Desperately drafting a QB in Rd1 just to do it means you end up with EJ Losman or JP Manuel. Draft a QB in Rd1 if the right one is there. Don't force it.
-
Yep and you don't take a 4pt lead in the last 4 minutes of the game and let Blake Bortles drive for a touchdown against the supposed "Best Defense" in the NFL.
-
That's True. No comparison. TO actually produced on the field.

Realistically, how does this all play out?

I wouldn't want Swartz as HC but I thought he did an excellent job as DC I know its a popular battle cry "Draft a QB every year until you find one". But honestly, it's stupid. If you invest a #1 pick on a QB, you have to take time to develop him. You can't really have more than 2 developmental QBs on your roster at any given time so you'd be churning through QBs before they got up to speed on an offense and started to show promise (add to that: Changing Head coaches, and/or OCs and QB coaches, plus roster turnover). It is not feasible to draft a QB every year. Once Whalley/Nix picked EJ they were tied to him for 2-3 year minimum. They compounded that by making the Sammy trade and wasting additional resources. And then you take into the consideration the death of Ralph Wilson, the pending sale and potential move of the team and the Marrone debacle and you can understand how the Bills are in a terrible situation with their QB. In a perfect world ownership would've been solid and the coaching staff and front office would've been on the same page regarding the development of EJ. EJ would've been the starter all of last year and a final decision would've been made on him. Instead, the jury was still out, they went after journeyman Cassel and wildcard Taylor. Maybe Taylor will pay off. Maybe not. If he doesn't they are still pretty much stuck. Do they try to acquire a stopgap QB or go all in to get a top Rookie QB? Right now it looks like its going to be another couple of ugly years for the Bills and their fans. -

LOL. Now EJ has a noodle arm? His problem is his slow decision making, not his arm. And Mallett has shown he is even worse in the smarts department -

Can you explain what would make him a better option than EJ? Neither of them has shown that they can play effectively at this level. But EJ has atleast handled himself with class and maturity. Mallett has done the exact opposite. -
You guys realize that any QB drafted will most likely not be a very good NFL player for 2-3 years (if ever)? Huge learning curve for QBs coming in to the NFL. I just don't believe this fan base has the patience to develop a QB. Any QB.

In my opinion, there is zero chance Rex is gone after 1 year. I think he's here for 3 yrs minimum. I expect them to hire the "football czar" that Pegula hoped he was getting in Polian. That guy will decide what happens with Whalley. It would not surprise me for Whalley to get fired or resign. I also expect a big roster changeover on defense in the offseason since the guys we have don't seem to be executing Rex's scheme well. -

Yep. I'd like to see the Bills use their players to do what they are good at. Not try to trick the other team by putting players in positions that aren't good at. I like Marv's old theory of doing what you are good at executing it well. That puts pressure on your opponent to stop you at your best. The old "I'll give you my playbook and still out execute you" -
What if 2 of the 4 TDs get called back on penalties like last week?

6-3 is right there for the taking!
Maddog69 replied to TheFunPolice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly. The Bills are not playing well enough for me to take any win for granted. They are just as likely to be 3-6 after these games. Not to mention the scary stat about Rex coached teams after a win. Following a victory, teams coached by Rex have a 2-17 record. Rex coached teams don't generally win a lot of games in a row. Past performance is no guarantee of failure, but it is a scary trend. I'm going to stay calm and take it week to week. The Bills are still battling a bunch of injuries to important players. This is as big a factor as anything else, in my opinion. -
A couple of lucky runs is not necessarily "carrying the team". Again, I'm not bashing TT. I like him. But I think EJ has shown some flashes too. In 16 starts, he's lead 4th qtr/OT game winning drives. It seems like people always look to dimish anything he's helped the team accomplish. "Yeah sure but the drive was aided by a bogus PI call". Again, I just want fairness. EJ was not great Sunday. But he did some good things and statistically was very similar to the same output we get weekly from Taylor. Did he throw some ridiculous passes and made bad decisions. ABSOLUTELY. Did he make some good ones too, ABSOLUTELY. I think both guys have potential and I'm happy both are here. Hopefully Taylor continues to develop, stays healthy and takes control of the starting job for the long term. If he does, I'd love to see EJ as the backup. If he doesn't EJ will have one more shot to grab the job himself. My biggest concern with Taylor at this point is durability. Running the way he does is going to lead to hits and injuries. He was dinged up in his first preseason game and that has lingered. That's a concern.

