Beerball Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 link I cannot imagine the frustration that turned into feelings of futility and worse as he laid there year after year unable to communicate.
BuffaloBill Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Wow 40% thought to be in a vegetative state are not. Of course looking around the office 40% of those in an alert state .....
Acantha Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 link I cannot imagine the frustration that turned into feelings of futility and worse as he laid there year after year unable to communicate. Hard to believe he's sane enough to communicate.
Albany,n.y. Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 About 40 years ago there was an Alfred Hitchcock or a Twilight Zone episode where the guy had the same thing, only he cried and the tear saved him from that fate.
Bullpen Posted November 23, 2009 Posted November 23, 2009 Good grief, that story freaked me out. Like Faustus said, how he maintained his sanity through that ordeal is beyond me.
ieatcrayonz Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 link I cannot imagine the frustration that turned into feelings of futility and worse as he laid there year after year unable to communicate. The headline says it all: Paralysed Belgium misdiagnosed as in coma for 23 years How the heck can anyone tell the difference?
WVUFootball29 Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Good grief, that story freaked me out. Like Faustus said, how he maintained his sanity through that ordeal is beyond me. reminds me of an old Alfred Hitchcock episode. guy was in a car accident and completely paralyzed and the doctors thought he was brain dead and were going to finish him off
HopsGuy Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 You're not going to believe this, but this whole story is rubbish. James Randi weighs in
Beerball Posted November 24, 2009 Author Posted November 24, 2009 You're not going to believe this, but this whole story is rubbish. James Randi weighs in I'm gonna need more than the word of The Amazing Randi before I dis-believe.
Acantha Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I'm gonna need more than the word of The Amazing Randi before I dis-believe. I'd say I'm the opposite. When I said "hard to believe", I meant it. I'm not saying it's impossible (I just don't know that much about this medical conditions), but I'm far more inclined to belive it's fake.
Britbillsfan Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Just watched a video of this guy and it looked his 'helper' typing using the poor chap's hand whilst he blithely does not even look at the keyboard (or even seem aware of what is going on around him). If he is not even looking at the keyboard how can he 'guide' the person typing. Looks like bs to me. Unfortunately. I'm with Randi with this one.

Pretty sure it was Twilight Zone. He worked and worked, and finally was able to move one finger slightly. They pulled him out of storage, and moved his arms and hands so that the moving finger couldn't be seen. IIRC, that's when the tear came. There was a "House" episode with Mos Def. They were going to harvest his heart, when House noticed that his eyes slightly moved.

Steely Dan Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I'm gonna need more than the word of The Amazing Randi before I dis-believe. Just out of curiosity how long has your wife been in a coma? I mean she has to be to stay with you, right?
Cugalabanza Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 What he said. I've seen a little bit of this Facilitated Communication up close. Looks like a big hoax to me.
Marv's Neighbor Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 Does he have any Coaching experiance?
Assquatch Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 This was a movie Johnny got his gun or something like that, which was the basis of Metallica's "One": I can't remember anything Can't tell if this is true or dream Deep down inside I feel the scream This terrible silence stops it there Now that the war is through with me I'm waking up, I cannot see That there's not much left of me Nothing is real but pain now Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please god, help me Back in the womb it's much too real In pumps life that I must feel But can't look forward to reveal Look to the time when I'll live Fed through the tube that sticks in me Just like a wartime novelty Tied to machines that make me be Cut this life off from me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please god, wake me Now the world is gone I'm just one Oh god, help me Hold my breath as I wish for death Oh please god, help me Darkness imprisoning me All that I see Absolute horror I cannot live I cannot die Trapped in myself Body my holding cell Landmines has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell edit: link and Lyrics added
Britbillsfan Posted November 25, 2009 Posted November 25, 2009 I've seen a little bit of this Facilitated Communication up close. Looks like a big hoax to me. Hoax is a bit kind. Deliberately giving relatives false hope seems to be pretty evil in my mind.
HopsGuy Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 One of my email pen-pals* wrote on the subject. *Okay, we exchanged emails once, but still... Michael Shermer is a well known skeptic. He's been on Penn & Teller's . He's also given a talk at TED. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.
ieatcrayonz Posted November 26, 2009 Posted November 26, 2009 What he said. Does the "Steely Dan thinks it is a fake so it must be true or vice versa" rule apply to this like Sean Taylor, the dead census worker and hundreds of other news items? Or does the "blind squirrell finds a nut" rule apply? Stay tuned for the answer.
