I don't really think Collins having experience matters when he is so limited and frankly not good anymore.

I spent some time thinking about the 53 recently and it was harder yet more fun than I expected.  Here are some differences I see:

I would keep Davidson and in turn release Gilliam.  I know it isn't likely but Gilliam is such a limited contributor offensively I think Davidson can be the 3rd TE and have Morris fill the H-Back/ST Ace role.  More realistically, I would be okay with cutting Collins and keeping Davidson.

I had Hamler over Shavers.  I know Shavers has had a great camp but here is my thought process on this - Hamler can play but usually gets hurt.  I would keep Hamler until the inevitable and then promote Shavers from the PS.

I think Edwards gets cut but is immediately resigned once someone (Bishop maybe) goes to IR.  With Bishop being injured I find it difficult to think they will keep effectively 3 safeties for week 1.

Why predict the roster until we see who shines in the preseason?

Joe B is very predictable w his roster projections every year.  Never goes out on a limb.  I guess McDermott is very predictable too.

I see no reason for Gilliam to take up a roster spot.  What is his upside and value?

If Davidson and Morris have a higher ceiling, go with 4 TE’s.  That’s certainly not unheard of.  In today’s NFL very few teams have a FB.  Unless we have Kyle Juzcyk or Sam Gash the position is a non factor.

As for WR I am a big Claypool fan. If his injury isn’t serious, get him reps in the preseason and see what he’s got.  Same with Shorter.  He has great size.  Let’s get him reps.  And I am glad we aren’t hearing the “let’s cut MVS” nonsense.  The guy is an NFL receiver.  End of story.

Keeping 5 backup O linemen seems excessive.  I would keep an extra LB on the roster.  Spector can’t play 2 qtrs w/o getting injured.  Dion Jones is still solid if not great anymore.

You need veterans at every position group to lead the team.

We are talking about arm talent, not a single game.

Caleb Williams has been horrible in some college games.... point?

I agree about Williams.  He was part of the hype machine that is big time college football programs.  And he sat on the bench and cried after losses.

I am excited to see what he can do in the NFL though.  He does get the juices flowing a bit more then say Bo Nix does.

Murray has a good arm.  Most guys playing in the NFL should have that.  Except for Chad Pennington, of course.

Not a ton of overly notable items from today's practice. They also wrapped up a bit early. Offense and Defense took turns with some solid plays here and there for much of it, but tough to tell a lot as they were going like 3/4 speed for a lot of it.

    With that said -

As reports have stated, the Josh to MVS connection seems to be ramping up. He found MVS deep early on and also had a nice attempt and route on a deep post that got broken up.

I noticed today that Josh was very focused on patience within the play, and often took the 3rd or 4th read on many of the pass plays for a solid but unspectacular completion and yardage gain.

Shakir was Mr. dependable all over the field today, getting open in short and medium zones, making himself QB friendly and securing the grab (he must have had 6 catches out there in 11 on 11) and some decent RAC.

The Bills edge rushers flashed at times (Von, Solomon, Smoot in particular) in getting good angles around the edge that may have affected a few of the plays.

I see no path for Isabella, Shorter, Claypool, Johnson, Keys, etc. to make this team, beyond some sort of practice squad stashing. It feels like IF they keep 6 WR's, the final spot will be down to Hamler and Shavers based on what I've seen.

Shorter has been injured it seems since he was drafted last year.  That's too bad because he showed something last year in the preseason when he was able to play.  And Claypool seems to have been nicked up for at least the past 10 days.  Some guys it seems have no luck and always seem to be nicked.

You just have to wonder how Brett Favre played well over 250 consecutive games.  When a guy like Shorter is always banged up.

Uh, Kyler Murray also objectively has incredible arm talent. You don't become the #1 overall pick at 5'7 as a QB because you don't have crazy arm talent. Not to mention he was drafted in the MLB. He throws faster than Caleb, actually. I strongly dislike Kyler Murray but you can't discount the dudes ability to throw the ball.

