The impending Tsunami of lies

Obviously it has started already, but be prepared not to believe virtually any quote that comes out of the mouths, directly (with quotes around it), indirectly (sourced) or rumored ("sources say") from ANY owner, GM, coach, pundit, reporter or candidate for the job.

Ralph is not going to say anything public that has any worth because he wants at least one of the top several names for the coach and GM post to accept whatever Ralph has in mind for how much he wants to pay and how much control he wants to give up. He can't, for instance, even acknowledge that the Bills have talked to Gruden or Shanahan or Cowher or anyone because he doesn't know which of them may or may not bite at his offer. He may WANT one guy more than another but he can't tell who is going to agree, so EACH candidate has to think he is the top choice, or right at the top.

NONE of the major candidates is going to directly say they want JOB A in CITY A or JOB B in CITY B. They are going to say nothing but good things about the franchise and city (like Holmgren just did about Cleveland) whether or not they have any intention whatsoever in taking that job, have or have not been approached or offered a job. The more cities and teams out there that are in contention, the more leverage they have in their negotiations for money and control.

NO reporter or analyst or columnist or pundit (with very few exceptions in very isolated instances) is going to get the straight dope from people with direct specific knowledge and facts of the situation, even off the record, for the same reasons stated above. Until something is all but a done deal, there are going to be lies, half-truths, blatant ball-washing and non-committal answers coming from the candidates themselves, the agents for the candidates, and the teams after the candidates, all jockeying for position for the top four or five (lets say Cowher, Shanahan, Gruden, Dungy, Holmgren) trying not to alienate any of them just in case the guy or guys they are really after take other jobs or turn them down or stay retired.

Because of the advent of the Internet, all of the bloggers and pundits and news reporters from newspapers in financial trouble are much more apt to report rumor or hearsay as fact, trying to get the scoop on one of the major candidates. This is going to lead to flooding of unsubstantiated reports of sightings and signings and verbal agreements, etc.

Knowing the above, team officials are going to use that knowledge to feed the frenzy, which will exponentially cause more disinformation.

Twitter and other social networking that are just now getting the players attention is going to make the more attention grubbing sorts sending out more and more conjecture than ever, and rumors are going to come from rumors, making it worse and worse.

We're in for one fresh hell of misinformation in the next few months. Enjoy the ride.

This is just speculation on my part, but somehow, somewhere its very possible Jim Kelly is bending over backwards trying to convince Bill Cowher its time to come back to the NFL and Buffalo is the place be, I mean we seen the pole here on TSW, he's blowing everyone away, and if there's one truth its that RW is willing to spend whatever and do whatever he has to do to turn the franchise around and I really believe this is his intentions.

Bill Cowher is probably being courted like he's the best thing since Thomas Edison invented the light bulb right about now.

Kelly's not really being negative in my opinion PTR, his post is probably close to being right on.

I'm actually not being negative whatsoever, nor am I blaming anyone for what is about to happen. I would actually blame someone if they WERE being honest: it would be bad for business, bad for their team, bad for their contemporaries and especially bad for themselves.

I would imagine Kelly is doing that, too. He's also in a better position to do something like that because he has no official capacity with the team. Who knows who he thinks is better or worse for the job than anyone else, and who he may be lobbying, but Kelly loves The Bills, and Buffalo, and he wants the best guy here for the job whether he will be part of the ownership group or not.

Not seeing the negativity. I think he's right, don't expect to really have any inkling what's happening until a guy actually signs on the dotted line.

Regardless of what PTR thinks (no offense Promo), this might be one of the best thread titles I've ever seen on TSW!! :(

Kelly, you never fail to entertain! (BTW, I didn't think you were being overly negative either, just very candid.)

Are you serious?

Dude, you are one constant, non-stop stream of negativity. For God's sake - you declared the Sabres would miss the playoffs because they only got one point in GAME ONE of this season. It doesn't get any worse than that.

+1

I did not see what was so bad about Kelly's post...in fact it is dead on and 100 percent accurate

:( We're gonna hear tons of stories for the next few months that the Bills are contacting this person and that person, then we'll hear from the media that this person is interested and that person is not interested...etc...etc. Truth is, we're not really going to know anything until a decision has been actually made by Ralph.

Bill Cowher is a very good football coach, but has he been called on to change a franchise's losing culture since 1992? Has he done it successfully more than once?

I disagree.

Why is it that we don't know anything that's going on or we're being lied to, if someone other than Shannahan is hired? Just because a team source says they're interested in someone, that doesn't mean they have to or will hire that person. It simply means that... they're interested. So they'll research, review, and perhaps even talk to that individual. But, to continue with the Shanny example, suppose through that process it's revealed that Shanny wants to do something completely contrary to the ownership? Suppose, they make a huge offer to Shanny, but he turns them down - after his own careful consideration? Does that mean we were lied to? No, it means that for various reasons, that we may never know, Shanny didn't work out.

So, why is ot a lie? It's not. The world is not black and white. Reporters write what they hear and research. But, that doesn't mean the story doesn't change a week later. And just because a story changes, that doesn't mean the initial story was wrong or a lie.

So what about this Gruden deal: "Hey we tried hard to get this guy" but he wants to keep his TV job...

What kind of crap is that? No notice of interview (those events are usually public knowledge, eh?), just "Oh we tried."

Is this Gruden stuff just fabricated?

Any thoughts on the Gruden thing?
