As a software engineer who deals with logic all day everyday, it makes no logical sense but if you think it does, more power to you.

Really great breakdown...they do Allen first for about 20-25 minutes and focus on his Aggressiveness, Elusiveness and Control with various plays broke down to show how those skills relate to the play. McCown is amazed at Allen's ability to process things mentally and do so under pressure calmly in a tough environment during stressful situations. Said Allen has become who he is because of the way he processes the game mentally, not because of his running ability and arm strength. Talks about how he would have taken easy throws in some situations where Allen pushes the ball deeper downfield.

I was under the impression that was the basis for the creating of the Pistol Formation...to make running more effective from the gun.
-
Running in general is more effective under center because the RB is moving forward as he gets the handoff versus standing still.
-
Maybe the Bills should utilize the pistol formation more to help the run game while in the gun? Gives the advantages of shotgun in passing and gives them the advantages of the single back formation under center(ACE formation) while running. https://www.shakinthesouthland.com/2010/4/14/1405240/pistol-formation-part-i-evolution FYI ShakinTheSouthland has some excellent overall articles talking about concepts and explanations of them.

Why is Daryl Williams Still a Free Agent?

Allen has progressed in his pocket awareness to a stunning degree from where he was as a rookie. He often times would move into the pressure or would try and escape to the wrong side and would drift backwards a lot trying to escape. Often led to a lot of long sacks, especially on 3rd down and I remember screaming more than once at the TV as he took one of them that moved us out of FG range, or ended up being a fumble when he got hit because he would try and stiff arm the guy while holding the ball behind him. He is very savvy in the pocket and forces guys into the blockers with movement at times, like he did in the endzone against KC on the 3rd and 13 strike to Davis...he basically moved outside to run the DE into his blocker and then ducked inside and threw a strike. It was like he was toying with the KC DE on that play and tricked him into doing exactly what he wanted. May not have the creativity in the pocket like Mahomes does or even Wilson at times still has(although he has been brutal at almost everything else), but he is very very good at moving around enough to get the throw off, avoid pressure or give himself escape lanes if need be. -
Well, if they know their RBs are better at gap scheme/pin and pull/wide zone runs to the edges then why do they keep trying to force the inside zone runs? I get they have to do some of that to keep defenses from keying on all outside edge runs, but they should be making those their bread and butter and sprinkle in the other inside zones. Play to your personnel's strengths, not their weaknesses.

I am not sure what RB would be fast enough when there is literally a guy in the backfield waiting for them every time they get the handoff just about in inside zone runs and sometimes multiple guys.

Coming from a high school and college DC, I would hope so!

It sucks that counts as a sack in the stats...it was such BS. Even with that counting, Allen has only been sacked 9 times in 6 games and his sack rate of 3.6% is the lowest of his career. His pressure rate of 12.5% is also the lowest of his career and tied with Brady for the lowest in the NFL this year. Bills are doing a masterful job at pass pro and at going max protect when needed to give him time(like on the TD to Davis last week against the Chiefs where they lined up Knox and Singletary on either side of him in the gun expecting a blitz) -
He got benched for a reason in DC
-
run blocking is adequate as long as they do pin and pull concepts.

Not surprised....it's just how we roll. Same thing you see when 3 or 4 random people help a stranger pull their car out of a snowy ditch in January even if it makes them late for work, just in a different setting. WNY looks out for each other, even if you aren't from here. -
Yeah, or leak the RB or WR in motion out the other side on a swing pass. A lot of the Bills RPO's are "free access" RPO's where Diggs has a guy playing off and he runs a 5 yard speed out.
-
Here is something I found that gives some insights into Pin and Pull technique...apparently it is something that is relatively new in it's usage and popularity... https://www.viqtorysports.com/pin-pull-what-is-it-and-how-is-it-run/ https://www.xandolabs.com/the-lab/offense/run-game/pin-and-pull-run-concepts/5-essential-principles-of-pin-and-pull-run-concepts/ Hmm...that isn't true apparently...the video I just posted says it IS RPO friendly, but to the backside of the play. https://insider.afca.com/xs-os-pin-and-pull-rpo/

It looks like the end player on the line, whether it's TE or OT crashes down hard on the DE there and then Morse and sometimes even the whole side of the line loops around that player. Why do you think they tried the inside zones again at the start of the year when Dorsey knew from being here last year we sucked at them? It was obvious the pin and pull concepts are much more effective with our blockers, especially with Morse out in space. However, also noticed the Chiefs seemed better at stopping those runs in the 2nd half...what was the adjustment on D they made? Also...why do you think the Bills are so bad on the inside zone plays? Is it because they physically are not good enough to run those type of plays or is it technique/execution that is causing it? I am assuming those inside zone plays require every player moving as a unit in sync more than other types of runs and just from what I am seeing, the Bills always seem to have one player who gets beat badly or doesn't do what they should have done allowing a defender in the backfield. Then playaction out of it...Allen hit Diggs for 31 last game out of one of those under center play actions and he was wide open.
-
Yes, they execute them much better and Dorsey should KNOW they execute them much better based on being here last year when we started running the ball effectively late in the year was when we switched from a zone scheme to a gap scheme. That's why I am wondering why they attempted to switch back. Did they think Kromer would be able to get them to be better at it? Did Dorsey feel he could get it working? Did they think Saffold could help them execute it better? I don't know what the reason was, but once again they trotted this out the first 4 weeks and once again they sucked at it, possibly even worse than last year.
-
Then they should stop lining up with tight formations and trying to go power because they are NOT good at it. Go spread and do some version of a pin and pull run and they will be far more successful at it. Why bring more people to the box when you struggle as it is with the normal number of defenders?
-
Not sure where you come from, but 4.7 yards a carry is pretty good where I come from. That's quite competent, IMO. The run game is not something we really are going to put a lot into. We are a passing team. It's OK. Really.
-
I think most of the pin and pull runs come with Allen under center, which then forces us to throw passes from under center to keep defenses from knowing it's an obvious run. However, I don't mind it as Allen is exceptional with play action out of those...among the best in the NFL metrics wise. They did do at least one pin and pull run out of shotgun last week that worked pretty well, so they can do it...
-
I'm wondering why they tried to go back to the inside zone scheme when they knew it was a weakness last year and they couldn't do it well. Is there some sort of advantage in terms of what they can do with it? Ie, more varied play calls, more options, etc?
-
Honestly I think they'd be fine. Perhaps not quite as good as with Singletary, but fine.
