  1. For those of you that don't have ESPN Insider: 17. New York Jets (9-7) Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland: Heyward-Bey's awesome size-speed ratio should win out here and give the Jets the kind of receiver they need to open up the passing game. 18. Denver Broncos (from Chicago) (8-8) Everette Brown, DE, Florida State: Brown could make an immediate impact in the Broncos' defense because of his strong skill set. 19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7) Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State: Freeman is an interesting prospect because he throws a great ball and has imposing size at nearly 6-foot-6 and 245 pounds. However, his inconsistent play puts him in the boom-or-bust category. 20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas) (0-16) Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi: Oher is one of the more intriguing prospects in the draft. He's loaded with talent and can dominate the defense he's working against, but he also seems to have lapses in concentration when he struggles to keep his opponents at bay. 21. Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia: There isn't anything remotely close to the talent and depth at running back available in the draft last year, but Moreno is a good fit for the Eagles at this spot. 22. Minnesota Vikings (10-6) Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers: Britt has a ton of talent and is just beginning to scratch the surface of his potential. 23. New England Patriots (11-5) Donald Brown, RB, Connecticut: Brown could end up being one of the more productive rookie backs in 2009 because of his all-around skills and tremendous character. 24. Atlanta Falcons (11-5) Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State: Pettigrew remains the No. 1 tight end on the board and would be a help to young Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan. 25. Miami Dolphins (11-5) Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State: Jenkins has all the qualities you look for, with the exception of top-flight recovery speed, which is an obvious concern. Even so, he's too good an overall performer to pass up in the middle of the first round. 26. Baltimore Ravens (11-5) Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois: Davis is an impressive physical specimen, but he lacked consistency with the Illini, not always performing at the elite level you would expect from a player with his natural talent and ability. He'll be a gamble. 27. Indianapolis Colts (12-4) Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi: Jerry is a very underrated prospect, and would be a good fit in the Indianapolis scheme. 28. Philadelphia Eagles (from 12-4 CAR) (9-6-1) Eben Britton, OT, Arizona: Britton could be a good fit for the Eagles' offensive line, although I would have liked to see him return for his senior year. 29. New York Giants (12-4) Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina: Nicks won't wow you in a workout, but on game day he makes the tough catches and is the type of player who wants the ball thrown his way in clutch situations. 30. Tennessee Titans (13-3) Percy Harvin, WR, Florida: Harvin reminds me of the Reggie Bush we now see with the Saints. You can utilize Harvin in a number of ways, and, like Bush, he's a scoreboard-changer. However, he also carries the same durability concerns as Bush. 31. Arizona Cardinals (9-7) Larry English, LB, Northern Illinois: English set the all-time sack record at Northern Illinois, and could be an impact player in Arizona. 32. Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) Eric Wood, C, Louisville: Wood has been a player on the rise of late, and with his size and skills he could find himself a Steeler for a very long time. Second round 33. Detroit Lions: James Laurinaitis, LB, Ohio St. 34. New England Patriots (from KC) : Connor Barwin, DE/LB, Cincinnati 35. St. Louis Rams: Darius Butler, CB, Connecticut 36. Cleveland Browns: Clay Matthews, LB, USC 37. Seattle Seahawks: William Moore, S, Missouri 38. Cincinnati Bengals: Alex Mack, C, California 39. Jacksonville Jaguars: Brian Robiskie, WR, Ohio St. 40. Oakland Raiders: Phil Loadholt, OT, Oklahoma 41. Green Bay Packers: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut 42. Buffalo Bills: Jared Cook, TE, South Carolina 43. San Francisco 49ers: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest 44. Miami Dolphins (from Washington): Jarron Gilbert, DL, San Jose St. 45. New York Giants (from New Orleans): Shawn Nelson, TE, So. Mississippi 46. Houston Texans: Ziggy Hood, DT, Missouri 47. New England Patriots (from San Diego): Sean Smith, CB, Utah 48. Denver Broncos: Ron Brace, DT, Boston College 49. Chicago Bears: Mohamed Massaquoi, WR, Georgia 50. Cleveland Browns (from Tampa Bay): LeSean McCoy, RB, Pittsburgh 51. Dallas Cowboys: Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan 52. New York Jets: Andre Brown, RB, North Carolina St. 53. Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech 54. Minnesota Vikings: Max Unger, C, Oregon 55. Atlanta Falcons: Sherrod Martin, DB, Troy 56. Miami Dolphins: Clint Sintim, LB, Virginia 57. Baltimore Ravens: Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma 58. 2. Right. Since 1996 the Bills have drafted 16 O-linemen that I counted. Nine (9) in the sixth or seventh rounds. The Bills personnel guys are historically so bad at O-linemen, if I were Ralph, I would tell my daughter or whoever is making these picks to just: 1. Cut out the pictures of the top 10 O-linemen at each position from any highly rated scouting services publication. 2. Glue them to a wall. The same wall preferably. 3. Draw straws to see who gets to throw the dart. 4. If you miss the wall, you don't draft an O-lineman that round. 5. If a lineman you have glued to the wall is taken by another team, he comes off the wall. 6. If a lineman you hit with a dart is selected by the Bills, he comes off the wall. 7. If the draft is still going and you still have pictures on the wall, keep throwing darts. 8. If all the pictures come off the wall, and the draft is still on the television, you draft someone else, that's NOT a DB. 2006 - Buffalo Bills Rd Sel # Player Position School 5 143 Brad Butler T Virginia 7 216 Terrance Pennington T New Mexico 7 248 Aaron Merz G California 2005 - Buffalo Bills Rd Sel # Player Position School 4 122 Duke Preston C Illinois 6 197 Justin Geisinger G Vanderbilt 2004 - Buffalo Bills Rd Sel # Player Position School 7 207 Dylan McFarland T Montana 2003 - Buffalo Bills Rd Sel # Player Position School 5 151 Ben Sobieski G Iowa 2002 - Buffalo Bills Rd Sel # Player Position School 1 4 Mike Williams T Texas 7 215 Mike Pucillo G Auburn
  3. Agreed. I think the Bills will focus on both lines with their four of their first five picks, which really is a good thing. I could see the Bills take an OT or a DE at #11 and then the other of the two at #28. I see something like what follows below. Also, though, Buffalo has done some things on the OL already. The right side of the line is solid. Butler was probably our best OL last year, and Walker was a close second. That right side is solid. If they move Walker to left tackle, where he looked solid against a good pass rushing D in the Seattle game, then Bell could take over at RT, which would be a better fit for a physically gifted rookie. Hangartner is a very good C and was a starter for 15 games at the position with a solid Carolina OL. McKinney is a solid reserver, as is Kirk Chambers for the tackle positions. If Buffalo could draft a solid LT at #11, say Oher or Smith, and get either Alex Mack or Duke Robinson I think the OL would be in very good shape, particularly if we could then sign Kendall Simmons after the draft. I see Buffalo using their first four picks in one of two ways: 1a: Michael Oher/Andre Smith OT 1b: Robert Ayers/Michael Johnson DE 2: Duke Robinson/Alex Mack OG/C 3: Chase Coffman TE OR 1a: Everette Brown/Aaron Maybin DE 1b: Eben Britton/Williams Beatty OT 2: Duke Robinson/Alex Mack OG/C 3: Chase Coffman TE Either way we get very good players at the position where we have the most need. Our Starting OL would then look like this, depending on the draft scenarios. 1=Oher/Smith-Robinson/Mack/Hangartner-Hangartner/Mack-Butler-Walker 2=Walker-Robinson/Mack-Hangartner-Butler-Britton/Bell Neither one is bad, and both might be better than the one we had last year.