You might want to double check facts before posting this silliness. Wk 1 - 5 of 13 on 3rd down (Taylor) Wk2 - 4 of 13 on 3rd down (Taylor) Wk3 - 7 of 13 on 3rd down (Taylor) Wk4 - 3 of 16 on 3rd down (Taylor) Wk5 - 4 of 12 on 3rd down (Taylor) Wk6 - 5 of 13 on 3rd down (Manuel) Where's the magic? I know a lot of people here hate EJ, but you don't need to make stuff up. He does enough things poorly to legitimately criticize him without outright lies. And wasn't it you whose "inside source" said EJ was supposed to be cut by now? As I've said over and over, We are fortunate to have 2 developing QBs with some talent. Not sure why people have to rave about one (completely ignoring shortcomings) and bash the other (completely ignoring positives and successes).

I would submit that the reason Taylor was running and making those plays with his legs is because he was struggling to read the defense and hit open receivers during that game. The reason the Bills needed him to perform those late game miracles was his own ineffectiveness earlier in the game. Its great that he was able to get it done, but it doesn't seem to be something that a consistent offense can be built around. He needs to be better in the pocket and I think he can be with more time under center, more time with the starters (if they all get healthy) and more time in the offense. I am not bashing Taylor. I am saying EJ has shown some of the same flashes in the past and some of the same mistakes. The thing that sets Taylor apart from EJ so far is his quickness. When he decides to run, his quickness and elusiveness is amazing. EJ can scramble and get yards, but TT delivers those WOW plays.

Jets are the new Bullies in the AFC East
Maddog69 replied to Nihilarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm not sure I would guarantee that. Look at their schedule. They could conceivably lose 7-8 of their remaining games. I have a hard time putting them at 10 wins on the season. I just don't think they are as good as their record. Lots of teams get off to a hot start and them crumble when they hit the tough part of the season and the good teams turn it on. We will see. -
Go back and Watch the Carolina Game from 2013. Watch the Atlanta game in Toronto. He drove twice to win that game only to have it fumbled away by Chandler and Spiller. EJ isn't great, but the hyperbole here kills me. Taylor has been fun to watch at times, but he's not lighting up the world either. Lets be fair to both.

Jets are the new Bullies in the AFC East
Maddog69 replied to Nihilarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
1000% agree. Until someone knocks them off, the Pats* are the AFC east bullies. They have stomped every team in this division regularly and repeatedly for over a decade. Time will tell what the Jests are. They've done a good job so far. We will see if that keeps up. Personally I don't expect it to. But nobody knows. That's why they play the games. -
Like I said in the Shout box (and got made fun of for), how different is the game if we have Taylor, Watkins and Harvin and Cincy is without Dalton, Green and Sanu (plus their starting RT, CB and Safety and their #2 Running back). Injuries are killing this team right now. To expect all of the backups to come in and not miss a beat is unrealistic. Turn the tables with injuries and we crush the Bengals. If the Bills don't get healthy, none of the rest of it is going to matter.

Oh no, an NFL receiver had to adjust to a ball thrown in his direction. The horror. (OK, Sarcasm off). Not every pass thrown by NFL QBs is 100% spot on. Actually watching the NE vs INDY game last night was a good example. The first pass thrown by the Almighty Andrew Luck to his Tight End was exactly the same pass EJ threw to Clay. His TE adjusted and made a nice catch like Clay did. Does Andrew Luck suck to? Or is the irrational hate saved only for EJ? Nobody is saying he played great. He was adequate. I have seen MANY worse QB performances by our QBs over the years. I've said it numerous times. I don't see why we have to like one of our QBs and hate the other. Both have strengths and weaknesses. Both have some impressive physical abilities and both have potential. I'm happy we have both of them and I don't care which one plays on any given Sunday. I'm 100% behind either or both.

Actually, he already is. He has started 15 games so far in his career.
