rpcolosi Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I just saw this movie today and I have to agree 100%...an astonishing story and I too will be following this guy. the book is significantly better. i wated Oher or Orakpo. I let brandon have it while I was at the draft screaming after the maybin pick. real smart. way to work that one through .i put it on jauron still. brandon doesn;t know what he's doing. we lal know DJ had a lot of say in personnel moves. move maybin to OLB please. he will finally succeed. he is BUILT for an OLB in a 3-4
The Senator Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 You sure do change your mind a lot. ??? ??? Actually Faustus, The Senator is a model of consistency. If you'd pay closer attention, you'd know that truth. Here's what I posted prior to last April's draft... link #1 - The Senator - 4/17/09 link #2 - The Senator - 4/8/09
HopsGuy Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 ??? ??? Actually Faustus, The Senator is a model of consistency. If you'd pay closer attention, you'd know that truth. Here's what I posted prior to last April's draft... link #1 - The Senator - 4/17/09 link #2 - The Senator - 4/8/09 You go, Senator. Like all weak men he laid an exaggerated stress on not changing one's mind. - W. Somerset Maugham Weren't there quite a few high quality OTs available in the draft and that was part of Oher dropping? I don't remember him being tagged as dogging it, but I wouldn't discount it. After reading "The Blind Side"last year, I took special note of Oher's play. It seemed like whomever lined up across from him was basically taken out of the play by either power or finesse.* *The same could have been said of Andre Smith. Smith was even getting some talk as a #1 (IIRC). When you're that good, it's easy to get bored. Smith then decided he just didn't care at all. Cincinnati still took him high after he showed up at the combine completely out of shape. Of course he broke his foot on his first day of practice after a lengthy hold-out. Then again, Oher is a guy that was basically illiterate at 15 who later chose to leave the "football track" major of Sociology at Ole Miss to pursue a degree in Communications. Here's Michael Lewis from "The Blind Side".
PromoTheRobot Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 For a robot, you're generally pretty well-informed and level-headed. But there wasn't a single person that I can remember who said Maybin was "can't miss." In fact, he was pretty much labeled as the "hit or miss"/"high risk/high reward" player of the first round, if I recall. I'm still on record for wanting to draft Orakpo at #11. I wasn't crazy about Oher having a learning disability. I love him as a kid and I hope for the best, but I'm not going to pretend this was the guy I wanted at #11. Thank you. I like to think I am fairly rational, if not a bit cynical. That's why posts like these drive me up a wall. Everyone knows who is guaranteed to be great. Everyone knows who is gonna bust. But that's because before the draft EVERY player is labelled a future all-pro or a bust. That way someone can always say they knew. As for Oher, if he were the first Tackle taken in the draft then you can say the Bills blew it. But Oher was the 4th tackle taken at #20. So 3 other teams that needed a tackle thought Oher was not the best player. If it were obvious he would have went sooner. Also, how do you know the Bills didn't have Oher slotted at 28? PTR
DarthICE Posted November 28, 2009 Author Posted November 28, 2009 Funny thing about the draft, you can't pick every player and you can't pick where you pick. We needed D-line help too. There were just as many draftniks who though Maybin was "can't miss". I find it amazing how this board knew exactly which players were going to be great...now. By the way, how is Oher doing? Is he the top LT in the NFL now or is it that he has a movie that makes him so good? PTR I wanted Oher at our pick and Hated the Maybin pick so no hindsight for me.
PromoTheRobot Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I wanted Oher at our pick and Hated the Maybin pick so no hindsight for me. Then you get a gold star. Congrats. PTR
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 the book is significantly better. was going to be my question. I loved the book, and was thinking of seeing the movie (saw 2012 instead yesterday).
CosmicBills Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 ... (saw 2012 instead yesterday). Ouch!
iinii Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 There is not a chance in hell. Sandra Bullock looks absolutely frightning as a blonde. Frightening is not exactly the word I would use
The Senator Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 You go, Senator. Like all weak men he laid an exaggerated stress on not changing one's mind. - W. Then again, Oher is a guy that was basically illiterate at 15 who later chose to leave the "football track" major of Sociology at Ole Miss to pursue a degree in Communications. Here's Michael Lewis from "The Blind Side". Yeah, as you can see from my link, I had Oher going to us at #11 - and I liked him better than Eugene Monroe or Andre Smith. I had the Bills taking C Alex Mack with the #28 pick (he went to the Browns with the Eagles #21 pick that Brandon should have insisted on in the Peters trade), but we got a good one in Eric Wood - if his leg heals, he'll prove to be a fine pick. I also addressed Oher's supposed 'illiteracy' and accusations that he was 'dogging it' academically. For a guy with a learning disability, he scored better that twice as high as FatBoy Peters on the Wonderlic - which really makes you wonder if Peters has some learning disability of his own... link 1 link 2 Just pointing out to Faustus et al that, going into draft day, Oher was The Senator's pick.
Acantha Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Here ya go, oh consistent one. You want him, then your glad we passed and took Maybin, then what could Brandon possibly be thinking!
The Senator Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Here ya go, oh consistent one. You want him, then your glad we passed and took Maybin, then what could Brandon possibly be thinking! Thanks for that link reiterating my statement that, prior to the draft, I thought they should have taken Oher instead of Maybin.
RU Serious Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Sandy was extremly hot on leno last night.. http://www.hulu.com/watch/108423/the-jay-l...-bullock-part-2
Acantha Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Thanks for that link reiterating my statement that, prior to the draft, I thought they should have taken Oher instead of Maybin. I never said you didn't say that. I said you change your mind a lot, pretty much whenever it suits your need apparently.
High Mark Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Well 20 other teams passed on him too, including 3 other teams who drafted LTs. If it was such a slam-dunk sure thing he would have gone much earlier. You rear-view mirror experts are a hoot. PTR Whats your excuse for passing on Orakpo then. He WAS a "slam-dunk sure thing" Bottom line is the Bills should have taken Orakpo at 11, and never settleed for the Eagles 28th pick. Landing the earlier of their firsts would have allowed us to draft Oher later. Thats what A real front office would have done. Which is not hidsight, as this entire board was curious as to how we let the second Eagles first round end up in our hands.
Miyagi-Do Karate Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 I did see Blind Side today, and it was great--just as good as the book. By the way, you know if the end of the movie was the Bills drafting Oher, it would have been a major letdown? "In April 2009, the Buffalo Bills selected Michael Oher with the 11th pick in the NFL draft. In September 2009, the Buffalo Bills placed Michael Oher on injured reserve."
VADC Bills Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 How about reading the book instead of seeing the movie? The reason he dropped in the draft is that his college career was good but marked by inconsistent play and a thought that he dogged it sometimes. Wrong, the reason he dropped in the draft was that teams were concerned over the fact that he had a learning disability. How would he handle the more complex systems....His college play was very consistant that's what made him a first rounder. I believe you may be referring to Andre Smith.
NyQuil Posted November 29, 2009 Posted November 29, 2009 I thought sandra bullock looked outstanding 100% agree. I saw the movie on Thanksgiving, very enjoyable.