  5. Ok Im not going to get into this like crazy. But just looking at 2005 and 2006 I found the following players that were all starters at some point for this team last year. 05 round4 pick 122 Duke Preston 06 round4 pick 105 Ko Simpson 06 round5 pick 134 Kyle Williams 06 round5 pick 143 Brad Butler 06 round6 pick 178 Keith Ellison That was just 2 years on the Bills team that produced 5 guys that started at some point last year. So if you want to say IMPACT like Tom Brady then no. But who has been on the Bills since the Kelly era? The point is you never know with the draft what your going to get. You could get Mike Williams with the 4th overall, or a Tom Brady in the 6th round. All Im saying is that you dont know what were going to get for a few years after they have been in the league. Roscoe has already been here and proved nothing other than he can take a few punts for TD's. Is that really that big of a deal to have when we could use help in other areas? The FO is trying to improve this team. If they make it worse by loosing Roscoe so be it. But we know what we had with him. Hes no Tom Brady. And IMO anyone that is not named Payton Manning, Tom Brady is tradable for the right price.
  6. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As Per draftcountdown.com The following are rough player comparisons for some of the top 2009 NFL Draft prospects. Obviously this is a very subjective matter and there are no guarantees that these guys will be as good, better or worse than the players I compare them too. In other words there is nothing too scientific about this at all, just something fun to read and think about. 7. Well, I promised to do one, and here it is. Note that these picks are from the perspective of how I see the draft falling, not necessarily what I would do if I were the team on the clock. 1. Detroit Lions – Matthew Stafford - QB/Georgia – New QB = Culture change, which the Lions desperately need. 2. St. Louis Rams - Eugene Monroe - OT/Virginia – Rams need an athletic LT, Monroe is the most natural LT in the draft. 3. Kansas City Chiefs - Jason Smith - OT/Baylor – I just can’t get comfortable with the idea that the Chiefs will take an ILB at No. 3, so they get a franchise tackle to pair with Branden Albert. 4. Seattle Seahawks - Mark Sanchez - QB/USC – Sanchez’s value here is unquestioned, and Matt Hasselbeck is no spring chicken. 5. Cleveland Browns - Aaron Curry - LB/Wake Forest – A defensive playmaker for a head coach that loves them. 6. Cincinnati Bengals - Andre Smith - OT/Alabama – Bengals badly need an infusion of talent at OT, and they’re not the type of team concerned with Smith’s character issues. 7. Oakland Raiders - Derrius Heyward-Bey - WR/Maryland – Surprise pick of the top 10? We know Al Davis loves size and speed, and they don’t get any bigger and faster than DHB. Is this pick a reach? I don’t know, remember this is the same team that once spent the No. 17 overall pick on a kicker. 8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Michael Crabtree - WR/Texas Tech – Although the Jaguars really want to trade out of this spot, Crabtree is just too good to pass up. 9. Green Bay Packers - B.J. Raji - DT/Boston College – The Packers grab a big anchor to man the nose tackle spot in their new 3-4 look. 10. San Francisco 49ers - Michael Oher - OT/Ole Miss – Oher can step in at RT and provide the stout run blocking that San Francisco needs. 11. Buffalo Bills – Robert Ayers - DE/Tennessee – Not what I’d prefer (I’d rather take a LB and get a DE at 28), but the Bills need a pass rusher, and this regime always drafts for need. I just have a feeling that they’ll take Ayers, the fastest-rising DE prospect. 12. Denver Broncos - Tyson Jackson - DE/LSU – Denver is another team transitioning to the 3-4, and Jackson is perfectly suited to play the 5-technique role. 13. Washington Redskins - Brian Orakpo - DE/Texas – The Redskins need a pass rushing presence, and they’re said to like Orakpo quite a bit. 14. New Orleans Saints - Malcolm Jenkins - CB/Ohio State – Will Jenkins play FS or CB? Doesn’t matter, New Orleans could use either, and it’s his ball skills that they’re after. 15. Houston Texans - Clay Matthews - LB/USC – Match made in heaven. A coverage linebacker that can blitz, and who’s uncle had a Hall-of-Fame career in this very city. 16. San Diego Chargers - Brian Cushing - LB/USC – Without a dire need at any position, the Chargers could take a RB here, but A.J. Smith loves defensive playmakers and Cushing is a local boy that can play ILB in their 3-4. 17. New York Jets - Jeremy Maclin - WR/Missouri – I know the sexy pick is Freeman, but I’ve got a feeling that Rex Ryan is going to let Ratliff and Clemens battle it out for one year, so they instead stop Maclin’s precipitous slide. 18. Denver Broncos (f/ Chi) - Everette Brown - DE/Florida State – Having nabbed a stout DL at 12, they come back for their edge rusher with Brown. I don’t expect to see a QB in their draft class at all. 19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Josh Freeman - QB/Kansas State – They can’t be counting on Luke McCown or Byron Leftwich, so that means (in my mind) that they must be targeting Freeman. 20. Detroit Lions (f/ Dal) - Peria Jerry - DT/Ole Miss – Head coach Jim Schwartz grabs a penetrating DT that can play the Albert Haynesworth role for the Lions. 21. Philadelphia Eagles - Knowshon Moreno - RB/Georgia – With their need at OT addressed, the Eagles move on to getting some much-needed backfield help for Brian Westbrook. 22. Minnesota Vikings - Eben Britton - OT/Arizona – With the loss of Matt Birk, the Vikings appear set to move RT Ryan Cook back to his natural position of center. Britton makes sense here, as he’s the best tackle left on the board. 