I've been there for the past three years and I help manage a staff of RNs and NCAs (nurse assistants). I've been out of work on FMLA due to a back injury for the better part of the last couple months, and last night I rec'd a disturbing text from one of my nurses. Here is the link to the story behind what happened.... Story I've worked with this guy almost every night for three years. I don't know whether he did this or not, but his career is likely ruined. We get psych patients all the time, and they make all sorts of crazy claims, so I just don't know what to think. Have any of you guys ever dealt with something like this?? I totally agree, and that's the approach I take when I provide care, but this was a situation where he was assigned to a "sitter" role. Whenever we get involuntary admissions, we have to provide a 1:1 observation at all times, and it sounds like that's what he was doing. (I wasn't there, so not positive.) We round on our patients at least every hour, and most of our rooms are semi-private. Having sex with a patient in the room would just be very difficult, not to mention the fact that I just can't imagine this guy doing such a thing. Whenever he's been in the sitter role before, he's always been good about staying awake (at night), doing work on his laptop for school. I really can't believe this. A pediatric Dr. at Strong was arrested for possessing child porn and I have a friend who worked closely with him. He and everyone else who worked closely with this Dr. were shocked. Criminals often times don't look like criminals. Lets hope the accusation is false for the sake of this young girl, your co-worker, and the reputation of the hospital. I'm hoping DNA clears this up. Or at least not coerced - because "consent" implies an ability to understand and assent to a request, which is probably presumed doubtful in a psych case, particularly an involuntary one. Which is also what makes cases like this so ugly. Even with forensic evidence, it can be a case of "he said, she said", with "she said" being "the state, prosecuting the case, is testifying on her behalf". It's quite possible the nurse is guilty of nothing more than being stupid...or nothing at all. And still be convicted...or worse, be acquitted but STILL have to go on an offender's list, simply because of the accusation. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ajzepp Posted November 26, 2009 Author Share Posted November 26, 2009 you guys make some interesting points. Is it likely he admitted to the act given the fact that he was fired? I would have expected the hospital to suspend him pending the investigation, but apparently he was fired today. It would definitely be more feasible (given the fact that I know the guy) if the only reason they're using the word "assault" is because of the patient/caregiver role, and he was perhaps under the impression that she was willing to have sex. People can always surprise you, and you never know them as well as you think you do, but I know enough about him in the professional setting to feel very strongly that he would never "assault" someone, where he forced himself on them in a violent way.
