  1. Notable compensatory picks: Tom Brady (6th round) Brian Dawkins (2nd round) Larry Allen (2nd round) Hines Ward (3rd round) recent comp picks: Dak Prescott Kenneth Dixon Kyle Juszczyk Ricky Wagner Pernell McPhee It's not that teams should forego filling out their roster every offseason in order to gain comp picks every year, but that when you have the opportunity to get an extra 3rd round pick (which will be a lock with Gilmore's contract) you should work the system to get that pick. I still think the Bills are in a good position to get 2 comp picks next year for Woods and Gilmore(3rd and 4th rounder most likely). In the example of the Bills this year, how much is a 3rd round pick in next year's draft worth? Would you trade Ryan Davis and Vlad Ducasse for a 3rd and 4th round pick next year? I think you absolutely would. Secondly, with the new rule that these picks are now eligible for trade, these picks take on added value.
  2. It's a two step process: You receive comp picks if you lose more eligible UFAs vs. than you gain. It is pretty simple to determine what UFAs are eligible and which are not. THEN the round is determined based on contract and performance. If you are not at a net loss of UFAs, there is a process to determine compensation based on a quality of FAs. From overthecap.com: The formula will occasionally award one “net value” compensatory pick for a team if that team loses and gains an equal number of CFAs, but the value of the CFAs lost is considerably greater than the value of CFAs gained. Adam once observed that the difference needs to be at least 50%, and this is the difference that OTC’s program will currently use unless additional information suggests otherwise. Net value compensatory picks are always 7th round picks, and they are always placed in order immediately after the regular 7th round compensatory picks. If, after awarding both regular and net-value compensatory picks, there are less than 32 picks awarded, the formula will award “supplemental” compensatory picks to ensure that the total number of compensatory picks is always exactly 32. These supplemental picks are awarded in the order of what would be the eighth round of the draft, if an eighth round existed. If you sign more eligible UFAs than you lose, you do not receive any significant compensation. For example, if you lost two eligible players who signed the two highest contracts in NFL history and were All-Pros but signed 3 eligible bottom barrel UFAs, your likely compensation would be a 6th or 7th round pick.
  3. I'm not advocating taking John Ross at 10. Just that I think he has the best chance to be an impact player in the NFL. I don't want us to take a receiver at 10 at all.
  4. Not a top 10 pick. If we are dead seat on a receiver at 10, it better be John Ross. Top 10 is for your freak athletes. Not pedestrian talents. And everyone comparing his time to Evans and Benjamin needs to remember that those guys pay the game at 235-245 lbs. If Mike Williams adds any more bulk, he's going to be slower. Also Evans ran a sub 4.5 at his pro day.
  5. It's not that confusing actually. The amount of picks that you get the picks based on UFAs in vs. UFAs out and the quality of picks that you get is based on the perceived quality of players lost vs. players acquired. In your example, Felton does not count in the formula because he was allowed to opt out of his contract with Minnesota in exchange for taking a pay cut the year before; Harvin was released from the Jets; Carrington was signed after the draft; Connor was not on a 53 man roster to start the previous year; and Simms was claimed off off waivers - not signed as a UFA. UFAs as it pertains to bring eligible for compensation primarily means a player on an expiring contract only.
  6. Dont know why we wouldnt match and cut patrick lewis. Unless they really like lewis better, which is possible as he was pretty much hurt all year.
  7. Do we really have 20+ roster spots to fill though? I know we had a ton of FAs but alot of those guys were signed because we had a bunch of dudes go down with injury.
  8. We have lost 4 players already and are assuredly losing at least 3 more, maybe as many as 6 more. I think we are in good shape. They just brought in bodies for WR that don't count as UFAs signed also.
  9. Corey White and Jerome Felton are 2 more guys I'd expect to sign with other teams also.
  10. I think this is an interesting topic to keep watch of. I'd like to get the high end comp picks for Gilmore and Woods. Another factor in teams like NE and BAL always getting comp picks is that they consistently have UFAs that other teams want
  11. FAs signed : 5 FAs lost or locks to lose: 5 Gilmore Woods Goodwin McCray Brown FAs I'd be shocked if they weren't signed: 5 Hunter Tate Bryant Douzable Blanton
  12. Groy is 6'5 320. He absolutely could play RT in this offense especially if we are playing more zone.
  13. Was having a great year until he was hurt last year. Injuries are a concern with him for sure.
  14. What about Vincent Jackson on a short term deal? Or is he physically done?
  15. Wonder if Poyer is going to start
  16. Loving the business like approach this off-season
  17. Seems more likely that the Bills put a price tag on how much they were willing to pay these bottom tier QBs and told tyrod that we are paying a qb x-amount of dollars and if you want that qb to be you then restructure your contract. If not, bye.
  18. They also could use whatever contract Groy signs(since we can match it) as means to get Wood to restructure/take a pay cut. Wood is older and coming off another leg injury. I think the smarter play is to keep Groy and let Wood go.
  19. Still many good vet CBs out there: Alteraun Verner Morris Claiborne Brandon Carr Prince Amukarama
  20. Pure Talent wise, Aaron Williams is better than Hyde IMO. But Williams hasn't been the same player since the neck injury and he really hasn't shined since 2013 under Pettine. I thought he was less effective under Schwartz which is a similar D to what we will play going forward. Gilmore, on his worst day, is still a top 20 DB in the NFL. I don't think he is a top 5 CB in the NFL, but the Bills could have locked him up a long time ago for less. The debate shouldn't be about should we pay him $14/yr, but about why did they try to slow play his contract as it's cost was rising the closer he got to FA.
  21. Perfect guy for them. Better than Ryan or Butler or anyone they would be able to draft. Ryan is a ufa and wanted to get paid. He will cover other team's number 2 WRs 1-1 and they will double the #1s
