Homgren to the Browns?

Recommended Posts

It looks like Browns owner Randy Lerner is pursuing Paul Holmgren to be football czar with the Browns. This has been rumored to be the kind of position that Holmgren was looking for. With the Mangini-Kokonis experiment an unqualified disaster in Cleveland, Lerner is not wasting time moving the organization ahead. Hopefully Ralph is just as aggressive.

On a sub-subject, if the Bills are going to hire a new GM they will have to comply with the Rooney Rule which also encompasses front office/executive level hires. The only candidate I can think of who would be qualified would be James Harris, the former Bills quarterback (Harris and OJ Simpson were rookies together) who was Vice President Player Personnel with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Interestingly,"Harris was the first black player to start a season at quarterback and was also the second black player to start in any game as quarterback in the modern era for a professional football team (Marlin Briscoe of the Denver Broncos was the first in 1968. Interestingly, a few of Harris's completions in 1969 went to Briscoe, who had been traded to the Bills and converted to a receiver.)...In 1974, Harris became the first African-American QB to start a Conference Championship Game...In early 1977 he was traded to the San Diego Chargers to make room for Joe Namath (and to free up his #12 jersey for Namath). When he left the Rams he had the highest career completion average of any quarterback in team history (55.4%) and had been an integral part of four straight NFC West Champions. Jolted by the trade and his confidence gone, he played three years for the Chargers without much success and his career petered out at the end of the 1979 season.

He has been inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame, the Grambling Athletic Hall of Fame, and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame."

In terms of minority candidates, what about the Texans' Bobby Grier? He's their associate director of pro scouting and as a bonus, his son Mike is one of my all-time favorite Sabres.

Excellent. He also worked in the New England organization with Bill Belichick. Outstanding work. BTW, James Harris was hired by former Bills cornerback Martin Mayhew who is in his first year as General Manager of the Detroit Lions. Mayhew is also a minority.

Thank you for less than nothing.

The Rooney Rule is made a joke by the NFL owners. They basically pick some minority candidate whop they already know has a zero percent chance of getting the job and waste their time and his time interviewing him, only to hire the person they want. Yeah, it makes things "look" better, but really, how much does it help? If anything it gives candidates who would never be up for a coaching vacancy a chance to practice interviewing for the job...

Im still waiting for the "Whitey Rule" which requires team to carry a certain number of white players on their rosters throughout training camp - they wouldnt have to make the team, they would just get an equal opportunity. Im sure if the NFL required this we would see a more equal number of white and black players....
