I view taxes as paying our share towards the public good and maintaining our way of life. Our infrastructure, payed over the years through taxes, is a major factor in contributing to our ablity to deliver goods, work a distance away from our homes, and to travel. I don't want every road in the country to be a toll road. I also don't buy into the belief some have that the majority of people on public assistance or welfare prefer that way of life, but are there because of some unfortunate circumstances. Sure there's people that take advantage of the system, but I'd rather have that than the alternative of not helping those that really need it. Our society should have a public safety net. And the cost of public education should be shared by all. Sure it needs to be improved, and I think people that rent should pay some also, not just homeowners, but to not pay towards public education would result in a whole class of people who couldn't afford education and would never have a chance to compete. Those are some of my reasons why I don't mind paying taxes, and paying more as I make more, whether it be as a citizen, stockholder, or business owner.

I am not voting for McCain, but I have to respect him

Clinton set a high mark on domestic issues, so it would be easy for someone to not do as well as him. And on foreign policy he had the balls and sense to end the ethnic fighting in Kosovo by getting international support, and having a strategy that minimized the risk to our military while achieving success. -
The country is much more homogenous and integrated than when the EC was enacted. It currently has the effect of not counting the votes of the minority parties in many states, such as Republicans in NY or Democrats in Texas. Using a popular vote instead of the EC would mean that every single person that voted would have an effect on the result.

You give Bush too much credit. He's not a globalist, the people who he listened to for advice are globalists who thought they could advance their agenda with the point of a gun. Bush never had the intellectual curiousity about foreign affairs to learn and have the insight to reject the bad advice he followed. -
Still no access to Palin medical records
PastaJoe replied to PastaJoe's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You only need to forward your mortgage bills if McCain wins, since he's the one who wants the gov't to buy them up. Oil bills should go to Palin, since she has a socialist history of redistributing the wealth from the oil companies in Alaska to the residents. -
I went through a large plant shutdown 3 years ago after working there for 21 years, and my current company is having a slowdown and at the point of asking for voluntary layoffs, so I know what you're going through. You'll go through the range of emotions from anger to self doubt, and may have to swallow your pride and take jobs you're overqualified for (if they'll give you the chance) for alot less money that you're used to until the right job or at least a job related to your experience comes along. I'm a salaried employee and have an M.B.A., and spent a year working as a landscaper for a friend's business until I could find another I.T. job. To be honest, I preferred doing the physical landscaping work, but it wasn't steady work and had no benefits.

The person with the most correct/closest predictions will be the PPP Premier Political Prognosticator. 1. Who wins, and what is the electoral college vote total for each candidate? 2. How many total Senate seats do the Democrats have after the election? 3. Which tossup/leaning other way state will end up going for which candidate? Electoral map reference: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/ma...vs_mccain/#data My predictions: 1. Obama; 353-185 2. 57 Senate seats 3. North Carolina for Obama

Is Texas still part of the U.S.? I thought Bush ceded it to Mexico. English is the 3rd language there after Spanish and Slow Drawl.

At least it's consistant with who I supported, Hillary came in first followed by Chris Dodd.

About Congress' 9% Approval Rating
PastaJoe replied to molson_golden2002's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Well if Americans are so upset with the Democrat agenda in Congress that the Repubs have blocked, then we should expect the Repubs to make gains in the election. But if Americans want to give the Democrat agenda a better chance of passing, then we should see Democrat gains. -
McCain, Obama, and Biden have all given access to their records, yet Palin still hasn't. I wonder what's in her past that she doesn't want known. Something that might make her seem less conservative? LAKEWOOD, Ohio (CNN) – With less than 24 hours to go before the presidential election, Sarah Palin still has not released her medical records and there is no indication the campaign is planning to do so. Two weeks ago, Palin’s campaign told several reporters traveling with the campaign that a summary of the governor’s medical history would be made public before election day. Reporters were told that details on Palin’s medical background would be released early last week. Last Thursday, after that timeframe had passed, a campaign aide backed off the previous pledge, saying the campaign wasn’t sure when the information would be released. John McCain, Barack Obama and Joseph Biden have all provided details about their medical history. http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/

And why didn't they come through? Because they were blocked by Bush and the Repubs in Congress. Thus the importance of a fillibuster proof majority in the Senate. Probably won't happen, but it would be nice. -
Glad to see you used the present tense to emphasize that the current Republican administration is allowing this to happen, and the Republicans in Congress blocked the comprehensive immigration bill that McCain and the Democrats supported. You can't blame the Dems on this, it was the Repubs that left things as they are, and now McCain is against the same bill he supported.

Palin genius strikes again
PastaJoe replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
You really think so? I think she's already working on the base for the 2012 nomination, so we'll be seeing plenty of her in the future. -
