The chatter around the Worthy trade isn't rational
billybrew1 replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
You’re rationalizing the story badly. If Worthy turns into a star and Coleman does not, Beane is an idiot. No ifs, no buts, no coconuts…. And Beane is the most overated GM the Bills have ever had.bHis drafts from Edmunds - 2022 get about a C grade…. That’s it. His FA moves are in the realm of crazy. The Diggs trade, The Diggs contract and especially the Diggs second contract….Ooof! Paying Von like he is at the peak of his career and for so long, just nuts. Why did he give Star and Knox so much money?! WTF is he doing? He is doing it again with Dawkins and TJ….Negotiate Beane! It is like he thinks making players the highest paid is a good thing. I’m afraid to see what we paid Brown, he is not a top notch RT…. we don’t beat KC in the playoffs because their team is better than ours with the exception of the boneheaded :13 sec move and the injury to Tre White…. If the 2023 and 2024 don’t really impress this year, I’m gonna puke, because that means it’s all over….. Were never gonna beat them because they have much better decision makers…. -
Araiza, Edmunds, and Ertz in one thread. My head is exploding. I need another drink.

I'm just going to mention Tremaine Edmunds, to make this an Edmunds thread, and save the mods a headache.

I love Brown and happy for him personally, great day to be him. However, not every guy should get a second contract from the Bills, that is partly why you have the dead cap you have this year. Not all second contracts but Morse, Tre White, Diggs etc are contribting to dead cap this year. Whenever they make a big deal with s player it represents a relatively high risk of a future dead cap hit when/if something goes sideways. Brown has had injury issues...dont see the contract details yet but I am not sure Beane should have done this one. Sometimes you have to move from guys who are good but not great. I felt that way when they about Knox, Bass and Edmunds. Look at Edmunds, Beane finally stopped himself from making the signing and look what happened, Bernard emerged. If that did not happen we would be thinking Beane still "missed" with Bernard probably because he would have never played MLB last year. Maybe the right more would have been to let Brown walk, let Grable, VanDenmark and maybe a draft pick next year fight it out and see who emerges. OK, it sounds like I am hating on Beane, I actually think he is a great GM and I am thankful he is with the Bills but I think he likes to sign his picks a little too much.

The chatter around the Worthy trade isn't rational
Billsguy replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
The two time defending Super Bowl champions have no idea what they are doing by trading with the Buffalo Bills. Some Bills fans would have you believe this. By drafting Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy after trading picks with the Bills, KC proved they know nothing. Right Bills apologists? Anybody could have scored those two TD's that Worthy scored. "Correct", says the apologists. Don't give the Chiefs any credit. Remember how Beane said he was happy Keon Coleman ran a slow 40 yd. dash at the combine? By running slower, he would be available later in the draft for the Bills the "reasoning" goes. Excellent logic. Making excuses for the failings of Brandon Beane is a bit of a sport for Bills fans. The Bills acquired Tredavious White, Zay Jones and Tremaine Edmunds by trading with KC. The Chiefs drafted Mahomes. Can you explain yourself Mr. Beane? -
Have Williams at the historical WILL. Opposite side of the Te. Put Taron on McBride. Obviously, he will have some responsibility in coverage. On 3rd Downs I would like to see Williams used as a Blitzer/Spy. Let him be a Tasmanian devil not a read and react player down in and down out. Milano was deployed this way a lot paired with Edmunds. Also, I think you see many 3 safety looks. Not just Edwards but also Bishop.

I've been seeing a bunch of other teams releasing their announcements of team captains, and I'm jealous now. What's taking the Bills so long? Need a couple recounts on the votes? My guesses are below. Of note, McDermott went with 6 team captains from 2017-2019, then 7 in 2020, 8 in 2021, 9 in 2022, and back to 8 last year. I feel like we might be back to a lower number this year with all the incumbent captains departing? Offense -Allen and Dawkins are locks IMO, although Dawkins hasn't been a captain since 2020 I think he's such a veteran leader he's gotta be one this year. -Mack Hollins. Everyone on the Bills appears to be obsessed with this guy. He might also count as a special teams captain. -Dalton Kincaid? Defense -Bernard. He's the QB of the defense. Edmunds was a team captain basically every year till he left. Now that Bernard is the established starter, he'll get the C. -Von Miller has been a captain each of the last 2 years. Hard for me to think they take it away this year. -Benford? Special Teams -Mack Hollins? (see above) -Casey Toohill?

