Don't count out Trent Edwards
Geno Smith's Arm replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sorry to drag this into the post, but since 1961, the Bills have only spent a 1st round pick on a quarterback TWICE! Jim Kelly and JP Losman. They have really only had one excellent QB (Joe Ferguson doesn't quite make the cut) in modern times. One was a Hall of Famer, the other was, well JP Losman. My point is, why are people so afraid of bringing in a top prospect? The Bills have only succeeded with 1st round pick (Kelly), and they have only been burned ONCE in 50 years! During which time they have mostly been searching for a quality QB! You gotta take the chance! -

Yes. One could point a finger of blame at the Bills in ten different directions and always be right, but they have had sub par quarterbacking, the key position to any team's success. There is a reason why none of the coaches with prior success wanted to come to Buffalo. Because they don't have a quarterback. If Peyton Manning or Tom Brady were the Bills QB , there would have been heavy competition for the head coaching position. Why? Because coaches know that it all starts with the QB. How come none of these guys have gone on to become even decent players elsewhere? -

WOW! You're asking me to choose between Brett Favre and Trent Edwards (or Trent Dilfer, or Brad Johnson, or Kelly Holcomb)? Brett Favre has won a Super Bowl, and has been the aknowledged leader of some excellent, and exciting (that's important) teams that have gone deep into the playoffs. He raises the level of play of all the players around him. Call it presence, charisma, leadership, I don't care (just PLEASE don't call it swagger!), but it IS important! He never missed a game in 19 seasons. He holds many of the all-time passing records (yeah, even interceptions). He is a first ballot Hall of Famer, whose career is woven into the folklore of NFL history, blahblahblah.... Brett Favre is truly the opposite of Trent Edwards. I can't even imagine how much better the Bills would have been if they would've had Favre as their QB for the last 19 seasons. You're out of your mind. -

Yes really. Balls. He is a prototypical BACKUP QB. Smart player. Keep it close to the vest, Kelly Holcomb Mk II. He was being pressured by the coaches to throw the ball downfield more, not be more trentative. He will catch on somewhere, like maybe a backup for the Detroit Lions. He has less charisma and leadership skills than the average NFL punter. Ryan Fitzpatrick, no great shakes, played with more urgency behind the same crappy line. His stats were about the same, but any unbiased observer could see that Fitz had more presence. I'm sure Trent will improve, but he is not the answer. Maybe in 5 years he will be the next Brad Johnson, but even that would be a stretch. -

Three Things About Trent That I Know To Be True 1. He lacks the balls to throw the football downfield. 2. He lacks the balls to throw into tight coverage. 3. He gets injured too often. -
What positions would you be drafting for?
Geno Smith's Arm replied to loyalbillsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Drafting by position is a big reason why the Bills have sucked for so long. It's my contention that half of the Bills drafting problems have been caused by drafting for position instead of best player, and the other half has been taking the wrong player at the position. They are always chasing, patching up one hole with a "hopeful", and a year later they have a new hole somewhere else that could have been filled the prior draft with a better prospect. Your 2nd and 3rd year guys often (or at least used to back when the Bills were good) make strides, and positions that seemed weak become solidified (Fred Jackson makes Marshawn Lynch somewhat of a wasted 1st pick). I realize you can't always count on that, but this approach will surely get a team into the playoffs a few times a decade. The most important thing is getting guys that end up being good at their position. The rest will work itself out. Obviously there are some exceptions (like if you're loaded at defensive back), but over the long haul, that's the way to go. You can fill needs with adequate free agents while building the overall talent level of the team. But then of course, if you haven't had a QB for 15 years..... -
Marv wasn't a good GM. I think he was hoping to slide into the Head Coaching job, but took the GM job and well, sucked! It's in the past (though the consequences still effect the team). I just want to see some improvement, because just about ANY fan could have made decisions as good (or as bad) as the last couple regimes. In the Basement: Cleveland, Detroit and Buffalo I can literally do as good a job as any of the GM's of these teams without anything but the "knowledge" I have acquired as a high school athlete, and a fan watching on TV.

Offensive line or QB with first pick?
Geno Smith's Arm replied to Clippers of Nfl's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't know enough about any of these guys. I would wait until they have been to the combine, and or tested by the scouts, interview, etc. I am not sure that ANY of them are worth a 1st rd. pick. The line can be improved at the same time. Read the prior posts" (Mine and Bobos). So who do you want, Billy Joe Hobert, Bruce Mathison, Gale Gilbert? I want Peyton Manning, John Elway, Jim Kelly, Ben Rothlesberger. Again, the Bills have only spent 2 1st picks on QB's. One was HOF, the other one sucked. I think I have posted enough on this. -
Offensive line or QB with first pick?
Geno Smith's Arm replied to Clippers of Nfl's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I claimed NEITHER! I claim that is the BEST way to go about it, regardless of the lull between first rounder winning the Super Bowl, the first round is where you are MOST LIKELY to find a good QB, or for that matter ANY position. (I know, you're gonna let us know that, "Actually, most of the best punters have been taken in the later rounds". Solid baby, S-O-L-I-D !). -

????! Wrong, it has worked for the majority of Super Bowl Winning teams (not to mention the greats that never won the Super Bowl....) -

Offensive line or QB with first pick?

