This may be difficult to understand but like some CBs are never thrown at Tremaine Edmunds PREVENTED a number of plays due to his size and amount of space he could cover allowing other players to make plays. Congratulations to Terrel Bernard with well deserved award without a dig on previous players.
-
less than two years of starting and he's already made more big plays than Tremaine Edmunds has in his career.

Benford, Bernard & Shakir…re-sign all of them?
Richard Noggin replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not sure if Shakir is the BEST slot WR in the NFL (Detroit has a dude who's effectively their WR1 from the slot, mostly), and DEF don't think Cook is a priority re-sign, despite how dang special he is at beating angles and stealing yards. Only Milano and Bernard have been truly special in this system. Much higher drafted dudes have failed to approach their impact (when healthy, of course). Edmunds, for example. I agree that Babich and Co. are elite developmental coaches, but Bernard is kinda special. Wouldn't fit as well into a 3-4/odd-man front scheme, but he's a playmaker and a leader already. His skills are transferrable. LOVE this compelling counterargument to the general consensus of Re-Sign At All Costs. Feels like McBeane will be less patient and cold than what you've proposed, as these players are pivotal, drafted and developed examples of everything McD values, but it's a smart call to more sober, calculated cap management. -
He's not even at his floor. This is clearly a joke. Williams has been a step or two late every read in pass coverage. He's like Edmunds but smaller. Edmunds made up for his slow reads and poor position with his size and athleticism. Williams just has athleticism. The chiefs picked on him. They couldn't run on us because our DL played strong. No credit to Williams though he did spy on Mahomes successfully a few times. No easy feat.

Remember how long people defended Edmunds like he needed 4 years to get it. You weren’t even allowed to criticize him almost. Then the literal next guy comes in and blows him out of the water in every way possible lol

Beane was so smart not keeping guys like Edmunds & Davis.

Benford, Bernard & Shakir…re-sign all of them?
colin replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
i think we keep drafting and if a pick is close enough or better, we stick with the pick and let the vet walk (which we did w edmunds which we did with tre, which we did w moss and singletary, which we did w that rt from the jets who brown replaced, and gabe davis). we goofed up resigning diggs for what we did (elite money, not elite performance, maybe age was the only tell), we goofed w knox (we didn't have anyone else) and we goofed with milano kinda sorta because he's hurt too much. sometimes you just have bad luck, mind you. i think shakir gets signed to top level slot money (i don't even know what that is, but i think it's close to what gabe davis signed for), banford is mcd's adopted son, so he gets top corner money, bernard is a couple injuries away from being a hard signing, but he could get the mkt equiv of what milano got (i figure about 20% or so higher given how the cap has grown). over time we are gonna let dawkins walk unless he stays cheap, cooper is likely gonna cost too much, knox is gonna go, and unless milano comes back, helps us win a chip, and balls out healthy next year, i think he's done too. douglas will go, and at least one other OL will go too. *music plays* it's the circle of liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiifeeeeeeeee -
Bernard isn’t the best run defender or tackler, but I’m not sure there’s a better pure coverage linebacker in the league. Also blitzes really well due to his body control and agility. He’s everything we wanted Edmunds to be, in a much smaller frame.
-
Edmunds was a horrible run stuffer and a disruptive force against the pass. And he was healthy. The ONLY reason he still isn't here is because the Bills knew his next contract was going to be a very expensive one so they drafted Bernard, who isn’t all that good against the run and excellent in pass defense.
-
I loved the Edmunds pick even if they gave up picks to get him. He should have been an All-Pro for years. I think almost everyone would agree Bernard in the 3rd round was a shock. His first game as a rookie was awful. Bernard is everything Edmunds was not. He's instinctual and makes plays. Edmunds almost never missed any time. Bernard has been injured two years in a row. A Bernard and Milano combo would be great if they get the pre-London Milano version. If he is a shell of himself then keep playing Williams.

One of my favourite Bills and (for me) second only to Allen as a case study of what happens when everything goes right for the Bills. Just a masterclass from scouting through drafting, development, and ascension to the leader of the defense. My money is on him as their best playmaker after Allen. He's delivered all of the splash I wanted/expected out of Edmunds and done it in a year and a half. I'm worried about his durability, otherwise he's everything I could ask for in an elite modern LB. He's smart, tough, quick, and has God-tier football GPS. Yes, the scheme is set to funnel him these opportunities but that's the point and he's actually converting. Some players are simply playmakers and like our quarterback, TB makes game changing highlights on the regular. As an aside, it seems we haven't really seen our best defenders (Bernard, Milano, Rousseau, Oliver, Benford, Johnson) play together for meaningful stretches. Much of that is Milano and the departed Tre White, but without making excuses it seems we've had a 1.5-2 year stretch where the defense was only ever 80% of what it really was. Maybe we can finally see what this unit is really capable of. Maybe I'm still drunk.