Based on....what? "He fired special teams coach Heath Farwell, inferring he called for a deep kickoff in the notorious “13 seconds” game which helped the Chiefs tie it in regulation before winning in OT. However, a number of players “off the record” claimed it was McDermott who made the ill-fated call. Farwell was immediately hired to the same position in Jacksonville" "The decision to kick it out of the end zone is what it is. The truth is that the Bills still had more than a 90% win probability, according to NFL Next Gen Stats, as the Chiefs began their drive at their own 25-yard line with 13 seconds left." "Adversity reveals character in any field. Not only did McDermott insult the public by writing off 13 Seconds as an “execution” error. He never owned the defeat privately. He allowed it to linger, and that’s the danger with any trauma. There’s no way for anyone involved to move on unless it’s dealt with head-on. Unless the guilty party takes accountability. McDermott, as Go Long detailed, was the culprit. Yet when his decision to kick a touchback and his defense doomed Buffalo against the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs, there was zero accountability. To delusional proportions. One assistant coach remembers McDermott saying in the locker room that the offense scored too fast and left the Chiefs too much time." "McDermott used a time out before both of the Chiefs’ plays that set up the field goal. He said he wanted to get a look at what formation Andy Reid was using so he could better set up the defense. Whether you blame Frazier or McDermott, neither did a good enough job explaining to the players what they needed to do to avoid the big plays that followed. The first play was a short pass to Hill. Taron Johnson, Tremaine Edmunds, and Matt Milano gave the scariest player on the field a 15-yard cushion. Romo basically freaked out on the broadcast and circled all three players. The play call couldn’t have been worse." "Hill caught the ball at the 30 and wasn’t touched until he got to the 40-yard line. That’s 15 yards the Bills just gave to him, knowing the Chiefs had to operate their offense as quickly as possible after the snap. He was tackled after 19 total yards, setting up arguably the most perplexing play of the drive. McDermott said he used the second timeout for the same reason he used the first: To get information about how the Chiefs would line up. Travis Kelce was lined up next to left tackle Orlando Brown. Milano and Wallace gave him about an 8-yard cushion this time. Nobody touched Kelce coming off the line and he split the defenders on a seam route, and Mahomes delivered the biggest throw of the game. It went all the way down to the Bills’ 31-yard line." (lol--2 timeouts to see "how they would line up", two massive plays given up after McD's idiotic assessment of how the Chiefs "lined up"--but, yeah, it was the ST coach that blew that game!) Throw in Frazier's "year off" to rest, McD on his 4th OC, 3rd ST coordinator.....

Which college players are you most interested in (in 2024)

You literally list bolton but not Milano or Edmunds both pro bowlers we drafted... Ed Oliver is a stud .. taron Johnson is a top 5-7 nickel .. Spencer Brown is about to break out ... Gregg Rousseau is young and huge

If you count Edmunds and AJ as “misses”, you need some better perspective, IMO. The Bishop injury is a bummer, but he’s still learning. I won’t pretend to tell you about his college tape. I saw a few highlights, like most people. I will say that if they felt strongly enough to take him that high, I’m optimistic. Now coach him up!
-
I've never agreed with this point. Yes, we didn't exactly hit with Edmunds, but he also got 50M guaranteed. Elam looks like a miss though there's still time. Ford and Bashum were misses. Kincaid and O'Cyrus look like hits. Cook was a hit. Josh was a home run. Trading for Diggs was at least a double. Oliver and Rousseau were hits even some around these parts have expressed disappointment. AJ looked like a miss but he keeps getting better and now he's a re-signed starter on a good deal. That's a hit. By my count, that's 9/12 in the first two rounds if we write off Elam and including the Diggs trade. Or you could be overly harsh and include Edmunds and AJ as misses, in which case it's still 7/12. It's too early to say either way on Coleman or Bishop. I'm betting most teams aren't hitting those percentages.

