Guest dog14787 Posted December 3, 2009 Share Posted December 3, 2009 Much of the credit for any improvement in our Buffalo Bills football team recently has been going to Perry Fewell and Perry deserves allot of credit, he really does, the Bills play with a different attitude, are much more aggressive and play to win. When it comes to the offense being successful though we also need to give another coach some credit. Originally this was not AVP's offense, the Bills QB coach was put in charge out of the blue and asked to win ball games with an offense someone else designed. To make matters worse the HC, DJ was never sold on the offense to begin with so he decided it would be better to tone it down, make it simpler. Turk Shonert would have none of that and lost his job because of it. So here steps in AVP starting his first stint at OC one week before the season starts with a muzzled offense that doesn't work and to really make things interesting, running the no huddle behind a Rookie O-line. The point I'm trying to make here is some folks including myself were pointing there finger at AVP for our Offenses inability to get first downs, stay on the field and score points. AVP through it all has kept plucking away, adding new wrinkles and looking for anything he could do to make his offense more productive. I believe Perry Fewell, being a much more aggressive coach has allowed AVP the freedom to do what they promoted him to do which is to run the offense the way he see's fit without restraints and we are starting to see the fruits of AVP's labor. So its not only Perry Fewell we should be looking at over the next five games and considering for a possible future coaching position for this Buffalo Bills Football team, AVP should be considered as well... They've updated Fewell to "Interim Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator", but they still only list Van Pelt as "Quarterbacks Coach". I wouldn't take Fitzy's comments at face value, Big Cat. At very least, Fewell made the decision to start Fitzpatrick and Fred Jackson didn't he? You don't think Van Pelt made those decision do you? In addition, the Bills used A TON of double tight end against Miami and made liberal use of the fullback as well. If nothing else, all this sort of stuff has to be at least rubber stamped by the head coach, if he didn't actually initiate it. It's clear from Schonert's parting shots that he felt handcuffed by Jauron. The coordinator should work at the bidding of the head coach. I would not dismiss the possible contributions made by Fewell. He may have made some significant decisions and at very least, he is now letting his offensive coordinator do what he wants without interference. ishouldbegm Posted December 3, 2009 Share Posted December 3, 2009 avp is still a ****ty cordinator, our best plays the past few weeks has been audibles doesnt use play action enough, his trick plays suck, doesnt run fred jackson enough or throw to him on wheel routes, doesnt use evans, nelson. hes went from awful to poor, so he has improved a little. he comes out in 4-5 wide all the time with a ****ty oline, hes brillant. I'm not positive on this but it sounds like AVP might be looking back at the films of Metz, McKellar and Mueller. Just a thought. That offensive set opened up Andre and Lofton ALOT. One possible explanation for the improvement we're seeing is that Jauron interfered with/harmed the offense and AVP in a misguided effort to improve things; whereas Fewell has simply decided not to mess with anything offense-related. In other words, without the weight of Jauron dragging him down, AVP is now free to rise to his natural level. Hopefully that level will turn out to be nice and high; but that remains to be seen. Though, I suggest it's premature to judge these Bills as improved. Miami was just one win. One. If they look good versus the Jets.. then maybe it's time to start a band wagon for AVP and company. Going 4/5 is smart when you have a ****ty OLine because it spreads the defense and gives the QB easier hot reads as there are less guys in the box who can blitz. He was given responsibility for the passing game and play calling responsibilities, but no change in title or overall responsibility. That may in fact be how things are running now that the Dick is gone, but AVP is not the Bills OC. There is not one officially. I am sure this was done at the time to make this season a trial run for AVP as an OC - to see if he could handle it - and then make a decision at year end whether to officially promote him or bring somebody in without putting themselves in a position of having to fire AVP. You do not average 4 yds per carry, especially with a questionable OL, if you show a run formation every time. In the Miami game I only recall a handful of plays with 4/5 wide, and this was acheived by moving the RB out to the wing. I do not see a problem with this.