C'mon. So we have to fluke our way to the top? (Not including Elway is a bit disingenuous) We need to raid supermarket aisles! Sure there are lots of failed 1st rounders, but you know about those guys, you don't hear about all the supermarket baggers that don't win a Super Bowl, or the failed 2nd,3rd, 4th,5th etc.rounders, there are just hundreds of them. As far as acquiring a guy, while I'm not opposed to it (who do you have in mind?), but it surely isn't better odds than drafting a first round QB. Again, many a QB has changed teams and become Todd Collins, or Billy Joe Hobert, you just don't hear the story. How many times have the Bills picked a QB in the first? At least recently I believe it's only Jim Kelly, and JP Lossman. So they missed ONCE! Just pick a $%#ing 1st rd. QB and develop him, why all the backdoor philosophies? -

Offensive line or QB with first pick?

Why can't they just get a QB, let him sit for a season, and develop the line while the guys sits? Then you have both things improving without killing a Quarterback. Much more time efficient. I don't think you know what your doing. You need a QB in development AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! It's gonna take some time anyway, and the line can come together in the meantime. -
Great article on Gailey from his tenure in Dallas
Geno Smith's Arm replied to jcblanco22's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Gailey will be fine if the Bills can finally get a good QB. With the right tools he can win, and I think he is capable of setting higher standards and expectations for the players (has any Bills coach ever set lower standards than Dick Jauron?). I'm much more concerned about the drafting of players. The scouting/drafting ihas been weak. They need to raise the overall team talent level AND get 2 guys capable of making big plays in the Front Seven on defense. -
Yeah, but if there is a worthy QB in this draft , get him in here. The line can be improved as he is developed, then you have a QB ready to go. If not it's "draft a lineman, play through the year as a lame duck with Fitzpatrick or whoever, then draft a QB, wait 2 or 3 years for that QB to develop, then it's playoffs in 2014! Get a QB in as soon as possible and get him going, and in the meantime improve the line. Much more time effective!
-
Why not get a QB in and have him sit and get prepared for a year, and improve the line (they drafted 2 guys last year that have done alright and will likely be better), and pick up a free agent, and possibly draft an OT with your 1st next year. I think the sooner you get a QB in the better. Next season is NOWHERE, an obvious a rebuilding year. And none of the QB's on the roster are going to take the team to the playoffs even with better line play, so improving the line for one of them won't reap much reward.

I posted this elsewhere, but no one seems to have considered this.... Some guy making a commercial concerning a divisive issue to debut during the Super Bowl is likely to have plans for more of these kinds of displays in the future. That would certainly be a distraction that no team would like. It would be even worse if he isn't a success on the field. And even worse if they wasted a high draft pick, and 3 or 4 seasons developing him in vain. And worse if he is being paid Jamarcus Russell money. And even worse if he was playing for a team that hasn't been to the playoffs ten years, and that has the black cloud of a relocation hanging over it. And even worserer if the the city is struggling through terrible economic times. And even more worserer...... (Have I left anything out?) I'm really just here to discuss how Tebow's actions might affect the Bills were they to draft him with their 1st round pick. Not abortion.

How about this???
Geno Smith's Arm replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My problem with the GM and HC hires is that these guys are OLD. It takes many hours, and lots of energy to compete with the likes of Bill Belicheat. That is why I didn't want Schottenheimer, or really Shanahan either. -
I agree, but my real point is that some guy making a commercial concerning a divisive issue to debut during the Super Bowl is likely to have plans for more of these kinds of displays in the future. I didn't imply that taking a stand on abortion is grandstanding and self-righteous. In fact, I don't care what his stand is on abortion. But, a football player making a commercial that will debut during the Super Bowl to express an opinion FOR OR AGAINST sets off an alarm in my mind. And if you are an overhyped football player that doesn't meet the expectations that you have been involved in creating, that kind of behavior will grate on people. If he ends up a failure in the NFL (after being selected with a high pick),it will surely annoy MANY of the fans of the team that picks him. You disagree with that? You don't think it would annoy people? Or you just get all riled up because abortion is the subject of the commercial? Switch it around, and imagine a player in his position coming out with a pro-choice commercial to be debuted during the Super Bowl. I have no interest in bickering about abortion with you over emails.
-
He has already revealed that aspect of his persona, and I can't imagine a religion-based anti-abortion commercial that would dish out anything else.
-
Because it reveals a grandstanding, self-righteousness. One that grates on me, and if Tebow isn't a successful QB in the NFL (like I, and many others expect) will grate on fans, and teammates as well. Especially if he is selected by the Bills, and presented as a, pardon the pun, "savior".