First off, as you say, way too soon is not strong enough of a statement. Ask in two years at least. I like the late picks too and I agreed all year we needed them badly (so many wanted to trade up for one WR but they were only half right, we needed both for sure.) Second, how do you know for sure we will have plenty of FA money? I have been wondering about that all summer… We still have Von’s contract and now TJ’s and Dawkins’. The last two have to be healthy going into next season or that will crush us perhaps. I don’t know about next year’s FAs either, how many new contracts are due? We will let Spencer Brown go, no biggie, but anyone else? I’m really hoping for a return to excellence next season but things have to happen this season first. TJ is coming up on the age where small players playing big start to fall apart. He has to somehow remain healthy. Dawkins too but we are at least developing some tackle talent I think, but either way, if Dawkins is a no go his contract will be a weight around our neck. Beane has to have drafted much better between the 2022 - 2024 drafts than the Edmunds pick - 2021 (a long time for meh, about a C+ grade overall.) Then we need that plenty of FA money you are talking about and then we have to nail another draft using those extra picks we you have been talking about: WR, DE, CB, S, DT, S, WR…. We need some very sound players and a couple great ones…. Beane’s tremendous picks so far: Allen. Great picks: TJ, Gabe…. Then it falls to good picks….Ed, Groot, etc…. then meh…with a few stinkers…. C+……

So there are only 5 impact QBs in the NFL? Only 5 impact RBs? Good thing we have a RB that finished 3rd in yards from scrimmage in the NFL. What about DT? Oliver finished 4th in sacks, or can there by 10 DTs since teams usually play 2. Do we have to wait for PFF or ESPN to tell us their top 5 or can we think for ourselves? I’m sorry for being a little sarcastic, but these definitions that are being proposed are way too limiting or too subjective or too media driven. They don’t account for emerging or young players that are beginning to make huge impacts for their teams or players that don’t get media accolades or positions that are stacked with talent. For example ESPN’s top 100 didn’t list T Johnson. Isn’t he acknowledged as the best slot corner in the NFL? What about Cook? Last year was a breakout campaign. Does he have to replicate that season again to be anointed as an impact player or can we all agree that he was one of the top 5 backs in the NFL last year and hope we get a repeat performance this season. Oliver and Dawkins are two of the most underrated players in the NFL. Who cares that the media rarely sings their praises. They are indispensable to the Bills. Would you trade Benard for Edmunds? Yeah, didn’t think so! He was 12th in tackles but isn’t an impact player because we stop counting at the top 10? So how about Diggs? Is he still an impact player? He is the only receiver to catch 1000+ the last 5 years but he was outplayed by Shakir in the 2nd half of the season on 1/3rd of the targets.

Combination of a few things: #1 Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs They have been to the Super Bowl 4 out of the 5 seasons. The Bengals got past them in 2021. The Bills SHOULD have beaten them that season as well. Whether it’s Tennessee, Buffalo, Cincy or Baltimore KC continues to be a really tough opponent in the post season. #2 Very very bad injury luck 2021 was All Pro Tre White 2022 saw “difference maker” Von Miller go down and other injuries late in the year 2023 saw Milano, Jones, and Tre out of most of the season. Then you had multiple injuries to positions of weak depth at WR and LB. Both which bit them in the ass. Yes, all teams face injuries. It’s part of the game. But having their best players face long term injuries is just horrible luck. #3 Anyone not named Josh Allen hasn’t stepped up. This includes Sean McDermott though it’s not all on him. Too many of the teams superstars are invisible at times when they are needed the most. This had nothing to do with coaching and more about stepping up. Players like Ed Oliver, Tremaine Edmunds, Stefon Diggs, etc.. where are these guys in big football games? So between KC being a dynasty, bad luck, and just failure the team is where it is

Every GM in the league has more misses than hits if you're talking a 7 round draft. The only non-starter that has been drafted in the 1st in this regime is Elam. Oliver, Allen, Kincaid, Edmunds (Bears), Rousseau, White (Rams)
-
Josh is the best QB in the playoffs even better than Mahomes. The problem is NO ONE other than Josh and Tauron Johnson show up in the playoffs, especially our D. That’s why we haven’t made the SB yet. Ed Oliver is MIA, Milano is either hurt or toasted, White didn’t show the past few years. Edmunds - hahaha. Von was never Von in the post season. Groot always fighting some injury. Diggs dropping perfect passes. Last year we had LBs who were retired in FLA trying to cover Kelce while Douglas was on one leg. KC’s defense makes plays in the playoffs and Mahomes does enough to win. That’s it. Our playoff defense is a joke.

