8 mil for Iupati isn't looking so bad right now. They only save 3.8 mil with this move. Not enough to sign Browner and Spiller, who will cost about 9 or 10 mil in total.

Very good player still. This certainly shaping up to be just like all the other Bills offseasons.

Wood is a terrible run blocker. He's pretty average overall at C. Could definitely improve there. Why aren't we bringing in Wisneiski? The Bills know this though, they wanted to draft C Max Martin out of USC last year.

I would think the Bills would treat it as a one year contract, tear it up, and sign him to a new deal after next season. They are basically paying him alot of money to get him here, then after that big year is over they can get him signed on a new deal that makes sense for him and the Bills. If he threatened a holdout, the Bills would have leverage though as he'd be under contract.

Except those guys were not considered very good to begin with and it was widely reported that the Bills overpaid for them because no one wanted to come here. This is not the same. Dockery was the 4th or 5th best G available in free agency that year (not in the league, just of the guys available in free agency) and we gave him the 3rd highest G contract in the NFL. Walker was at least the the 3rd or 4th best RT on the market and the $5 mil/yr we gave him would still be top 10 RT money TODAY. And Dockery was only cut because he was soooo expensive. He immediately signed a $5 mil/yr deal with the Skins when he was cut. Walker too was effective, just overpaid. Then they moved him to LT to maybe justify his salary, where he couldn't play, and they cut him too. -
What's all this talk about a #2 receiver need?
BrooklynBills replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Easley is here for ST. He's not good. Hogan is ok and Goodwin is a question mark. They are all young too. It might be nice to get a veteran in here with that group. Ideally your depth chart would be: Watkins Woods XXXX Hogan Goodwin Plug, Crabtree or Harvin or Brandon Lloyd in at #3, you are looking pretty deep at that position. -

He's not dead wood. He is just expensive for what he brings. They could get creative. He wants to play 3 more years. They could meet each other half way and give him a fully guaranteed 1 extension at vet minimum. Turn this year's salary into a signing bonus to lower his overall cap hit. Tell him to get all the guarantees he needs to retire after this season or the next. They need to lower his cap hit. Jackson would have teams interested in him if he were released but no one would be giving him $3 mil this year. -

This. Moving him a year out from FA would probably mean he is not resigning here. Maybe they already know he isn't in the future plans. -

They are going to move Watkins around a lot more this year I would imagine. Last year, he was strictly an outside guy. Woods can play inside and out, too. Getting a bigger outside receiver would give them alot more flexibility with where they can line up Watkins. -

He has the 18th highest cap hit for a RB. Even if he was slotted as the #2 guy behind McCoy, he is massively overpaid. Even if you don't agree that Brown is equal to or better than Jackson, you can't argue that that you couldn't go out and find a better #2 back in FA who costs less. Does Jackson have anything left? Sure. Is he a top 20 back at this point in his career? Absolutely not. It is absolutely hilarious that nearly everyone on this board is ripping the McCoy trade arguing that you don't need to pay for a top tier RB, but has no problem grossly overpaying Fred Jackson this year. If you don't think he is overpaid or that it's wise to get out of the contract now when there is zero dead money on the cap so we can upgrade other positions, you are simply looking at his name and saying I want to keep this guy and there is no logical argument to have with you. -

And you don't understand the economics of the NFL. It's simple. You get older, you get more expensive, you get released and signed by another team. Every year there is an aging player still playing in the league where you go, "Huh, we did so and so sign with this team." -

Also, Jackson is on record that he wants to play 3 more years. Even if Bills keep him this year, he's going to probably play 2 years with another team. The Bills can handle this 3 ways. 1. Negotiate a pay cut, but guarantee his lower salary. 2. Keep him on his current deal and let him go into UFA next year as a 35 yo RB looking at vet minimum contract. 3. Release him before start of this year's FA period and let him make some money. -