23. New England Patriots - Darius Butler - CB/Connecticut – Belichick loves do-it-all players, and Butler can cover, tackle, blitz, you name it. 24. Atlanta Falcons - Brandon Pettigrew - TE/Oklahoma State – Atlanta has some options here, as they could go either DE or LB, but I think Pettigrew is too good to pass up at No. 24. 25. Miami Dolphins - Aaron Maybin - DE/Penn State – I think the Maybin slide stops here, where Parcells would love to add a rush LB to pair with Joey Porter. 26. Baltimore Ravens - Hakeem Nicks - WR/North Carolina – Baltimore wants a big wide-out for Joe Flacco, and Nicks brings not only size, but polished route-running ability. 27. Indianapolis Colts – James Laurinaitis - LB/Ohio State – The Colts let starter Freddie Keiaho walk out the door, and are down to only 2 LBs with starting experience. Laurinaitis would give them some instant pop in their front 7. 28. Buffalo Bills (f/ Car via Phi) - William Beatty - OT/Connecticut – Regardless of how high Buffalo may be on Demetrius Bell, Langston Walker, or Kirk Chambers, it would be wise for them to add another talent to the mix at LT. 29. New York Giants - Kenny Britt - WR/Rutgers – This pick could belong to the Browns if the Braylon Edwards deal goes down, but either way, Britt is a steady WR with enough speed to warrant a round 1 selection. 30. Tennessee Titans - Percy Harvin - WR/Florida – His stock has dropped due to a positive drug test and some “where does he fit?” style questions, but Tennessee needs offensive playmakers and they won’t hesitate to take a chance on talent. 31. Arizona Cardinals - Chris Wells - RB/Ohio State – The Cardinals want to upgrade their running game, and a top-flight RB could do the trick. There’s a great chance that Donald Brown goes here, which would drop the heretofore highly touted Wells out of the draft’s opening round. 32. Pittsburgh Steelers – Vontae Davis - CB/Illinois – With Bryant McFadden defecting to Arizona, Pittsburgh will take the best player on the board and fill a need simultaneously. They could also look to move up in round 2 to get OT help. Round 2 33. Detroit Lions - Rey Maualuga - LB/USC 34. New England Patriots (f/ KC) - Larry English - DE/Northern Illinois 35. St. Louis Rams - Evander Hood - DT/Missouri 36. Cleveland Browns - Brian Robiskie - WR/Ohio State 37. Seattle Seahawks - Donald Brown - RB/Connecticut 38. Cincinnati Bengals - Jared Cook - TE/South Carolina 39. Jacksonville Jaguars - Max Unger - C/Oregon 40. Oakland Raiders - Phil Loadholdt - OT/Oklahoma 41. Green Bay Packers - Alphonso Smith - CB/Wake Forest 42. Buffalo Bills - Clint Sintim - LB/Virginia 43. San Francisco 49ers - LeSean McCoy - RB/Pittsburgh 44. Miami Dolphins (f/ Was) - Sean Smith - CB/Utah 45. New York Giants (f/ NO) - Louis Delmas - S/Western Michigan 46. Houston Texans - Alex Mack - C/California 47. New England Patriots (f/ SD) - Connor Barwin - DE/Cincinnati 48. Denver Broncos - Michael Johnson - DE/Georgia Tech 49. Chicago Bears - Mohammad Massaquoi - WR/Georgia 50. Cleveland Browns (f/ TB) - Shawn Nelson - TE/Southern Miss 51. Dallas Cowboys - D.J. Moore - CB/Vanderbilt 52. New York Jets - Jarron Gilbert - DE/San Jose State 53. Philadelphia Eagles - Marcus Freeman - LB/Ohio State 54. Minnesota Vikings - Will Moore - S/Missouri 55. Atlanta Falcons - Paul Kruger - DE/Utah 56. Miami Dolphins - Ron Brace - DT/Boston College 57. Baltimore Ravens - Jasper Brinkley - LB/South Carolina 58. New England Patriots - Andrew Levitre - OG/Oregon State 59. Carolina Panthers - Rashad Johnson - S/Alabama 60. New York Giants - Shonn Green - RB/Iowa 61. Indianapolis Colts - Brian Hartline - WR/Ohio State 62. Tennessee Titans - Pat White - QB/West Virginia 63. Arizona Cardinals - Eric Wood - C/Louisville 64. Pittsburgh Steelers - Duke Robinson - OG/Oklahoma I welcome your feedback, but at least be nice about how stoopid you may think I am, I did put several months of time, effort, and research into it.
  8. IIRC, McNally played up the Duke Robinson pick. Basically told the D&C that he could take sh-- and turn it into gold. Either he did give input, or the FO that year told him he was going to drink the Kool-Aid be supportive in the press of yet another draft where the biggest need was put off until Day 2. No matter which it is, this does not inspire confidence in the man. If he had any input into the selection of Mike 'Big kitty' Williams, how... why... would you want him touching the OL situation again? True, for Peters' case, JMac did seem to turn sh-- into gold. And, then, similar to that book "The Black Pearl", the impossibly lucky find shortly turned into a curse involving the greed of many. Also, I would venture to say that the job of scouting/talent evaluation and coaching are two different mistresses.
  9. Note that Keith Ellison came out of that draft in the 6th. So whether or not you like it, you have/had 4 starters and 7 players who are still on the team (9 if you include DiGiorgio and Neill who went undrafted that year). Reckon that most of them are role players, but scoring 7/9 (9/17 including undrafteds) is a decent draft, not stellar, but decent. Comparatively speaking in 2005 - they picked up Parish, Kevin Everett and Duke Preston (3/6) - not that great 2004 - Evans, Losman, Tim Anderson (3/6) - again not that great. 2003 - McGahee, Kelsay, Crowell, McGee, Aiken, Haggan (6/8) - better but I still ask why you draft McGahee when you have Travis Henry 2002 - Reed, Denney, Wire, Bannan (4/10) - Mike Williams biggest bust ever... And so on... I think 06 was better than each of those years.

