  1. Me and the Mrs. are hosting a dinner party (about 16 adults and 7 kids). Its an annual event. I serve Filet Mignon, pan seared and finished in the oven with a lobster tail and drawn butter, mashed potatoes. The guests bring a side dish or appetizer or dessert plus a wine or champagne. Its always a fun night.

    Happy New Year!

The evacuation zones are only for those living really close to the water.

I live about 3 miles from the coast and we are beyond the furthest zone, meaning, we will never have to evacuate.

Living like this is ideal IMO; I would not want to be right on the beach or east of the intercostal anyway.

Nor would I want to live way out where it takes a half hour to get to the beach.

Naples is a nice but small area.  There are places all over where the OP can find some happiness without it costing a fortune.

In my area the property values are only going to keep going up; we are like NYC south now.

I live in West Broward County. What I could sell my house for I could probably retire, but I'm not sure where we could move to. The housing market is still on fire. I can't believe what people are paying. I don't understand how people can afford it....

I sold a 3 BR 2 Ba 2300 sqft on 1/2 an acre 25 minutes from the beach in 2004 for 375K. It's now valued at 750k by Zillow (so might sell higher since they added a pool). This house was 550k 3 years ago.

  3. My in-laws have their in-laws in Cape Coral which is southeast of Sarasota or North West of Naples. Too me that seems "affordable". The west coast is quieter there than the east coast and not as built up.

It always comes down to your budget and what you can put up with. As long as both of those are good its more than doable.

Also, as everyone "can work from anywhere" I'm not sure the mass exodus of the northeast will stop anytime soon. So I think real estate in the south will remain high for quite sometime. Just my 2 cents on this real estate market down here.

If you are real close to the water, there are evacuation zones. but those places usually cost a fortune.

If a townhome is an option you can easily save 100k vs single family.

Ha! Hawaii was the default location for my son’s honeymoon! Damn! The boy is two for two on the first responses. I think he’s doing pretty well for himself!

Did wine country, but decades ago. While my preference is somewhere new, it’s been so long and it was so great it’s a place I’d definitely do again.

    Which island(s) in Hawaii?

Napa County is a little more commercialized than it was on your 1st trip but Sonoma is still mostly farm country.

  5. Augie,

This is a great topic. This country is so vast in so many ways. I can't wait to see everyone's responses.

My vote, if you like wine, would be to spend 4 or 5 days in Napa and Sonoma County. world class wine, resorts and restaurants. We try to go every couple of years or so, but Covid has put a cramp into that plan. We love it!

Hawaii is on our to do list but each island is completely different plus not sure when that will happen.

We should start a scotch enthusiast thread here.

I love The Balvenie double wood for a single malt at that price point.  I like Speyside scotches in general.

The Balvenie seems to be quite popular, generally speaking.

    the Glen
I think my favorite "normally priced" scotch right now is Highland Park 12.

Most Balvenies are fantastic. I love their 14yr old Carribbean Cask. I like just about everything that is not "peaty".

There was a scotch thread about 6-9 months ago. I think it was about 3-5 pages many good suggestions in their.  see below:

My new favorite is the Glenlivet 14 Cognac cask. I can get in South Florida for $45  https://www.theglenlivet.com/en-US/the-collection/14-year-old

  7. Qwksilver was created for a couple of reason. 1) It has my last name in it, 2) I at one time liked the clothes, 3) With my last name it beats many of the other nicknames I've had over the years. I changed the spelling with a the W so there wouldn't be any copyright law issues.....😆

The photo of the 21 year old Balvenie is because I love me some Scotch and that one is perfect. Someone should start a post on our pictures....

I have James Connor on my fantasy team. And every week I refuse to believe he can sustain 2 TD's a game on 10 or so carries..

But he's a heat seeking missile for the end zone

    And he's a FA next year.....Just sayin

i actually think he would be a downgrade.  All our current backs are better than him.

He actually is a great example of a decent RB benefitting from a great Oline and well-defined role.  If you watched him last year at Pitt, he was totally lost out there.

Conner is not quite a bruiser at 6'1" 233lbs but bigger than both of our RBs. He seems to have very good hands. Steelers OL, like ours, has not been very good plus he was coming off a couple of injuries. I think we could kick the tires and I'd be ok with it. To me he's a bigger, better version of Moss.

  10. If we'd won Dane Jacks would have gotten a a game ball. Thought he "filled in" as well as he could.

I really think 2 and 10 are linked... The league has figured us out a little, and someone hasn't made the necessary adjustments.

Can Edmunds catch? Can we make him a TE. Not a slight to Knox as he is trending in the right direction.

Elderly Woman is one of my least favorite PJ songs but still happy its PJ and not the Dead. Are you a Hip fan? Maybe next year?

As a native WNYer who has now lived in SE FL for like 8 years, (and lots of other places too) I can't fathom anyone seriously considering a move BACK to WNY.

It's more like 6 months of "bad weather" depending on how you define bad.

Down here, every day is summer.  Not that it's perfect mind you!  I have tons of complaints about south FL living...

But no way could I endure the weather in a climate like WNY again.  No way.

I guess it depends on the individual.  Some people are much more sensitive to weather/climate/gray sky than others are!

I agree November through March is almost perfect.

I probably wouldn't be able to do the winters/cold and gray for 6 months. I could see us having a summer place in WNY, when we retire but my bank account says we're not ready for that yet.