In 2021, Kyler lead the league in deep passing accuracy

In 2022, he was second in "regular accuracy" according to PFF

He has dealt with horrific coaching and REALLY bad rosters. Your statement is patently false.

    https://www.si.com/nfl/cardinals/analysis/analytics-show-kyler-murray-was-better-than-you-think-last-season

Murray was absolutely awful in the Cardinals playoff game against the Rams a few years back.  He has been good at times.  But overall average to a little bit above.

He can be exciting to watch at least.  I think the Bills should beat the Cardinals handily on opening day.  Although Vegas doesn't seem to think so as we are only -6 1/2 which I find puzzling.

Sorry, I see how that come across now.  I thought it was clear which players I was talking about.  Solomon is my prediction to make the team.  I just wasn't sure why you thought they would keep Olofushio(sp?) just bc he was drafted.

He played on an overhyped overrated Washington team that got their asses whupped by my Michigan Wolverines.  They could have played us on a neutral field 100 times.  And we would have beaten them at least 90 times.  That being said, I have no idea if this guy is a future NFL player or not.  I do like Dorian Williams' game, probably better then McDermott does.  And that needs to change for good old Sean.

So to me, many of these “intimidating” plays ARE dirty. Watching videos from the 70s/80s/90s and there are so many cheap shots taken. Guys getting literally dragged down by their collars who aren’t even involved in the play. Has the league over corrected, perhaps, but it does make the game more exciting. Also, there are too many of these former players who can’t walk or have severe problems because of all of the shots they took to the head.

I see both sides of the coin.  Don't like the guys from yesteryear having all the cognitive problems from their 40's on.  Very sad how Dave Duerson, Andre Waters and Junior Seau killed themselves after getting CTE.  (there maybe more that I am not aware of.)  My son had a real good college football career playing D line/edge.  He pulled a hammy at his pro day and did not get a shot in the pros.  It pissed me off big time because I think he was good enough.  He had a lot of injuries starting when he was probably 9 or 10 when he got concussed and still made like 10 tackles in the first half of a pee wee game.  And me and his mother had to take to get him examined at the hospital at halftime.  He broke his ankle in HS and tore a knee in college.  But came back strong each time.  And had a bunch of other less serious stuff too.  But I have thought that at least he won't get his body destroyed for the next 10 years, including his head playing in the pros.  So there is some good to come out of it.  And he works in the financial world now.  But I still would have loved for him to get the chance.

But I don't think the game is more exciting today, then back when Jim Kelly, etc played.  The game has always been exciting, including the violence and intimidating hits.  Do you remember Leonard Smith for the Bills?  It was exciting back then.  And its exciting now.  Don't know how old you are, but football has always been an awesome sport to watch as far back as I can remember, and I started watching in the mid 70's regularly as a kid.

If you want to see a crazy game from a violence standpoint compared to today.  Watch on Big 10 replay if you can find it, the Purdue-Kansas State Alamo Bowl at the end of the 1999 season.  Drew Brees was playing for Purdue.  (30 minute replay)  What was legal from a hitting standpoint was ridiculous back then.  LOL

The Bills gave up a 1st and a 4th for Diggs.  Aiyuk is at least as good as he was at the time of the trade.  How is giving up a first insanity?  Especially when we have two 2nds and the 1st will be near the end of the first round.  This offense will regress without a true #1 WR.

Disagree about Aiyuk vs Diggs of 4 years ago.

That being said, this offense is going to be excellent.  I love the weapons we have.

And I don’t want guys who are bitching about their contracts.  It’s a team game.  Josh Allen gets that more than anyone.  These guys all think they should get big money.  And then the team has no money left to pay other good players and your team is stuck winning 6-9 games every year.  I want guys who want to win first and foremost.  That should matter still.

If Hollins, and Shavers are above MVS on the depth chart, I can't imagine what kind of value he would have. In a competition for a #6WR, I'd think they'd be looking for someone who a) played ST, b) would be seen as a younger developmental prospect, and c) could fill a more unique role. MVS doesn't offer any of that, and he'd be pretty redundant behind Coleman/Hollins/Shavers. And literally every other WR on the roster offers at least one of a, b, or c.