  11. Now that we've chewed on, swallowed and regurgitated day one, what do we do now? There are 56 picks before we pick in the 4th round (#121) and some nice players still left. I know most of us are thinking LB and TE. D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt. Rashad Johnson, S, Alabama. Cornelius Ingram, TE, Florida . Lawrence Sidbury, DE, Richmond. 12. ...basing his opinion soley on NFL.com's combine video. I thought I should at least see what these guys look like before I go off on how bad they are, right? http://www.nfl.com/combine/videos/participants Oher - Moves like Lurch from the Munsters. His leg movement looked horrible. His possible knickname if the Bills take him and he sucks, Michael Oh-NO! Lawrence Sidbury - Guy looks like he has the frame and athleticism to play DE in the NFL, from his college production it seems like he was great playing at the lower college level. Orakpo - Looks like a linebacker, not a defensive end. Eric Wood - Looks like that never been kissed lady from Britian's got Talent. Urbik - Looks like a very good 3rd or 4th round NFL guard prospect for the Bills (one of those guys that starts for 10 years with the great Steelers or Giants lines). Maybin - Dude looks quick, real freakin' quick. He may not go through a tackle to get to the QB, but it look like he could get there none the less. Max Unger - I can't tell if he looks more like Paul Bunyan or a Mack Truck. Duke Robinson - Clumsy. Tyson Jackson - It's weird how this guy never gets mentioned for our pick. I know the "he doesn't fit our system" argument. But since when is it better to have a small guy like Orakpo or Brown than to have a guy that could play both end and DT. Is he really going to be that bad at making tackles on running plays his way? At least he could throw off the tackle's block and not get buried or eaten up like Orakpo and Brown would. Why is Jackson not a better option? Why does he not get mentioned here? Sorry, I don't get it. Ayers - Looks like a solid DE prospect. The lack of college stats scares me though. What gives? Is he one of those guys that only plays when he knows it's now or never? Did he just mature late as a player and person? Every single one of these DE prospects has a big 'ol question mark on their backs. Ziggy Hood - Hey McCargo, you're fired. Kruger - Looks like one of those guys that they say "has a high motor". We already have about 10 too many of those type of players. Larry English - If he had a neck he'd be 6'4". He be a great pick at #28. Conner Barwin - Looks like one of those guys they cast as the jock who bullies the nerds. Looks like he bullies RBs and QBs too. Jonathan Luigs - Are you serious? This guy looks like someone who sits on the couch and plays video games while eating dounts, not actually try to play the game itself. Phil Loadholt - Bit of a project? Nice size though. Cornelious Ingram - Sorry, but that dude looks more fluid and athletic than Pettigrew. I see no reason why he won't be as good or better than him. Britton - 1st round prospect? Sorry, don't see it. There will be guards in the 3rd just as good as him. William Beatty - #28 maybe. 2nd round yes. Not a fan of drafting guards in the first. Jared Cook - Freakish speed and leaping ability. Brandon who???? Kaluka Maiva - Looks like a starting NFL linebacker to me. Never heard of him before but he looked fast and athletic in the video. So if you think this was a stupid exercise, well...who was more stupid, me or the guy who read the entire thing only to feel the need to state what a waste of time it was to read it? Happy draft day everybody!
  13. ROUND 1 (1) Detroit Lions: QB Matthew Stafford, Georgia - The Lions have been throwing up smoke screens about Curry and OT Jason Smith. But they drafted Gosder Cherilus last year in round 1 and the bottom line is they HAVE to find a QB to build around. Dante Culpepper is not a long term solution. Is Stafford? I'm not convinced. But he will be given the chance anyway. (2) St. Louis Rams: OT Jason Smith, Baylor - The Rams have needs a plenty. They have been connected to Sanchez lately (possibly a ploy to get Snyder to trade up to this pick and overpay?). I'm not buying that one. Curry is a popular choice, but not the biggest need for them either. Crabtree might be an option to replace Holt. But my gut tells me that Spagnuolo wants to rebuild that OL to protect the fragile Bulger, and build the O around Steven Jackson. Barron has never lived up to expectations. So the last question becomes Monroe or Smith. I like Monroe, but apparently Smith has more upside in many people's eyes and has the edge in run blocking. (3) Kansas City Chiefs: DT B.J. Raji, Boston College - I'm not going to bother trying to hypothesize trades. It's impossible to predict them, and just screws up your draft. But I'm thinking KC would be a good candidate to move down a bit. They have many many needs, particularly on D. And While Curry would be an excellent pick, I'm not sure how much different he is from Derrick Johnson. There's no DB's worthy of this pick either. So with the 3-4 coming, and Raji cleared of any drug test issues, they grab the elite NT that is key to any 3-4. Dorsey becomes a very nice trade bait at worst, but more likely kicks outside and becomes a 3-4 end. ( a sleeper here might be Orakpo, in an upset having him taken before Curry. But the 3-4 also needs that rush OLB, and Curry isn't one.) (4) Seattle Seahawks: OLB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest - This is a tough pick. If there were elite DB's in this draft I'd say that they were a lock. But the Hawks really are deciding between Monroe, Curry, Crabtree and Sanchez. I don't think it'll be Sanchez. And while Crabtree is a possibility for sure, I think the signing of Housh makes them lean a different way. If they think Walter Jones still has some gas left in the tank, then they grab Curry as a "replacement" for Julian Peterson (though they aren't the same player really). If Jones is looking finished, then it's Monroe. (5) Cleveland Browns: WR Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech - All signs are pointing to Braylon Edwards being dealt on draft day. If that does happen, then Crabtree is the pick. Winslow is also gone and SOMEONE has to catch the ball. It's still an excellent pick at that. If Edwards doesn't get traded, then I'd possibly change this pick to Orakpo, as the Browns are in desperate need of a 3-4 pass rushing OLB. (6) Cincinnati Bengals: OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia - This is almost a no brainer. Stacy Andrews disappointed them on the right side, then left town. Levi Jones has been injured and when not, terrible. The line is awful, and though there are lots of terrible things about the Bengals, this pick fits one of the terrible spots better than the rest. Monroe is a high value pick here. Personally, I have him as the best OT in the draft. They can't afford to let the QB get hit 51 times again this year. (7) Oakland Raiders: WR Jeremy Maclin, Missouri - It's always impossible to predict what the heck Al Davis is gonna do. If Crabtree is here, he's the pick. But he's not. Orakpo was my first inclination, to help the DL which never had anyone with more than 5 sacks last year. But something tells me Maclin will be the guy. There is NO ONE to catch the ball from Russell. He's