I'm so old.........How old are you? I remember Terrel Bernard as a depth player, on a good day. There was no way he could replace Tremaine Edmunds. It is nice to be wrong, very wrong.

Since I haven’t bothered to watching any Bears games, is anyone here able to give an honest assessment of Edmunds effectiveness with that team? FWiW, I thought he was a bust when all the apologists were excusing his age and whatnot. My perception was that he had poor instincts and wasn’t very tenacious. He was, however, really good at being the third man in on tackles. 🙄
-
He's a leader and definitely a field general. His instincts are worlds better than anything Tremaine pretended to do. His turnovers are constant. Thank God we didn't re- sign Edmunds.

There's no way Edmunds gets that 3rd down sack or makes that INT last night. Bernard is so fun to watch.

This dude is playing fantastic. I figured he needed his own thread. What difference to have a smart playmaking LB out there, and not 6'5" freak of nature who is only 18 years old and who loves to injure his own teammates more than opposing players. I can't wait for Milano and Bernard to man the middle together... And I am also happy it's not Edmunds out there. That's all I got

Potential Christian Benford Extension Framework
EmotionallyUnstable replied to JGMcD2's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’m guessing Shakir and Benford would be the priority, followed closely by Bernard and Cook in a distant fourth. I love Bernard but seeing them let Edmunds walk and prioritizing other positions early in the draft and FA make me feel like they think WR/CB are more important than LB, -
Kincaid update? (now declared OUT for Sunday)
Sierra Foothills replied to JMM's topic in The Stadium Wall
I think some of the disappointment regarding Kincaid is justified. He's hard to put in the right perspective. Historically for someone 26 games into his career, his numbers are pretty good but not great. And he did set a Bills rookie record for a TE last year. On the other hand those who are propping him up by saying he helps the Bills O dictate coverage remind me of when people used to say that Tremaine Edmunds helped the Bills D dictate coverage. Personally I'm a bit underwhelmed but I do wonder if it's how he's being utilized. Everything is a process and it's possible that the Bills learn how to utilize him better as time passes. It seems he's underneath too much and not enough downfield in the seams. Overall I would say that my biggest disappointment in Kincaid is him having just 4 TDs in 26 games. As far as availability for the Chiefs, tomorrow's injury report should give us an indication of whether he can play. -
Seahawks release Tyrel Dodson - UPDATE claimed by Dolphins
BADOLBILZ replied to Big Blitz's topic in The Stadium Wall
Yeah I'd like to see a return of that Bear front look in one or both of those 49ers/Rams games. As @GunnerBill noted that really suited Edmunds.....maybe my favorite game of his as a Bill.........and Dorian Williams might take to the role. -
When we drafted Bernard in the third 95% of his board said he's overdrafted His play as a rookie when he got on the field left a lot to be desired... He didn't look good when he saw the field So much so that in the off-season again 95% of this board did not feel comfortable with him as the starting middle linebacker... People thought that was our biggest question mark He did not look anything like a pro bowl linebacker in his snaps as a rookie... But that's because players get better with Repetition thank God.. as a back-up line backer even in practice you're doing scout teamwork mimicking the opposing teams defense , not perfecting your own But hindsight is 20/20 ... But 95% of this board was not comfortable with Bernard out the gate... The coaching staff was , this board was second guessing it... But it's because the coaching staff knows how to plug players into their system and get the most out of them.. Dodson looked good here... Our system is very linebacker friendly And Edmunds did go man to man over 30% of the time in his career here.. he would man up on running backs and occasional slot receivers when we disguised coverage I would much rather have Terrell Bernard , because his IQ is so high .. but Tremaine and Milano definitely played man coverage around 35%.. Milano would normally man up on tight ends , Tremaine would man up on running backs and occasional slot wide receivers in a bracket coverage... So he would only follow them if they cross face

To be elite yes that's the DLine. To be good that's the Mike and 2 safeties and corners who can play zone (with some man principles). This year the Bills have a fairly average DLine, and are tied for 12th in Defensive EPA, 14th in Pass EPA, and 9th in Rush EPA. You have the slowest secondary in the league, Taron Johnson missing about half the season, Matt Milano missing the entire season, Von Miller missing 4 games (and only semi-effective), DaQuon Jones falling off the cliff...that's almost all scheme, and that's also why Hamlin has like the 2nd highest participation rate on the roster. Edmunds struggled in man, while Bernard could do both zone (where Edmunds excels) and man effectively, which is why I don't think they wanted to spend the money on Edmunds. Bernard gave him a lot more versatility for disguising coverages. Everyone knows you're not leaving Edmunds in man no matter what you show pre-snap
