The Comey letter of course was a significant factor, as shown by the change in poll numbers after it was released. He completed the investigation into Clinton, he should have been allowed to do the same with Trump. Trump ended Comey's role in that prematurely, but private citizen Comey may be the one to take him down.

The FBI director was fired after the conclusion of an independent investigation that found he misappropriated funds, and was supported by Republicans in Congress. Trump could piss down your leg and you'd say it was a warm summer rain. Or more likely he'd hire someone to do it to you.

So a president can be impeached for lying about getting BJs, but not for firing the person leading an investigation against him or providing top level intelligence info to the Russians. As Yakov Smirnoff would say, "What a country!".

The FBI director can decide what the priorities are and where resources can be allocated. He could slow down the investigation or bring it to a premature end, and say in his judgement there wasn't enough evidence to justify continuing the investigation, as the Trump minions have been saying in interviews. And since most of it is classified, we wouldn't know if it was true or not. And unfortunately there may be too many Republicans in Congress who care more about passing their legislative agenda than our election process being compromised to press the issue. Thus the need for an independent investigation by someone who doesn't report to the Trump administration. I can only hope enough Republicans have the courage to stand up to Trump.

If it was done in January, it would have been justifiable to say he wanted a fresh start with a director who didn't impose himself into the election and had lost credibility on his impartiality. To do it now, when the reasons given to fire him were there in January, and after Trump praised Comey's actions days before the election, indicates that Trump is worried that the FBI is getting close on the Russian connection, and the Yates testimony must have rattled him and pursuaded him to act now. And if Obama had fired Comey, the Republicans would have been screaming about a coverup. This is the first time in history that an FBI director was fired by the administration they were actively investigating. When Clinton fired the FBI director, it was after an independent investigation found the director had misappropriated funds, and was supported by both Dems and Repubs.

Trump doesn't see it as disorganized, he's the proverbial Emperor without clothes, and those around him won't tell him the truth. So the gang who couldn't shoot straight keeps trying, oblivious to reality.

The reasoning is preposterous. They're saying it's because of how Comey mishandled going public with information on the Clinton email investigation. The same information that Trump continually pointed out in his speeches and tweets to gain an advantage. If that's the reason, he should have been fired on Jan. 20. It's just not credible. Obviously Trump is feeling the heat that the FBI is getting close to the truth on the Russia connection, and hopes to replace him with a puppet. Now it's time for Republicans in Congress to support a special prosecutor or independent council.