a gun with no bullets. Zach Miller (51) and Darren McFadden (29) led the team in receptions last year, so Davis reaches here to get a WR with speed. (8) Jacksonville Jaguars: CB Malcolm Jenkins, Ohio State - I had a really tough time with this pick. Why? because I honestly believe that if this is how the draft were to shake out then this is where Sanchez's fall would end. If teams trade up to get Sanchez higher than this at least. I don't believe the Jags really want to draft him, but rather that they would be moving down with either the Broncos or Redskins and grabbing someone down there. There just isn't someone worthy of the #8 at a position they need in my draft. They signed Torry Holt to help the WR's since they are unlikely to land Crabtree, and otherwise they could really use another CB to go with Mathis or a SS maybe. So they trade down to #12 or 13 if Sanchez is still there and maybe still get Jenkins. (9) Green Bay Packers: DE Tyson Jackson, LSU - I was tempted to go with Brown or Orakpo here. As the Packers are making the switch to a 3-4 and could use a rush OLB. But in the end I think they go with Jackson. He's the perfect fit to be their Richard Seymour 3-4 DE. They'll move Kampman to OLB and draft a rush OLB in round 2 probably. With no NT available here, Jackson makes the most sense as a great fit for the retooling to a 3-4. (10) San Francisco 49ers: QB Mark Sanchez, USC - If he were still there at this point, I think San Fran grabs him. Alex Smith has proven to be a bust, and Shaun Hill isn't the future. I think Denver or Washington will have traded up at this point and Sanchez won't be there. If that's the case than I think this pick becomes a bit of a surprise with OT Andre Smith coming off the board to play RT this year and then flip sides with Joe Staley next year. (11) Buffalo Bills: OT Michael Oher, Ole Miss - Until the Peters trade I thought the Bills were a lock to be looking for a DE here. And I still can't rule out Orakpo or Everett Brown (who i do NOT see as LB's). I am POSITIVE you will not be hearing OT Andre Brown's name here either. The Bills have been striving for good characters, and especially with that image blowing up in their faces the past few months, there's NO WAY they will draft Smith. So I'm thinking unless someone surprisingly falls (and I don't believe for a second Curry falls this far), I think it's DE or OT. And Oher is the right pick here. There's a good chance some of the several pass rush DE's will slip to the Bills second pick at #28, but less of a chance a top OT does (other than the aforementioned Andre Smith). Even if Eben Britton drops, I see him ONLY as a RT. And again the chances Beatty drops are slimmer. Meanwhile Oher is the 2nd rated OT on my board, with room to improve as well having only played OT for 3 years. He's a monster of a man, with a great punch that will improve as a run blocker as well. (12) Denver Broncos: OLB/DE Brian Orakpo, Texas - Things have gone badly for the Broncos in this mock. They had 3 big targets: Sanchez, Raji and Jackson. And all three are gone. With 2 1st rounders, A move up is very possible. I honestly think they are more interested in Raji and maybe even Jackson than they are Sanchez. They have Orton, who they will give a shot, but they don't have the pieces for the 3-4 they want to now run. So with the other 3 guys off the board they nab Orakpo, to play OLB and rush the QB in their 3-4. I personally think Orakpo is a 4-3DE, and isn't versatile enough to play OLB in the 3-4, but a lot of people do. (13) Washington Redskins: OT Andre Smith, Alabama - The other team who seems to really covet Sanchez and the one I think moves up at some point to get him. They'll then turn around and trade Campbell. However, if they do end up staying here and not getting Sanchez, then RT and DE are probably the picks. I would have normally let Andre Smith slide a long way due to his issues. But Dan Snyder loves the big names. And Andre is one. Samuels is getting up there and Smith will play RT until it's time to move over. Or he'll be a complete bust. Either way, the Skins pick him in this scenario, and quite possibly any scenario where he's on the board and Sanchez isn't. (14) New Orleans Saints: OLB Brian Cushing, USC - I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Beanie Wells go here. Reggie Bush has been injury prone ad inconsistent. I think New Orleans might also like Michael Jenkins had he dropped to play FS and possibly CB if Greer doesn't pan out as well as they hope (but he will), and Sharper being a short term fix at best. But Scott Shanle has not been great at OLB, and Cushing could step into that spot form Day 1 and give the saints a solid LB corps with Vilma and Fujita. (15) Houston Texans: OLB Clay Matthews, USC - It amazes me how Houston can keep adding pieces to their D but still can't seem to fill other holes. They have half a future perennial All-Pro D-Line already, but the other half isn't much help. They have 1 great MLB and a good CB in Robinson, but most other areas could stand improvements. I think, though they COULD reach for Vontae Davis, they will take Clay Matthews, who is a HUGE upgrade at SLB and gives them a fairly solid LB crops with Cato June on the weak side. (16) San Diego Chargers: OT Eben Britton, Arizona - A reach here? yeah, a bit. But there really aren't that many areas of need on the Chargers. While I agree with some of the mocks that they could go RB here, especially with there choice of them all, I don't think they do it in round 1 this year. Maybe next. Jeromey Clary however was terrible on the OL last year and a real liability. I see Britton as fairly polished coming out, but more of a true RT than an NFL LT. Luckily for the Chargers, that's exactly what they need. So a reach yes, but still a huge upgrade at one of their weaker spots. (17) New York Jets: QB Josh Freeman, Kansas State - The Jets need a QB. It's really that simple. I don't think Mangini will trade Quinn to help out the team who just fired him. So they grab Freeman and let him compete with Clemens for the starting role this year. They hope for a repeat of the Flacco situation from last year. (18) Denver Broncos: RB Chris "Beanie" Wells, Ohio State - SURPRISE! A Denver team drafting a RB in round 1. But they have about 5 RB's on the roster, none of whom are overly impressive. Meanwhile, Shanahan is gone, and Orton will need someone to take the pressure off. Wells is a great fit for their zone blocking scheme that will not be leaving with Shanahan. So McDaniels grabs him some RB. (19) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: DT Peria Jerry, Missippippi - I think the Bucs would really like to see Freeman drop to them. But since he doesn't, they take a DT they desperately need. Though if a good OLB prospect comes down to them like Matthews or Cushing they could go that way too, since they jettisoned longtime vet Derrick Brooks. With Monte Kiffin gone, I think the D is in for a major overhaul. (20) Detroit Lions: OT William Beatty, Connecticut - Stafford is going #1. And with that kind of investment, the Lions will HAVE to find a way to protect him. Cherilus is a RT it seems, So the Lions take a stab at adding a LT and finally getting their QB some protection. (21) Philadelphia Eagles: RB Knowshon Moreno, Georgia - Would have gone with Pettigrew here, after their interest in Tony Gonzalez, But if Moreno drops I think the value is too good for them to pass up. Westbrook is still a huge asset, but he is small and gets banged up if overplayed. 