remarkable) -- Children Of Men (apocalyptic brilliance) -- Lost in Translation (having been to Japan, there's just something right with this movie, and only one on my list with female director) -- Nobody's Fool (Newman and Jessica Tandy, can even put up with Melanie Griffith ... to me it's Newman's "Hurt." as in Johnny Cash's career wouldn't have been complete without redoing "Hurt.") -- Star Wars III and V (or whichever the first and third ones were), because they were good. -- Glengarry Glen Ross. -- Ronin (best car chase) -- It's a Wonderful Life -- Reservoir Dogs -- Death Proof (best car chase with a person hanging on the hood) -- Blade Runner (though a little dated, a fine effort from my favorite director) -- Forgetting Sarah Marshall (something about this movie that refused to follow a paint-by-number script) -- Rachel Getting Married (JDemme shows why he's still very relevant, and what a performance by Anne Hathaway.) i'm sure i'm missing a whole bunch, but gave them some real thought. jw
