Off Season Needs: Draft and Free Agency
Maddog69 replied to truth on hold's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I absolutely agree with this. There is absolutely no chance Taylor is not a Bill next year (unless the world ends or something terrible happens to Taylor). There is an extremely high probability that Taylor is the starter next year. After that it is up to him. While I am not 100% convinced he is the long term answer and can lead this team to a SuperBowl, I do think he performed as good or better than any of us could have expected and I see no reason to think he cannot improve on what he did this year. Maybe I'm wrong, and that's why they need to add a good QB to the roster either fairly high in the draft or in FA (i.e Kaepernick). That QB would battle with Taylor for the #1 job with the expectation that it's Tyrod's job to lose. If the other QB outperforms him, it would probably be a good thing since we have seen what Taylor can do. I had said last year that Cassel was brought in to set the bar for the other QBs to shoot for. That bar was not set very high and they both beat him out in camp. This offseason should be the same, except that Taylor set the bar at a much higher level. I think we are in a better position at QB than we've been in a very long time, but that doesn't mean we should not be looking to add to the competition at the position. -
I could not possibly care any less about this at all. Shady is fine. He's a Pennsylvania kid and loved playing in Philly. Had a good relationship with his fans and teammates and he stayed after to attend a party. No big issue. Nothing to see here.

Personality Traits in a Coach
Maddog69 replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There is not one personality blueprint that is successful. Look through all of the highly successful coaches and you will see many different personalities. My personal opinion is that the more fiery, confrontational, bombastic coaches have a shortly life span. That kind of crap gets old after a while. Whereas, I think a more cerebral guy like Marv Levy might take longer for players to warm up to him/believe in him but once they do, it can last for longer periods of time. -
#1 priority is determining if there is a QB in this draft worthy of taking and developing. If so, put a plan in place to go get him. otherwise, we have plenty of needs. OL, LB, S, WR, Pass rushing DE (I expect Mario to be gone). Big space eating NT to anchor the middle of Rex's defense. I hate to say it, but I think it gets worse before it gets better. They are in a rebuild. Probably why Rex wanted a 5 yr deal.
-
I hate this penalty. I liked it the old way. If a guy jumped and got back with out making contact, there was no penalty. I remember for a short time, they were calling a penalty on the OL if he obviously jumped after a go DL got into the neutral zone in an attempt to draw a penalty on the defense. I wish it would go back to the old way. The OL has to stay set regardless of what the defense does.
-
If we had Mack, Rex would've dropped him into pass coverage. P.S. - Watch the replays of his sacks. He should've been flagged for illegal use of hands: Hands to the face on at least 2 of them.
-
My thinking is this: Two previous defensive coordinators proved that the current roster of defensive players is good enough to have tremendous success on defense. This year the performance was not as good because Rex refused to adjust his scheme to maximize the talent on the roster. So the question becomes: Is it smarter to blow up a successful defensive roster to allow Rex to try to reassemble the roster to reach out past level of performance with the current roster. Or does it make more sense to keep the roster that has proven it can be successful and remove the bloated loudmouth who can't get the job done?

I've been saying for years that success does not happen strictly as a result of one component. Sustained success in the NFL requires all facets of the game to be strong. That said, a having a great QB will make up for deficiencies in other areas and will bring some level of success. But saying "All you need is a QB" is not accurate.

Sporting News: Tyrod Is Rex's Best Bills Deal
Maddog69 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It was reported at the time that Rex wanted Taylor. Rex said he even tried to trade for him when he was with the Jets. -
The main problems with a "Ground and Pound" or run focused offense like the Bills have are: 1.)When you get behind more 2-3 scores in a game. At that point, you need a more pass focused offense and a QB who can scan the field for open receivers. Tyrod hasn't yet proven to be consistently capable of doing this. (Not saying he won't be able to develop this ability, I just haven't seen it enough yet) 2.) The two minute drill. When you get in the last 2 minutes of a close game an need to score, you need to be able to consistently pass the ball. Just like above, Taylor hasn't yet shown the ability to do this consistently. The tempo of the offense is also an issue. They are bad at clock management and slow to get plays in and get to the line of scrimmage. That will need to improve.

