  1. I think as a defensive coach he's pretty solid. Head coach wise I think he falls into the Rex Ryan category. Boisterous blowhard that loves the headlines. I do like his shiny head though. Much better to look at than McDermott's dull dome. As far as coaches that may hold the Jets back...we can add ol Nate Hackett to that list. His playcalling makes Dorsey look like Andy Reid.
  2. Kelce had two 1,000 yard seasons before Mahomes. Tyreek Hill and Marquez Valdes-Scantling had the best yardage seasons of their career with a different QB throwing them the ball. It's a myth that great QBs can turn WRs into somebody they aren't. Of course a great QB will elevate their weapons' production simply because the QB's added production has to show up somewhere, but WRs are who they are regardless of who's throwing them the ball. For example Gabe Davis is a limited WR that only runs one type of route at a high level and has a bizarre catch technique that leads to more drops than average. He will always be that receiver whether Allen is throwing him the ball or Mahomes or Nate Peterman. And if you do a modicum of research you'll see that Allen has elevated all of his targets throughout his career too.
  3. I've said this before but at this point it would have to be an established extremely successful offensive head coach who's won or been to a Super Bowl recently. I can't think of any that were available. You could make the case for Sean Payton but he hasn't won one since 2009. If you're Pegula you'd look like an idiot if you fire a proven winner who hasn't quite broken through in the playoffs yet, hire the best next young offensive coordinator like Ben Johnson, and then realize he's not meant to be a head coach (Josh McDaniels, Nate Hackett, Adam Gase, Marty Mornhinweng, Mike McCoy, Cam Cameron, Norv Turner, etc..). Plus, it's not really fair to hire a first time head coach and have the fan base saying Super Bowl or bust their first year. Then there's always the fear that McDermott will turn around a franchise somewhere else and win a Super Bowl making you look like even more of an idiot. Don't think these thoughts aren't going through Pegula's head as he is human after all.
  4. According to the media - just pick any offensive coach in 2023. We don't count Nate Hackett, Adam Gase, Kevin Stefanski, Kliff Kingsbury and so on. And the media will always give you the insightful and helpful tip to "get someone who has shown they can develop a QB" because you didn't know that the QB mattered much in professional football.
  5. Really good write up, Thank you for doing this! I'm going to pick out a few points to respond to. First of all, I think there are several factors to consider you don't mention. One is coaching. HC: McDermott is starting to lose a number of the fans because of 13 seconds, Bungle vs. the Bengals, and now Diggsgate. The unknown question is, to what degree has he kept or lost the locker room? I think he has the well-earned loyalty of a number of vets. Overall, do guys still "Trust the Process" and does he still have their respect? How do the new faces take all this? Unknown to us fans. McDermott stood to lose the locker room at several previous points, for example, when he benched Tyrod Taylor for Nate Peterman. He kept it by being willing to stand up and say "I made a mistake". I think the players will actually respect McDermott for defending Diggs and saying that Diggs was given permission and untrue and unfair stuff is being said, and will pull together against pundits ripping into him. But who knows. DC: Are we better with McDermott as DC than Frazier? I'm going to be a Tolkien elf here and say "No and Yes". I think McDermott will be more aggressive and more willing to make changes during a game than Frazier was. And I think he'll be able to focus less on D during games than Frazier could. Last, are there "too many cooks" trying to guide the defense? Overall I'll say worse off, but the question is, will we get to a place where it counts and when we do, will we be better then? OC: Dorsey is the big unknown. Will he be better in his 2nd year? Most people have that potential in their 2nd year on the job. I think it took Daboll 3 years here to really click, though. We'll see. There's still the "too many cooks" question on offense, too, with Shula, Brady, and Dorsey all trying to work together, then Kelly Skipper in the mix somewhere. Another is team psychology. Is the team pissed off and ready to prove they've got it in 2023? Or are they scarred by the Bungle with the Bengals and 13 seconds? Beane has turned over about 1/3 of the 90 man roster, which is typical. He's moved on from 12 FA and cut Isaiah McKenzie. Has he moved on from the right guys? Time will tell. Now, to your post. I agree that overall the defense will likely be worse. The Eagles were 8th, the Chiefs 16th in PA on D. The Bengals were 17th, the Rams 15th. If we can manage to keep our D in the top half of the league and pull out all the stops against the best teams, we can be competitive. Remember in 2020 when we played for the Championship, we were 16th on points, 14th on yards. We can get where we want to go with a D that's just good, not great, provided we don't have key injuries. Linebacker - I don't think it's a sho-in that Edmunds is being replaced by Klein. I think they have hopes for Terrell Bernard in his 2nd season, and they also like Dodson. I think when the dust settles, Williams will turn out to be the best of the lot. Safety - I like what they did with safety. The aging Hyde and Poyer are backstopped with Damar (if he can come back all the way, he showed he can play) and Rapp, who played on a