1-2 punches are all the rage these days, and with that OL they have now in Philly, they better have a good RB or 2 to utilize it. (22) Minnesota Vikings: DE/OLB Aaron Maybin, Penn State - The Vikings have a few needs they can't fill here. Most of all QB. They could also use a RT or S. But there's no value to be had here. So they upgrade their 1 weaker OLB spot and get good value as well. (23) New England Patriots: ILB Rey Maualuga, USC - The youth movement of the Pats LB corps continues. Bruschi is 36. and even though he's superhuman and an action hero, he will soon need to move on and save another planet. Good value for the Pats however, and they did ok with the last USC LB they too. (24) Atlanta Falcons: S Louis Delmas, Western Michigan - This Pick WAS Pettigrew up until last night. Not anymore. This pick COULD be a LB of some sort, as Michael Boley is gone and as of right now, Coy Wire is slotted in the SLB position. But the other weaker area for the Falcons is in the secondary, and they really could use a S to help there. (25) Miami Dolphins: CB Vontae Davis, Illinois - Parcells loves selecting LB's and CB's in round 1. And the Fins really need a CB. They be ecstatic if Davis falls to them at 25, and be all over it. (26) Baltimore Ravens: WR Darius Heyward-Bey, Maryland - Allegedly, Baltimore has found the asking price for Boldin too step and are no longer interested in trading for him. So they look to the draft to fill the WR need. Haward-Bey ran the fastest 40 time at 4.30 at the combine, and has been rising up the draft boards ever since. (27) Indianapolis Colts: WR Kenny Britt, Rutgers - The Marvin Harrison era is over in Indy. Anthony Gonzalez is more suited to play the slot, so the Colts need a #2 WR to go with Reggie Wayne and keep that vaunted passing offense firing. Britt is a playmaker, who could end up the best WR not named Crabtree in this draft. (28) Buffalo Bills: DE Everett Brown, Florida State - As I'm doing this draft, I'm really taking ti 1 pick at a time, and not considering who is going where and to whom. I'm just trying to look at the individual teams, the need and value that is there and making the pick. My point is, it is not at all by design that Ayers, Brown and Pettigrew are all there for the Bills at #28. Much like the real draft, sometimes team needs and wants just kind of have someone slide. My feeling is that, despite being very happy if this scenario came to pass, and as much as I think the Bills REALLY like Pettigrew, they would in this case go DE. The clearly KNOW they have to address the pass rush, and this is a good TE draft, that they could get someone in round 2 or 3 at that position. So If Ayers and Brown were still there at 28, it's between the 2 of them. I think that Brown is a DE in the 4-3 and not a 3-4 OLB. And although he needs to get a bit bigger before he will be able to hold up against the run, he has the frame for it. Meanwhile his pass rush is excellent, particularly his speed and first step. So Brown is my pick. (29) New York Giants: WR Hakeem Nicks, North Carolina - This pick is provided the Giants don't make a trade for Braylon Edwards or Boldin. They definitely are in the market for a WR to replace Burress. So Nicks is the pick here, and is good value as well. Pettigrew could be a possibility, but I think they like Boss enough to go WR here, and add a TE in later rounds. (30) Tennessee Titans: DE Robert Ayers, Tennessee - The Titans lost Albert Haynesworth, which was a major blow to their DL. His pass rush from the middle was key to many things they did. They will need to address DT at some point in this draft, but adding a pass rusher like Ayers to play opposite Kyle Vanden Bosch will help keep the pressure on opposing QB's. (31) Arizona Cardinals: TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State - The Cards need a RB and a few other things. But this becomes a value pick for them. They have a lot of instability surrounding the Boldin situation, and they have no real threat at the TE position. So they nab Pettigrew whom they never though would be available, in preparation of replacing at least part of Boldin's production if/when he is moved. (32) Pittsburgh Steelers: OL Max Unger, Oregon - The Steelers will def be looking OL here. And Unger gets the nod because his versatility gives them a better piece to rework the line overall. Round 2 (33) Detroit Lions: DE Larry English, Northern Illinois (34) New England Patriots: CB Alphonso Smith, Wake Forest (35) St. Louis Rams: WR Percy Harvin, Florida (36) Cleveland Browns: CB Darius Butler, Connecticut (37) Seattle Seahawks: S Rashad Johnson, Alabama (38) Cincinnati Bengals: C Alex Mack, California (39) Jacksonville Jaguars: ILB James Laurinitis, Ohio State (40) Oakland Raiders: DT Evander Hood, Missouri (41) Green Bay Packers: OLB Paul Kruger, Utah (42) Buffalo Bills: OLB Clint Sintim, Virignia Remaining Buffalo Bills Picks: Round 3 (75) OG Duke Robinson, Oklahoma Round 4 (110) TE Chase Coffman, Missouri Round 4 (121) S Chris Clemons, Clemson Round 5 (147) QB Brian Hoyer, Michigan State Round 6 (183) FB Tony Fiammetta, Syracuse Round 7 (220) OC A.Q. 16. I rarely post but I follow the Bills obsessively and frequently read posts in the forum. It seems the dominant tone is rose-colored glasses towards the moves of our organization, and abyssmally stupid underappreciation of anyone who leaves. I'd like to offer an objective analysis of our roster. The big picture is, as long as Dick Jauron is coach, we will not be a playoff-winning team. We may improve to 8-8 or, with luck, 9-7. I'd like to see fate hand us better, but there are more questions in lingering problems then there are answers. Offense: overview: fine at skill positions, weak in the o-line, sub-average at TE. Turk Schonert has shown little - the move to the no-huddle may help. I believe Edwards has the intelligence and weapons to pull it off, but will the line keep him upright? QB - to show I'm not a chronic pessamist, I'll say Trent Edwards is often underrated annd has much upside. Intelligent and accurate, if not great arm-strength. He wasn't the same after last year's concussion, but he'll be over that this year. Good touch on the short passes/check downs, but can he consistently find TO/Lee Evans deep? I think the question is, will there be time for those plays to develop. trent isn't our problem, though at best he is Chad Pennington. But Pennington isn't bad. The backups are not worth mentioning here. If we need them, we're already in trouble, though the run game might cover us. RB - this is a fine stable. I feel confident Jackson and Rhodes can carry us during Lynch's 3 game suspension, and when he returns the run game gets the power of beast mode. Great depth here - at times last year Lynch/Jackson were carrying our offense, no thanks to the poor o-line blocking. Rhodes has good experience with the no-huddle. WR - well, this is our team strength. The Lee Evans/TO combo is the best duo we've had since Moulds/Price or Reed/Lofton, and here we have finally solved the "missing second receiver" problem for Evans. Josh Reed was indispensible to our 3rd down package last year - proving his value as a third receiverr. Edwards is not comfortable without him. Having Parrish as a 4th receiver and guys like James Hardy and Jenkins/Johnson vying for the 5th position shows our depth. TE. once again, TE is an invisible position in the Bills offense. Fine will be expected to block on most plays, to offset the weakness of our O-line. Fine and Schouman are at best average TE's. For those expecting Shawn Nelson to add some punch here, you have ridiculous expectations. Nelson will not catch more than 10 passes all season, if he ever sees the field: three reasons - Bills baby their rookies, ignore their TE's, and Nelson really isn't NFL ready even on a team that agressively uses their young players. O line: Everyone who thinks we won't miss a Pro-Bowl left tackle, and we can replace him with a lumbering, 366 lb, average right tackle, line up here to have "I know nothing about Pro-Football" stamped on your forehead. I don't care how much peter's underachieved last year - he had the talent to do well, which Walker admittedly knows he cannot do (and people are claiming he is whining, when he simply recognizes he is being set up for failure). Here is a huge NFL secret: YOU NEED TO BE NIMBLE TO PLAY LEFT TACKLE _TEAMS HAVE THIS CRAZY NEW THING CALLED SPEED RUSHERS!" I weep to think about that. Lets add two rookies to the line, if they even start: I think they will have to, even though our organization prefers to coddle rookies. I like Wood and Levitre - and think they will make an excellent interior line in 3 years. The Dolphis can get a Pro-Bowl season out of a rookie LT because Spano expects it - old "go out there and do your best" jauron won't inspire these guys to step it up. At center we have the undersized Geoff Hangartner, because watching Duke Preston get pushed around by Wolfork, Ferguson and Jenkins wasn't enough - we went and found a guy 20 lbs lighter. Yes, he might be smarter and tougher than preston, and he played for a good running team in carolina, but I still don't think he can handle the BIg AFC east NT's. So the only guy on the line who is above-average is Butler, and he's not a pro-bowl guy. In summary: the whole offense gets buried here, and what we gain in having a TO and a more experienced Edwards, we lose in this motely collection. Hence the same offense we had last year. Defense: still undersized, strong IN Db's but still without a starting caliber SLB or a pass rush, we are doomed to witness the same type of defense as last year - average at best, exhausted by their own inability to get off the field on third and long. DL - if it starts upfront then we are in stall mode. Stroud had a strong season for us , given what he is surrounded with, and Kyle Williams overpreforms, so DT is solid, as well as having a quality backup in Spenser Johnson and the distant hope McCargo may someday get-in-gear. our DE's are the problem - Kelsey and Denney are overpaid at LE - although both play the run decently neither has a strong pass rush: kelsey is especially disappointing. At RE Schobel returns - this MAY change things but I doubt it will - Schobel was in decline before the injury, and the guy relies on speed. For those hoping aaron maybin will come to the rescue, please read what I have to say about Shawn nelson. To wit - the Bills have no plans on starting Maybin or giving him significant time, and if they did, he is also not NFL ready. Next year, maybe. This leaves some room For Chris Ellis, whom nobody talks about, but I bet Ellis gets more sacks than Maybin, and that together that adds to less than 5. Once again, we have little pass rush, and without that, few int's. LB I'd be happy with this unit if we had one more guy, because Posluzny is serviceable/dependable/good vs the run, if not flashy, and K. Mitchell actually made some plays for us last year, on a D that gave him little help. Keith Ellison should not be starting. I dread to watch him shoved downfield by a guard once again, practically propelled into the stands by a guy who outweighs him by 80 lbs. he is JUST TOOO SMALL! Its not rocket science. get a linebacker who goes 245-250 and put him on the strong side. That's why they call it - the strong side. You need beef over there. In terms of depth we've got some average guys here, in DiGiorgio and Thomas, and then a bunch of rookies and converted safeties. If we had anyone decent they'd unseat Ellison. So we have 2 starting linebackers on the Bills, same problem as last season. DB Leodis McKelvin has talent and should take a step forward - providing the one positive for our D. Greer was a good player but we have depth here and won't miss him. At the other corner McGee is above-average, and at nickle there is competition between Florence and Youboty and Corner, which means we've got great depth. At safety if some are disappointed that Donte Whitner, drafted 8th in the first round, is not Troy palamalu or Ed reed, Witner is solid/above average, a good cover man and against the run, just no big plays. If we weren't asking him to be an 8th linebacker to make up for our shrimpitude, perhaps he'd get some. Having Scott able to step into that position helps also. If we were more agressive with rookies we might be able to replace Ko "I'm worth millions" Simpson with Jarius Byrd, because our free-safety should have more int's. I don't think we lack talent in our backfield - I think they play in a passive scheme and have little help from our DL. Coaching: look at a picture of Dick Jauron. look at his sallow, grey, ghoolish face with the nervous smile, and tell me, tell me that that face alone isn't worth at least three losses a season. That is, at some point a player on the field who needs a big defensive stop or an outstanding catch turns to the sideline and looks, just looks at Dick jauron, and a little of his soul just dies. This is why we cannot win. Don't tell me coaches don't matter. You might as well tell me generals don't matter and armies should just manage themselves. Don't tell me pro players are grown men and don't need motivation. Pro Football players are incredibly gifted athletes with the morals and intelligence of ambulatory chunks of hamburger, who play a children's game for more money than they deserve and who are largely protected by coaches, managers, administrators, agents, sycophantic fans and family from the consequences of real life until they can no longer make millions: most are large children. they need direction. This is why Bill Bellicheck wins with INFERIOR TALENT. He tames them: he is the Simon Legree of the NFL. Peter King just said Dick Jauron is the nicest coach in the NFL. We are doomed. I know Marv was a nice guy but he was even smarter than Jauron and he was a tough old vet along with the Professorial credits. And marv was bested by Jimmy Johnson, a guy who plays with farm animals. No nice coaches!!!!! So, maybe TO and our offense explodes; maybe Schobel has 8-10 sacks and that helps Stroud a bit and leodis gets 5 plus int's and we do go deep into the playoffs but its more likely we see Dick jauron's sad grey face at press conferences telling us everyone's doing their best and each week they get better, as if its all just practice or if its a school for slow kids where everyone gets the same medal, first or last, despite that they are being paid millions. And we go 7-9 once again.
