Edit: now confirmed rumor that Bills will release Cassel
BrooklynBills replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Cutting fred, Cassel, and Lawson saves us almost $10 mil off this year's cap that we can rollover into next year. That basically makes resigning Dareus and Bradham a wash. They need to really trim the fat off this roster moving forward if they want to keep our top talent. That means tough decisions on players that are underperforming on their contracts. This has not been a major issue before as we did not have so many talented players and we were never a team that would max out our cap. We are now a team that will spend money when it needs/wants to, which means you need to be maximizing your cap space. -
The cap rollover implications of cutting Matt Cassel's 4.75 mil are pretty intriguing. I have would have to think its being talked about.

Enough incoherence/whining from WGR re: EJ
BrooklynBills replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I listen often and it seems to me that the whole EJ rant that has happened recently was in direct response to the fact that nearly 50% of the callers after the Browns game were calling in saying they want to see EJ with the starters and they were getting their shows derailed somewhat with a lot of clamoring for EJ to "get a shot." It makes sense for them to not want to talk about this because EJ has become a non factor in the competition to be the starter and people just can't seem to come to grips with it. The interesting discussion is Cassel vs Tyrod. Not whether or not EJ makes the team or has been slighted in some way. As a listener, i don't want to hear about EJ Manuel. He is the 3rd QB in one of the worst QB situations in the NFL. So when they are saying "read the tea leaves," they are saying "please, its over with Manuel. Move on. Stop calling about EJ Manuel." -
Bills are prepared to pay him an average of around $14 million. They can franchise tag him the next two years and pay him roughly $10/11 mil the first year and $12/13 mil the next year. Granted that money is fully guaranteed, but I think if push came to shove, the Bills would simply tag him the next 2 years at under market value.

McCoy's extension essesntially put him on an 8 yr, 113.8 mil deal, because he was already owed money and bonuses for the 2014 season which the 95.2 mil extension added money onto. That is a 14.225 AAV. Dareus is set to make $8 mil this season. A 6 yr, 90 mil extension = 7 yrs, 98 mil. 14 AAV. They are close. If he wants Suh money, then I would guess the Bills will tag him after this year and then move on.
-
He signed a 7 year extension, but was still under contract to the Bucs for 2 more years i believe. I would also expect that "more than $90 million" means "less than $95.2 million." http://www.spotrac.com/research/nfl/contract-forecast-marcell-dareus-515/ This is a good read on what they should expect in a Dareus extension. $100 million. 6 years. Less guaranteed than mccoy and suh. Until the Bills offer $100 million, Dareus will not be signing.

Suh's cap number was due to become over $25 million because of the parameters of his rookie deal, which was part of the old CBA. I can't remember the specifics, but there were plenty of articles about it around pre-free agency time. The Bills have some leverage with the franchise tag, and Dareus is the kind of player the tag was made for. I think they'll get him done with a deal paying him as the 2nd/3rd highest paid DT, behind Suh and Watt(I know he's a DE, but he is close comparable). If the Bills balk at making him one of the highest paid DTs in football, I would expect a similar situation to what we went through with Byrd. And once a player gets it in their head that they are leaving, it's a lot harder to keep them.

EJ deserves time on the field with first team offense.
BrooklynBills replied to gsurdam's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I guess people are forgetting that the coaches see him everyday in practice. I doubt EJ gets cut or anything drastic like that, but he has not positioned himself in practice to see time with the 1st team offense. Taylor should absolutely start the next preseason game to see if he can follow up or improve on tonight's performance. Manuel and Cassel can now battle for the number 2 spot. Just because he's looked decent with scrubs against scrubs doesn't mean we need to waste another chance to evaluate Taylor in the number one spot again. -
He ranked 8th out of all LTs in 2013 according to PFF. Didn't Crack the top 10 last year. He is currently a middle of the road LT. He needs a big year at the position to get that $8 mil/yr. That is not average LT money. I'd be fine extending him around $7 mil/yr, but I wouldn't be penciling him in as our LT for the next 10 years. Get him extended, find/develop a better LT, move Glenn inside. He could be a top 5 G. He also might not be able to physically do the things they want their LT to be able to do.
-
Alot of people feel he could be an All Pro G. He was seen by most of the league as a guard coming out of college, rated as the 2nd best in the class behind DeCastro. He is a decent/good LT. He is not the athlete most teams want to have at LT. He could be a monster inside. The money difference for him if that's the case is neglible. IMO, he is looking for a deal similar to what Jared Veldheer signed with Arizona and the Eugene Monroe extension in Baltimore. Basically, between $30 and $40 million, averaging around 7 mil/yr cap hit. Honestly, I'd take Veldheer or Monroe over Glenn at LT at this point. IMO, he is not worth that type of deal based on his play thus far. He is no where near the pass blocker he needs to be to be lumped in with those guys. If he moves inside and dominates, he could easily clear $7 mil/yr. If he stays as an average LT, $7 mil/yr is his ceiling.

Fallout from possible Dareus extension
BrooklynBills replied to Bocephuz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I get the feeling that this could be Mario's last year with the Bills. They can cut him after this year and save almost 13 million off the cap. If Rex is so good at scheming pressure, they might look at having Hughes and Mario here as high dollar guys as a bad use of the cap. Obviously a restructure is also possible, but they save alot of cap space by just releasing him. -
Dareus Kyle Mario Hughes Bradham Brown Gilmore McKelvin Graham Aaron Williams Ronald Darby Starting 11. So not worried about D.
-
We will play alot of 3 safety looks so I don't think this will affect Duke Williams that much.

Their OL in 2013 was great, and much improved. They were the key to their offensive success that year. They also stayed very healthy throughout the year. Last season, they had slot of injuries and regressed.