championship team. Another topic but tying it in here - for those who believe Frazier was driven out or kicked to the curb, I think Frazier knew after the Jan meetings, the Bills weren't going to have the player personnel to field a top-3 defense again this season. There was going to need to be MORE work put in and MORE adjustments to try for capable D without a strong MLB. I think Frazier looked at that and said "how am I gonna compete for a HC job when my D plummets from 1st or 2nd to 17th, when I couldn't get looks as the guy leading the #1 or #2 D?" and decided he needed to try a different approach. I think Keenum had a vet knowledge of defense that Kyle Allen can't match. Kyle Allen has been able to play at times, more recently than Keenum put up good play. What I don't know is if either Barkley or Kyle Allen can help to rein Josh in. I think they are both too much "off season friends and buddies" there. So can the coaches rein him in as necessary? I don't know. Overall I agree, "push". I like the changes the Bills made at WR. I feel Trent Sherfield has the potential to be as good on ST as Kumerow and a proven better actual WR. I think Shakir was showing signs he was starting to "get it" last season. IF he stays healthy, I think Hardy has a floor ~McKenzie and a ceiling to be more. At the risk of sounding weird, the real question at WR is in the TE room. Kincaid was actually drafted to be a slot type receiver. Can he return the offense to potency over the middle of the field? Can he fill at least part of the role Beasley used to fill? We Shall See. I like what Beane did with the roster, overall. Overall, I think at the end of the day, he can't resist putting more resources into D than O with all the late adds in FA on D, so I'm worried he hasn't done enough at WR. But, that is a position that depends upon interaction with the QB to be effective so I suppose you can't add too many mouths to feed. I really think the questionmarks for the Bills are mental and emotional, not football skill and ability. Are they still a hungry team? I thought they began to believe their own PR a bit at times last year and 2021 and were kind of coasting through the season to grab their chance in the playoffs. Has that been addressed? And perhaps most key, do the coaches still have the locker room?
  6. Did you bother reading my “very dumb take”, or did you just rush to respond? I’ll copy and paste a section… “Put Josh Allen with Lee Evans, Eric Moulds, Travis Henry, Pat Williams, Aaron Schobel, London Fletcher, Takeo Spikes, Nate Clements, Terrence McGee, Lawyer Milloy, etc.” Moulds was an All Pro (twice). Pat Williams too. Takeo Spikes too. Aaron Schobel too. Lawyer Milloy too. Clements was a Pro Bowler and DROY candidate. We had almost the exact same amount of All Pro’s on that drought team as we did on this current team. Know the difference? Josh Allen. We are better because of Josh Allen. The rest of the squad is not all that different from some (not all) of the drought teams.
  7. Pretty much. I posted this last week and I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Question: How much better are we right now than the drought-era teams? One could make the argument that this current roster (outside of Allen) is not much better than some of our playoff-drought teams. Put Josh Allen with Lee Evans, Eric Moulds, Travis Henry, Pat Williams, Aaron Schobel, London Fletcher, Takeo Spikes, Nate Clements, Terrence McGee, Lawyer Milloy, etc. I may even pick that squad to beat our current team. Or put Josh Allen with Fred Jackson, Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Kyle Williams, Prime Jerry Hughes, Mario Williams, Stephon Gilmore, Aaron Williams, Preston Brown, Darby, etc. That's a playoff squad. Even without Allen they were only 1 game out of the playoffs. Answer: I truly believe that without Allen, this team would be a 7-10 squad. Or maybe 8-9.
  8. Here's the logic. 1. While last year the Jets had horrible QB play their OL was just as big of a problem. I'm not even going to speculate if Rodgers downhill spiral continues this year. However getting him does nothing to help that OL that they largely ignored. They also did next to nothing to address TE and Hall will be back...but I don't think he'll be what he was this year. Next year he should be back to normal. 2. They brought in too many of Rodgers buddies. He showed last year almost a stubborn unwillingness to use his rookie WRs until way late in the season. He very well may be looking Lazard and Cobb's way on crucial plays rather than Wilson. And they got rid of Moore who is better than what they brought in. 3. Nate. Freaking. Hackett. This is going to be an issue. I absolutely LOVE when the media brings up that he was the OC in GB for both Rodgers recent MVP seasons. He wasn't calling the plays. We have seen for years what happens when Hackett is a play caller. 4. Expectations are too high. They brought in a 40 year old QB that showed serious signs of decline...and Saleh has the balls to stand in front of the NY/NJ media and crow about how they are top Super Bowl (not playoff) contenders now. Last year he kept saying he's 'keeping receipts" against the media. Bet they are keeping them against them. 5. Their schedule. Take a peek. Their first 8 games are their toughest stretch. It's very plausible they start 1-3. 3-5 is very possible. Are they playoff contenders? Sure. But that's not what they are being hyped as. There are many other things that factor in but the bottom line is a 40 year old QB that already showed signs of decline last year playing behind that OL and being run by Nate Hackett is a recipe for 7-10 or 8-9.