  17. This is just as personal as the my other pleasant list, no right or wrong answers.. These are local guys I HATED, buecause I thought they sucked, in one way or another(at least to me).. No coaches on this list:) 1) Marvin Barnes-- He destroyed everything he touched and the our NBA went away! 2) Joe Cribbs-- always whinning , talented but me first 3) Christian Laetner-- Yeah a hero at Nichols and Duke but as selfish as they come. 4)Richard Smelick(sp?).. Couldn't stand him.. Seemed like he was a -100 every year. and a wimp to boot 5)Joe Mesi-- Accomplished zero by beating stiffs 6)Alex Molginy-- all that talent all that B.S. 7)Miro Satan-- See above 8)Bills first round busts-- too many to mention..From patulski to M Williams 9) Elmore Smith-- The dummest player to ever play in the NBA 10)Norwood- nuff said!
  18. Shows how much you know. They have accredidation from the same folks and just got re-done this year that give accredidaton to : JMU ODU UVA VCU William and mary Duke UNC etc etc etc. Yup such a bad school that they meet the same accredidation as those top tier school. Where did you graduate from and who gave you your accredidation? BTW, Liberty is a good name. because there student have the liberty to practice religious beliefs. They can discuss both repub and dem candidates. They can actually have and are encoureaged to have religious clubs. Something that public schools that are supposed to the rights and freedoms of all students don't allow in a lot of cases because they want to restrict the liberty of the students.
  19. That's true about not paying for admission. You may not even have to pay to park, if you park on one of the surrounding streets. VA Rt.60(Richmond Rd) is a good bet for free parking. Walk past the William & Mary Campus, cross the street (carefully) the point where the W&M Campus meets Colonial Williamsburg is in the shape of a "V"-called "confusion corner" because of the potential accidents there, walk one block thru Merchant's Square (shopping), and you're there. Kids being Kids, walk the around the town and see if they're interested before you put your money down. You can walk up/down all the streets. The Building Attractions have Union Jack flags in front of them and you can't go in without an admission badge, but that's it. If, after checking the place out, you decide to purchase passes, you can do so at a little building called the Lumber House, on the Duke of Gloucester St. (the main street). No need to move your car, if you left it on the street. You may want to consider driving the Colonial Parkway. It's a very nice drive, kind of like the Canadian side of the Niagara River. It runs from Jamestown (admission) to Yorktown. Yorktown like Williamsburg is free to walk around, I think the Battlefield is free and the little town of Yorktown on the York River is free but full of over priced tourist items. There's a huge Outlet Mall on Rt 60 (Richmond Rd). VA Rt. 5 has several Plantations between I-295 & Williamsburg. If you go to Busch Gardens stay away on the weekends. Too crowded, long lines, especially for the Roller Coasters. Enjoy, there's a lot to see and do.
  20. Youtube is a great research tool. I started watching recasts of the 1980 Bills team and saw lots of similarities with the current team. Let's look at the defense. The Bills can have the rebirth of the Bermuda Triangle with Stroud, Mitchell and Poz. Smerlas, Nelson and Haslett were awesome. Let's hope this year's #58 is nothing like Isiah Robertson and more like Lucious Sanford. Sherman White and Ben Williams were serviceable DE's. Can Kelsay and Schobel be serviceable? The current DB's are better than the 80 class of Jeff Nixon, Charlie Romes, Steve Freeman, Mario Clark and Bill Simpson. Offensively, the 80's had a RB trio of Curtis Brown, Roland Hooks, and Joe Cribbs. A revamped offensive line with Will Grant, Conrad Dobler, Joe Devlin, Ken Jones and Reggie McKenzie. A plethora of TE's in Duke Ferguson, Reuben Gant and Mark Brammer who in my opinion didn't get enough pub. T.O and (General) Lee Evans are comparable if not better than Jerry Butler and Frank Lewis. Roscoe Parrish and Lou Piccone measurables were the same in stature and heart. Last but not least is the QB position. If Trent Edwards can have anywhere near the type of season Joe Ferguson had that year, we could be in for a good year. I say could because the X-factor in all of this is the coaching staff. The offense in during the 1980 season was a force to be reckoned with. If Dick Jauron and his staff can duplicate their production we can be playoff bound.
  21. Watched a lot of Gator football, unfortunately, but he reminds me of a Duke Williams and Featherstone hybrid.
  22. Pssst. Robert Foster. Will also make for a few lively threads here at TBD-TSW. 😁 * Duke Williams is already in an advanced management course for Canadian Tire. 🙁