How the hell is Shavers better than anyone?  He hasn’t played an NFL snap.  Go with MVS Claypool Shakir Hollins Samuel Coleman, and put Shavers and Hamler on the practice squad and let’s get the party started.  MVS is an NFL WR.  He has made big catches.  He has length and speed.  Enough said.

Absolutely hate it.   If they were worried about the lack of kick returns they could have just made the endzone out of bounds on kickoffs.   It doesnt look like professional football in the least.

Agree It was a lot of nothingness.  There were no holes to run through for the receiving team.  It looked like a run play up the middle every time.  Pretty boring.

Back 20-30 years ago, kickoffs were from the 30 yard line and there were lots of returns.  It was an exciting play.  The league never knows what it wants.  What it should want is competitive physical football.  They want 18 game seasons.  Make rosters at 60

players all active for every game.  And a practice squad also for when you lose guys to injuries.  College teams sometimes have 100 guys dressed for a game.  And the product is amazing.

Just read that article before coming here to post about it.

Found it interesting that it has been on the books for a while and the NFL was just clarifying it. Now they need to take that next step and teach officials how to toss the hanky when Miami's guys are heading towards the LOS full steam before the ball is snapped.

Worthy is getting a lot of heat for being a feather weight that DBs can easily jam into next week or easily knock off his route and timing.

It’s interesting how all the rule changes are always in favor of the offense.  We can give Miami forward motion if they will bring back the Mel Blount forearm club to the head.  Would love to see Tyreek writhing on the ground.

it’s so interesting for us old time football fans how the game has changed.  No one ever talks about how good of a hitter someone is.  We signed Kareem Jackson, who will lay people out, and people are concerned that he is a “dirty player”.  Some intimidation in the defensive backfield is a good thing.  It’s football.  A gladiators game.  I guess Roger didn’t get the memo.

Right now Cam Lewis is our number 1 slot depth. That’s more of his natural position. He’s played every DB position though. The Justin Jefferson play we all remember he was playing safety.

He’s not really special teams depth. He’s a key player. I don’t see any other slot depth on the roster. He’s a roster lock.

If he is a key player.  Lets hope he keeps getting better, and stays injury free.

To Quote Bill Parcells, "It's a replacement business"

having said that none of what you said matters because the pool of athletes that can play this sport (all pro Sports) is so small it is not comparable to any other industry.

I loved that you referred to guys in the NFL as "Some are really good athletes"  that is cute.

The league is about the players and they deserve the money.  None of us watch the games for any other reason.

Most of the players are interchangeable to be quite honest.  The league is about the teams and the organizations.  And yes the players comprise the teams.  But so do coaches, trainers, scouts, owners and GM's.  Have you watched Hard Knocks NYG?  I find the inner workings of a football organization far more fascinating that watching Aaron Rodgers throw passes in shorts and joking on the sidelines with his teammates.

Like I said in my earlier post, certain players are awesome to watch.  (Josh Allen, hopefully Keon Coleman, maybe Dalton Kincaid if we use him like Utah did.)  But most are just players that are replaceable.  Its the game of football and how its played and set up between all the teams is what I find exciting.  When I was young I may have cared more about individual players.  Now I love the games and the point spreads, and the competition between teams.

  15. Milano is as tough and competitive a player as there is.  He will go as hard as he can for as long as he can with his career.  I see him playing at a high level for at least another 3-4 seasons if he can stay reasonably healthy.

it’s been 4 days of training camp. He needs to knock the rust off.  And the guys he is covering are good too.  No one on defense dominates every snap in today’s NFL.  It just doesn’t happen.

if Milano needs a little time to get up to speed, we have Spector Williams Morrow Jones and the rookie from UW. We are deep at LB and across the entire roster (Maybe could use another boundary CB depending on how solid Ingram looks)

  16. 2 hours ago, Buffalo_Stampede said:

Cam plays every DB position. He doesn’t play them good but he’s decent enough that he makes sense to keep on the roster.

I thought he improved last year.