  9. I don't remember which specific analytic stat but as far as efficiency, I believe he was one of the worst. That was from Nate Geary on WGR.
  10. Jinx fears aside, remember: JP Losman. Kelly Holcomb. Trent Edwards. EJ Manuel. Kyle Orton. Thad Lewis. Jeff Tuel. Brian Brohm. Nate ***** Peterman. We deserve to have a superstar. And we got one. Suck it, KC.
  11. I don't think that's nearly as interesting of a story really..........we have already seen how the Bills responded to being a favorite the past two seasons. They have won their division and had the highest point differential in the NFL over those 2 regular seasons. Hasn't been enough to reach or win a SB.......but the range of outcomes is much broader with the Jets. They could win the division or they could be this years version of what the Broncos were last year. They even brought in Nate Hackett to help with the latter option.
  12. Interesting thought experiment. I may pick that squad to beat our current team. Or put Josh Allen with Fred Jackson, Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Kyle Williams, Prime Jerry Hughes, Mario Williams, Stephon Gilmore, Aaron Williams, Preston Brown, Darby, etc. Thats a playoff squad. Even without Allen they were only 1 game out of the playoffs. But whatever - Beane isn’t the first GM to ride the coat tails of one homerun pick.
  13. Going into the 2018 season with Nate Peterman and rookie Josh Allen. That was pathetic.
  14. I read it as you meant @dannylicker turns out Nate Geary is a giant douche, which we all knew anyway, who threw away the bit of credibility he had based on his part time employer. carry on
  15. My bad - apologies. Hope Nate’s not fking with us. Not sure why he would?
  16. Come on guys do some due diligence before posting this crap. That’s a fake Nate Geary account
  17. "If Nate Peterman can still have a job as a QB in this league...my options are open if the coaching thing doesn't work out, boys."
  18. There were some good players, though, especially on defense. Kyle Williams, Lee Evans, Jason Peters, London Fletcher. Terrence McGee and Nate Clements were good. Donte Whitner, despite the hate he gets because of where he was drafted, was a good player too. But we were in QB purgatory.
  19. coach salad is going to be fired after this year and nate is going to be promoted bc aaron is going to be fed up with his croutons by week 12 when they are desperately reaching for a playoff game.
  20. It takes MUCH more assuming to place the Jets above us. I don't have to assume anything to say the Bills are still the best team in the division - that's what we've been for 3 seasons now, and that's how it remains until a divisional rival actually dethrones us. Us being #1 is the assumed baseline until proven otherwise. To place the Jets above us, you have to assume a 40 year old QB coming off the worst season of his career, after an offseason where he openly admitted he already had one foot out the door, behind a suspect offensive line, is going to work out. You have to assume Nate Hackett is suddenly going to be able to call a competent offense with an over the hill QB. You have to assume Breece Hall will be the same player. Etc. Etc. I'm not confident the Bills are the best team in the conference, but until proven otherwise I am very comfortable saying they're the best team in the division.
  21. If he does, does Nate ever get another OC job in the NFL. I still wished Marrone had made him a QB coach and we signed an experienced OC. Week 4 Kids Game, Lions vs Bills is usually the case.
  22. Anyone listen to The Rockport Report draft recap pod from a couple weeks ago? Nate Geary was the guest and he was brutal in that particular episode Maybe he should refrain from putting down beers. Forever. His reasoning for Kincaid being a bad pick was Dorsey and his play calling last season + the fact that they ran less 12 personnel than any team in the league. If Dorsey is the problem with drafting Kincaid….. then Dorsey is the problem and won’t be around long anyway. It has nothing to do with Kincaid. Basically disregarding the fact that Kincaid will be used as the slot the majority of the time. Refuting the fact that bringing in OJ Howard last year (and guaranteeing him 3.1m) had anything to do with Dorsey wanting to implement more 12 personnel…. Even though the panthers ran the 2nd most 12 when in Carolina. It was a cringeworthy portion of pod on his end. But down the beers nate- you’re a lightweight