Ahh the end of summer. Cooler nights, days a little shorter, pre-season games done, and TBD fans losing their SHT over the release of CB6 or RB5. Love it! Hardy was drafted as a returner, that came from McDs mouth. He was meh at best. McD doesn’t like bad decisions and Hardy made a bunch the first 2 games. Also, McD is a DB whisperer. You can question a lot about McD, you can’t question his judgement or coaching of DBs. Yeah, Hardy looked like he had some potential on the outside when he was projected as a slot. He wasn’t close to unseating Lewis or Ingram on the depth chart. Cordington has much better tape as a returner, that’s why he’s here. I suspect Hardy will make the practice squad as we tend to over value our bottom of the roster players and many teams do the same with theirs. Toohill is the 53rd man on the roster and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone in the next couple days as we make moves. Evans was the better RB for our offense than Gore Jr which is why they put him on IR to stash him. Gore Jr will not get picked up on waivers and probably end up on our PS. Andreesen is a great story and I think he’s got real potential. He showed more natural instincts than Edmunds did in 5 years. He will be a special teams demon to give him time to develop as a LB. Hope he makes a true Buffalo story for us. Where are all the people who said MVS was getting cut?? He was a roster lock the day he was signed. They will keep him inactive or quiet until mid season. Beane wants to unleash him to make or get through the playoffs since so many of our players disappear come crunch time. Milano being designated to return is a good indicator he may be back for the final push / playoffs.

Marino is a mixed bag. He was convinced the Bills would re-sign Edmunds, hated the Terrell Bernard pick, and even hated the Dorian Williams pick. Not sure I'd lock it in on whatever he says.

