What about Travis Henry, the forgotten RB?
nick in* england replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good call. But, don't forget he has been distinctly above average the past two years. I watched a segment a few months ago - i think before the season started - about how being a 1,000yard rusher was no longer the benchmark for being a top quality NFL RB. The quality of play and style of play has increased that to be top rated back you need to get at least 1,350yards on a consistent year on year basis. Last year 18 NFL RBs rushed for over 1000 yards - Look at the names at the lower end of the 1,000 yard rushers: Eddie George 1031, Domanick Davis 1031, Anthony Thomas 1024, Kevan Barlow 1024. We're not crying out for their services right? Travis was the 11th rated NFL RB with 1356 yards. The year before that 17 NFL RB rushed for over 1000 yards. That year Travis was in the top 5 with over 1400 yards. By modern standards Travis Henry had proved to us that he was a top calibre running back amassing comfortably 'above average' rushing yards and performance that - while not pro-bowl calibe per se -are something we all were and should be proud of and impressed by. Look at this season where we have blamed Travis early on for being a bag of stevestojan - is it a coincidence that Travis has poor showings and the OL was immature in those first 4 games, couldn't block a toilet let alone 7 angry men in football uniforms? We've been quick to slag off TH for is abysmal pass blocking skills - rightly so they suck, but we knew that from the last two years right? - but why don't we laud him for being a very good NFL RB (his misfirings early on can also be attributed to accidents or bad luck in some cases). The organisation have not made it easy for Travis to succeed this season, with Willis breathing down his neck (I am yet to call Willis a better back because he needs more than 4 100 yard games to prove to me he is) and the lack of committment to the 2 backs in the backfield at the same time. Its just senseless to me to have what appeared for 2 seasons to be a legit talent rot on the bench. The only loser will be the Bills if we continue this trend cos when he skips town and we are picking up the tab for cutting him, there is every chance he goes to Miami or something equally vile and rips the field up for them for over 1350 per season. And we'd have nothing but the shape of his butt worn into the bench. We need to get value out of him in the offseason - so investment is needed now. -
[O-Line] I dunno if anyone caught this

Jennings is a lock to leave this season. I really don't think we have seen enough consistent quality out of him to justify our paying him serious money to stay on. I think other teams may well be tempted to shell out $$$ on him - but for the Bills it's an unjustifiable luxury for continuitys sake only. I think if we can get a 1st rounder we need to pick up an LT. If we don't lets see the Bills dig into their pockets and sign a big name LT to come in and start. We have the skill players - now lets build the line up to match their talents. -

And therein lies the problem. TH sees himself as a pro-bowler, not a backup. Without playing time all you get from him is stevestojan. If we increase his playimg time (and by no means do I suggest he is the starter or anywhere near - rather in on 20-25% of snaps, used as a gadget player or decoy) we all get better value from the situation. If we continue to use him so poorly why bother keeping him at all? Cut him today and promote a RB from the PS. Better to have someone who wants to play and will try than a no good whining pedophile POS former pro-bowler. -
Drew Is An Average QB, BUT The 4-6
nick in* england replied to Bill from NYC's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
TD hardly fleeced the Falcons... The market value of any player is - whatever the market will bear. The were no suitable FA WRs that year and PP had a breakout season. It's not TD fault that Price needs an all-star the other side of the field to be productive. -

What about Travis Henry, the forgotten RB?
nick in* england replied to TC in St. Louis's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That analogy is pure wrong. Travis wants to start. While we keep him nailed to the pine for 95% of the plays, his morale drops and when he comes on the field we get about 30% of what he is capable of delivering... If we used him more - we'd see his effort increase, his output increase and his trade value increase. Someone in the FO needs to tell Travis that he's gonna be off the team come the end of the year and he needs to put some more effort in if he want the $$$ he thinks he deserves. -
Alright. Here is a good question.
nick in* england replied to daquixers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
An interesting thing to ponder this one. I am firmly of the opinion that we need to keep Drew around next season - I think he can be instumental in helping JP Losman develop as an NFL QB and I think he is by far good enough to be a superb backup in what amounts to the final year(s) of his career. Drew has flashed of good (not great) play mixed in with some very average to poor play. It's not enough even if we win every remaining game to say that starting Drew helps us more than starting JP does. JP needs to get into the starting lineup and take 1st team reps throughout the offseason - no matter how Drew plays the remainder of this year. I do think it is a mistake to kiss Drew goodbye though. If Losman has happy feet or struggles early next season (high chance he gets injured based on his style of play) we need a veteran like Drew there to pick up the team and keep momentum while JP gets over yips or injury. -

ICE and I disagreed yesterday about how we could use TH more... I think it makes sense for both him and the Bills to make use of a former pro-bowl caliber player. It hurts his trade value sitting on the bench - and cutting him will cost us as his salary next year pops up to $1.25 million. -
to make sure

That is apalling.

Does Mike Martz need reminding of the atrocious security blunders that lead to the only terrorist attck on US soil?? Mike - go check out recent history - it is a GREAT thing that the US authorities have improved their screening procedures since 9/11 - they guarantee you own safety, the safety of your players, the people in your organisation, the flight attendants, pilots, airport staff, civilians on the ground. I'm not sorry it is onconvenient for you. I am sorry that you chose to B word about it you small minded selfish !@#$. -

A great set of points there Kelly. What concerns me about Lindell is exactly that he has not been tested on long FGs. In facts TMQ regularly laments our 'preposterous punts' and that is directly as a result of the lack of faith we have in Lindells ability to kick it long. We would be much closer to a winning record if we could covert FG trys from 45+ yards up to 55 yards. Similarly - one stat that is not reflected in our quality ST play this season is the preponderance to call for the punting unit when we are inside the opponents half. It is frustrating to see us have to kick the ball away for net gains of only 15-20 yards. This conservative play calling on STs is a real frustration and we must overcome these situations to be successful. Moorman is clearly one of the top punters in the NFL - helped and hindered by the winds in Buffalo - but when we talk about STs play - I want us to be clear we are talking coverage and returning only. Our play calling is a little too conservative (pooch KOs and preposterous punts) to say that we get a 'complete' performance from STs. Credit where credit is due tho - April does appear to have this unit on the rise. We have to replace Lindell for someone with a stronger leg this offseason - kicking is a critical part of the game - and I don't think we can carry a weak legged lindell for very much longer.

Why the complaints on McGahee's 'speed'
nick in* england replied to ICE's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
OK fair point - and I agree on the 'what have you done for me lately' point. But if we don't give him a fair opportuniry (which could be affored to him with some more inventive play selections) the he'll continue to do nothing. While we don't have THAT much invested in Travis cos he's an idiot when it comes to signing contracts and screwing 15 year old girls, it would still make a lot of sense to get SOMETHING out of a guy who has proved in previous season to be a 1,300+ yard running back. He's not going to be a Buffalo Bill come the off season - if we cut him, then fine - screw the lazy SOB he can rot on our bench. If we want to trade him and get some value back - we need to invest a little more in him to make sure we get a good return.... I'm happy to disagree - cos we are doing just fine based on Willis' previous performances - but I think we could turn it up a level by using Travis inventively.