Bills Release Mulligan and Promote O'Leary

That's what I was thinking. From all reports, he was excellent in helping to keep Watt under control. -
Had enough with the Defense this year
Maddog69 replied to Billsfan1972's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The defense has not been as dominant as expected this year, but they were absolutely tremendous in the late part of that game on Sunday. They have had stretches in games where they have been excellent and then there are stretches where they just cant stop anybody. It's frustrating, but I feel like, given another offseason in this defense and with Rex being able to switch out some pieces on the roster that don't fit well for what he wants to do, I think the defense could be great next year. Same for the offense. We might be at the beginning of an exciting time for the Bills. -
I have ZERO concern that the Bills will lose Taylor. I would expect them to do a contract restructure this offseason removing that voided year, adding a few more years and giving TT a nice signing bonus. It would not surprise my if they did try to just do a 2 year extension (keeping TT hear for 3 more years) and add something like 30-40m in New money over the 3 years (including the 1 year left on current contract). It also wouldn't surprise me if the Pegula's just backed up the Brinks truck and locked him up for 4-5 years. Either way, I expect Taylor to be here a while. (I would still advocate drafting a QB in the early part of the draft to develop behind him.

I wonder if it is more of a question of limiting what is being asked to Taylor. Roman takes a lot of grief, but it seems that he is doing a good job of protecting Tyrod with a strong run game and giving easy reads to make.

Tyrod has done a pretty good job this year, but let's know start comparing him to one of the best QBs in the history of the NFL just yet.

The age old debate...QB vs OL
Maddog69 replied to Canadian Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You need both. I'm not sure it matters in which order you do it. A strong OL would certainly help speed up the learning process for a young/inexperienced QB. So maybe build the strong OL first, but don't pass up on a good QB if one is available before the line is fully built. -
My guess would be Walter Powell (a WR that I didn't even know was on the roster. Or one of the backup OL. Ikard or Ryan Groy.
-
It will end when we find a great QB and a coach smart enough to know how to use him.
-
I voted for Taylor over Hoyer. But Tyrod isn't great either. I voted for our RB crew. They are solid. I voted for their WRs because I think Hopkins and Watkins are roughly equal (they tend to throw it up for Hopkins more than we normally do for Sammy). But our depth sucks. Woods is crap this year and Hogan is Blah. I like Cecil Shorts and Nate Washington more than our two and 3.

This season 100% comes down to coaching, nothing more
Maddog69 replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly. So many people want to find a singular source of blame for our losses and there isn't one. Each game has been different but the common themes are: 1.)Coaching: Lack of discipline. Poor playcalling on both sides of the ball. Clock management, etc 2.) GM: not building a roster that fits the schemes of the coaching staff. Not adding depth 3.) Injuries: The offense was seriously challenged by key injuries in the first half of the season and now the defense is having those same issues 4.) QB: Taylor has played well in stretches and not well in stretches. The hope is that he continues but more needs to be done to address the position going forward. 5.) Depth: Our depth players have not been good (for the most part). Our Linebackers suck (or atleast suck in Rex's system). Our Safeties have been a disappointment once Aaron Williams went down. Graham is OK at best. Rambo has made a couple big plays but overall has been bad. Duke is terrible. 6.) Stupid/selfish Penalties. I listed this under coaching but the players need to be accountable as well. Hughes should be fined a game check for every 15 yd penalty. -
absolutely. Guys have done much worse and gotten back in the league.

If BB & NE switch entire coaching staff who wins?
Maddog69 replied to ALLEN1QB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If NE still has Brady, the *Pats probably still win. -
I'll take Rex's anger on the sidelines over Jauron's (and Marrone's, and Mularkey's) comatose persona on the sidelines.
