Mark Vader Posted November 4, 2009 Share Posted November 4, 2009 Big money for the box office is about to take place again, as the months of November and December will bring big titles and big names to the silver screen, as this year's holiday season begins. This is also the time where many Oscar contenders will scramble to get their release date in before the year expires to qualify. There is plenty of variety this season to spread around from action to drama to comedy, and all kinds of family films as well, as the holidays bring out plenty of family crowds. Looking to get the first crack at those family dollars is Walt Disney Pictures, as they team up with director Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey in the latest incarnation of the famous Ebenezer Scrooge tale, "A Christmas Carol". You all know the story, and nothing has changed. The new appeal this time is that Zemeckis' motion capture animation style is being used and there will also be releases in 3D-IMAX as well. While this all sounds fun, they are staying true to it's dark moments as well, thus it's "PG" rating. The only thing going against this movie is it's timing. Why release a Christmas centered story when you are only 6 days removed from Halloween? Nevertheless, Disney has been aggressive in it's marketing campaign, as they have been promoting it in cities all over the country for nearly a whole year, using "A Christmas Carol" train as a travelling circus to spark interest. "A Chrsitmas Carol" also stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn and Bob Hoskins. Last year, fans of the "Twilight" series of books were treated to the first book's movie release. While critics generally panned it, fans ate it up, creating a new craze in pop culture. Now the series continues with, "The Twilight Saga: New Moon". When Bella's blood is shed at her birthday celebration, Edward's intense reaction to the event causes his parents to pull up stakes and leave Forks, Washington for the sake of the young lovers. Heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits. The fan base has been eagerly awaiting the new installment, which has a new director in the form of Chris Weitz. Whether the second film can make as much money as the first, remains to be seen. Starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Billy Burke, Dakota Fanning & Michael Sheen. Take away global warming and insert the foretellings of an ancient Mayan calendar then you go from "The Day After Tomorrow" to "2012". An academic researcher leads a group of people in a fight to counteract the apocalyptic events that were predicted by the ancient Mayan calendar. If you want to see all of man's creations destroyed by an angry Earth, you've come to the right place. Starring John Cusack, Thandie Newton, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofer, Woody Harrelson and Danny Glover. Robin Williams and John Travolta star in "Old Dogs". Two friends and business partners find their lives turned upside down when strange circumstances lead to them being placed in the care of 7-year-old twins. Also starring, Seth Green, Matt Dillon, Kelly Preston & Bernie Mac. In the suspense thriller "The Box", A small wooden box arrives on the doorstep of a married couple, who know that opening it will grant them a million dollars and kill someone they don't know. Starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden & Frank Langella. George Clooney, Ewen McGregor, Jeff Bridges & Kevin Spacey star in "The Men Who Stare at Goats". In Iraq, reporter Bob Wilton meets Lyn Cassady, whose seemingly wild claim - that he's a member of the U.S. Army's First Earth Battalion, a unit that employs paranormal powers in their missions - causes Wilton to join Cassady's hunt for the battalion's founder, whose gone missing. The true story of Michael Oher comes to the big screen in, "The Blind Side". A disadvantaged teenager is taken in by a conservative family who see tremendous promise in the young man. Despite certain obstacles, the attention and inspiration he receives helps him mature into an athletically and academically successful NFL prospect. Starring Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron, Tim McGraw & Kathy Bates. A father and son walk for months across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic landscape in search of civilization, in "The Road". Starring Viggo Mortenson, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall, & Guy Pearce. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox", Angry farmers, tired of sharing their chickens with a sly fox, look to get rid of their opponent and his family. Based on the book by Roald Dahl. Starring the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willem Dafoe, Owen Wilson, Michael Gambon & Wes Anderson. "Pirate Radio" is, a 1960's comedy about an illegal radio station run by a band of rogue DJs on a ship in the middle of Britain's North Sea. By defying the tastes and laws of the ruling government, the disc jockeys hooked their listeners on pop music and its attendant ideas of love and free will. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Frost & Bill Nighy. In "The Fourth Kind", An investigator is dispatched to Nome, Alaska to puzzle out a 40-year-long mystery involving an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances in the town. Her videotaped evidence looks to present the most convincing evidence of alien abduction ever documented. Starring Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas & Will Patton. In "Planet 51", The inhabitants of Planet 51 live in fear of alien invasion. Their paranoia is realized when astronaut Chuck Baker arrives from Earth. Befriended by a young resident, he has to avoid capture in order to recover his spaceship and try to return home. Starring the voices of Dwayne Johnson, Sean William Scott, Jessica Biel, Gary Oldman & John Cleese. Finally in "Ninja Assassin", Raizo is a rogue ninja who comes to the aid of Mika Coretti, a Berlin-based Interpol agent who has linked the shadowy Ozunu Clan, a secret society of assassins who trained Raizo, to a series of murders. Most dangerous to them both is Takeshi, Raizo's former ally and the assassin leading the charge of Ozunu killers to Berlin. Starring Rain, Rick Yune & Naomie Harris. First, the much talked about "Precious", In Harlem, an overweight, illiterate teen who is pregnant with her second child is invited to enroll in an alternative school in hopes that her life can head in a new direction. Starring Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'nique, Paula Patton and Mariah Carey. In "The Messenger", An American soldier struggles with an ethical dilemma when he becomes involved with a widow of a fallen officer. Starring Woody Harrelson, Ben Foster, Samantha Morton, Jena Malone & Steve Buscemi. In "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans", Terence McDonagh is a drug- and gambling-addled detective in post-Katrina New Orleans investigating the killing of five Senegalese immigrants. Starring Nicolas Cage, Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Brad Dourif and Russel M Haeuser. "Me and Orson Welles", takes place in NYC, 1937: A week in the life of aspiring actor Richard Samuels, where he finds himself cast in Orson Welles' staging of Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" and falling for an older woman. Starring Zac Efron, Claire Danes, Christian McKay & Ben Chaplin. In "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee", Pippa Lee moves with her much older husband from New York City to a suburban retirement community. Cracks in her facade reveal past experiences, while she steers herself toward a quiet nervous breakdown. Starring Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin, Winona Ryder, Maria Bello and Mike Binder. In "Women in Trouble", Different forms of trouble bring together eight seemingly disparate women over the course of one day in Los Angeles. Starring Carla Gugino, Adrianne Palicki, Marley Shelton & Connie Britton. "Dare" is, A drama centered around three high school seniors - an aspiring actress, her misfit best friend, and a loner - who become engaged in an intimate and complicated relationship. Starring Emmy Rossum, Zach Gilford and Ashley Springer. In "Mammoth", Leo is a web entrepreneur on a business trip to Thailand. When his life takes an unplanned turn, the ripples reach back to his family in New York City, where his wife and daughter have a close relationship with their Filipino nanny. Starring Gael Garcia Bernal, Michelle Williams and Marife Necesito. In "Broken Embraces", Blind screenwriter Harry Caine reveals the secrets of his past to a young associate, from his former life as a filmmaker working under his given name, to the accident which claimed his sight and led to a break-up with Lena, a now-famous actress who lives in a gilded cage with her wealthy older partner. Starring Penelope Cruz, Lluis Homar and Blanca Portillo. In "Red Cliff", Set during the end of China's Han Dynasty, two rivaling warlords make a pact to turn their respective armies against a power hungry general bent on taking over their kingdoms.