CeeDee Lamb gets paid: 4 year $136M extension
DrPJax replied to BarleyNY's topic in The Stadium Wall
Lamb may not be “ the reason “ they flop in the playoffs , but what has he done to propel them on exactly , not much or if he was that dominant they wouldn’t be failing every year. I do see your point but I think you’re missing mine ,, belichicks , and possibly the only argument beane can fallback on,,,it’s not about superstars other than the qb position in a qb driven league . It’s incontrovertible that this is a qb driven league , or we wouldn’t be seeing KC looking to three peat despite their lack of star receivers. They have two other stars , kelce ( and it took until the playoffs for him to be impactful last year ) , and jones on defense. Most of their success is related to mahomes efficiency and Reid’s creativity , and they aren’t loaded with superstars , but like Belichick said , they plan to and do peak AS A TEAM in December and Janurary. They play well in all three phases including their kicking game ( another fact as we lost to them twice as our kicker was out performed by theirs). It’s hard to argue with BELICHICK ( 8 lombardies earned ) and another coach who has obviously had more success than any BUFFALO COACH , and that’s parcells. That’s who Belichick learned this philosophy from and was successful with , getting one of his lombardis at Buffalos expense in SB25 ( wide right!) It’s not about having superstars ( we should hope this is true as just like you stated , we don’t have stars yet on this roster other than the critical qb spot with Allen , and we might have one budding at the tight end position. BUT, we have had pro bowl players at safety , white, “ Edmund’s” , who were deemed by most on here as critical pieces to run Mcd’s scheme , and even they found out Beane had a cap for their perceived value ( so many argued on here that Edmund’s was a “ superstar “ with his supporters even threatening to fight if he was criticized ) , YET BEANE stayed true to his valuation of Edmund’s and bingo, guess who is in Chicago and not being paid HERE any outrageous sum?! Suddenly he was replaced by a more IMPACTFUL PLAYER, and all the fervor for Edmund calmed. Beanes drafting success is another topic, but he arguably has had chances to overpay , and other than free agents, he has been fairly consistent in setting limits. Jones has never been known for much restraint as a gm. So let’s see this year and next , when I believe their star LB’s contract is also due, if paying lamb that much actually results in some unusual ROI, like his best season to date associated w a SB appearance. In this one instance I am in agreement with Belichick; it’s not about superstars , it’s about which TEAM plays best in dec/ Jan, and I don’t think any NON QB touches the ball enough individually to be the noticeable difference that results in a bringing home a Lombardi. Let’s see if paying him like that helps bring home a title to Dallas; it’s just a difference in philosophy and I tend to agree with beane’s approach more; he just needs to add some more dependable talent for Josh to throw to fulfill his full potential, and not keep surrounding him with the majority of his receivers being guys that would be marginal starters on other clubs, like the two fins WRs last year. We don’t need 4 diggs types, and we also don’t need 4 Davis types. Beane hasn’t hit a good balance of talent regarding the wr corp for the majority of Allen’s 6-7 years here. -
CeeDee Lamb gets paid: 4 year $136M extension
DrPJax replied to BarleyNY's topic in The Stadium Wall
Jones has truly lost his mind and obviously is desperate. Let’s be frank, biologically his time to get another title is running out. If you want to see a very interesting talk about paying players , check out belichicks video just posted on YouTube on the macafee show which is 35 min long. It’s a great insight into contracts and how to look at the early season and even his analysis of this ridiculous dynamic kickoff situation. Belichicks insight on contracts and preseason evaluations is really interesting , like paying a db too much in Atlanta. He believed you prioritize your best player , usually your qb , and you can’t create problems by overpaying others who might have good stats , but perhaps aren’t really true game impacting players. IMO, the COWBOYS have done nothing special with CeeDee , and without researching it , I think he tends to play soft and can miss time and it’s very hard to justify he is worth 34 mil a year. Bill quoted parcells saying “ it’s not about who has the best team , it’s about which team is playing the best “ , referring to December and the playoffs. You don’t need superstars , you need a TEAM , playing its best football in DECEMBER AND JANUARY.. I think this type of contract is an indicator of why the boys have continued to fall short of expectations. Jones wants to find his” aikman , smith , Irvin “ past and I guess he thinks by just paying his qb/ wr like those HOF’s, they will somehow play up to that type of worth. It’s become laughable, but at the same time a kick in the nuts to fans who are asked to support ridiculous ticket increases / psl’s etc , as it’s obvious these owners now are capable of printing money and it seems limitless when more of these insane contracts like we are seeing keep popping up. Atlanta and Dallas look like they have lost touch with reality, compared to Beane ( outside of the miller debacle ), even despite things like paying Bass perhaps too early and the diggs questionable ROI, he at least seems to have an equitable pay structure in place and you don’t see many holdouts or contract squabbles affecting the franchise. Bill also stated how the first few weeks of the season mean very little as you don’t really even know your own team yet , and I think this is really going to come into play with the BILLS. It takes time to learn your players and team, and he stated the preseason itself means nothing regarding really evaluating a players value to the team , as it takes 3-4 weeks of evaluation when teams actually are game planning and trying to attack certain players. That’s when good players show up in those 5 weeks early in the season. It’s after those weeks when you see which teams / players are really prepared to play. It’s an interesting 35 min with Bill , title on YouTube is BILL BELICHICKS BRUTALLY HONEST ASSESSMENT OF THE KICKOFF, CEEDEE CONTRACT , and its cool to see him relaxed, not hooded , actually sharing honest thoughts for once as it’s such a contrast from his usual pressers. Again tho , imo , these contracts are ridiculous ( Bill pointed out the Atlanta db HASN’T had an Int in 2 years! Yes he has pbu’s , but to BILL, that’s not as impacting as int’s.). Remind you of anything like those who valued Edmund’s so much for pbu’s or he “ prevented teams “ from throwing in an area ; yet tfl’s , sacks, ints and tangible impact plays were not his strength. Anyhow , I’ve Hated the boys since sb 27/28 , so hoping this is another flop move by Jerry and the boys keep proving he has lost his football mind! For us , no need to panic early , just keep figuring it out and be the best team ( including the kicking game ) in late December and January just one time! Go Bills! -
Cuts, Waiver Claims & 90 man roster depth: A study
GunnerBill replied to GunnerBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Dawkins wasn't him. And yea, all pros. He has zero first team all pros out of the six drafts before this one. He has two second team all pros - Josh Allen (2020) and Taron Johnson (2023). I get the Bills are drafting late but actually there are multiple all pros that have come later in those classes. In six drafts I think I'd hope for more than two to put him in top end GM territory. And even pro bowlers... drafted by Beane.... it's Allen twice and then Edmunds once as original selections with Edmunds once more and Knox once as alternates. Those numvers have to tick up for me to say he is great. He is clearly good. He gets guys that can play, he doesn't have a ton of busts for 6 years of doing it and he creates depth right down the roster to the extent our cuts often make other squads. But it is the high end where Josh covers for some warts IMO.