He isn’t horrible.  But he doesn’t make many game changing plays either.  After this many years, he understands the Bills defense and must be decent on special teams.  But there must be some upside to keep a guy on an NFL roster.  I have never liked McDermott’s philosophy of keeping guys primarily for special teams.  They should have some value as backups on O and D too. I think of Siran Neal and Tyler Matekevich.  What a waste.  They could not really play D.  And they were meh on ST’s and Neal was worse than that at the end.     I hope the bottom of the roster is stronger going forward.  I think it will be.

    How is Hollins ascending?

He's this years Kumerow. He will offer next to nothing in pass game.

What's wrong with a group of big WRs for a change? Larger catch radius and maybe better chance at 50/50 balls. Shakir and Samuel are fine in the smaller WR role.

All that said if it came down to MVS vs Claypool I think I'd take my chances on a reborn Claypool. Hopefully they keep both.

I'd rather they keep an extra WR and carry one less safety. They can sign Hyde in a heart beat if they get thin at safety during the year.

From all reports Hollins is having a strong camp so far and has turned into somewhat of a leader since coming to the team.  I will be very happy w a WR group of Shakir Coleman MVS Samuel Hollins and Claypool.  Shavers and Hamler can go on the PS if they have any game.  It’s a much deeper group than last year.  Beane knew what he was doing getting rid of Diggs and Davis.  Our roster is loaded.  And if the defense stays reasonably healthy, we are in the top 4-5 teams in the NFL again.

I am so excited!  Let’s go Bills.

    Cool Story.

These athletes are like 1% of the population and their output produces billions of dollars for old owners who do nothing but ripoff their fans.

There are so few people on the planet that could play this game at this level and only for a few years at that.  The players deserve every penny they get and they should do what they have to in order to make sure they are getting it.  The nfl union is super weak because the players do not have a backbone but at least individually they will pretend to hold out to get paid.  If only they did that collectively.

but if you think you or I or any of us has any similar relationship to this situation go ahead and try it.

You really worship these players don't you?  Sure they can run fast, and some are really good athletes.  But they can all be replaced by someone else who does the same thing.  A lot of them have a real inflated sense of their worth.

But Its like that in a lot of industries in today's world.  Everything thinks they are special.  Most in any field really aren't.  Same in the NFL.  Only a very few are transcendental talents in their era.  Fortunately, we have one named Josh Allen, who is just a normal guy.  Lets go Bills.

Nobody should make it…. Milano should NOT make it. You have to play most of the previous year is criteria one.

Bernard needs another season to have some sort of consistency to make the list. He doesn’t even have one full season.

I do think Dawkins deserves it though…His last season plus his career together is pretty darn impressive….

It has been a complaint of tons of fans all year…. The Bills have one primo player. Josh Allen and that’s it….

We used to have Tre, Hyde and Poyer but they are long gone….Now Diggs too…Morse was a high level red chip player as well…gone.

I don’t think the Bills can add many players for next season either…They won’t put a rookie on the team unless it is some kind of unimaginable season. I doubt many second years players are on the list either. Possibly candidates imho: McGovern if he has an excellent season at C (but It’s still a long shot I think. Even many Bills fans do not know he had a magnificent season as a first year Bill. Maybe Cook? But it is hard if you’re a one dimensional player. He’d certainly have to catch better. Samuel? I doubt it because I don’t think many fans know who he is yet. It would to be magnificent again. Ed is not good enough, Groot as well….Von is not going to light it up. Bernard is still too unknown but possibly with a magnificent season. Milano might do it but it would have to clear pro bowl play for around 16 games. I just don’t see it next year either…. Maybe the following year though…. If players like I mentioned above have two great seasons in a row they stand a great chance…

Its not a fan vote is it?  I assume its a collection of NFL Network people who follow the NFL, right?  Terrell Bernard had a monster year last year.  Who cares if its only one year.  As for Milano, his body of work over the years most definitely makes him a top 100 player.  And I would argue that Milano is a top 50 player in the league.  Bernard is close to it also.  There are just not a lot of great defensive players in the league right now.  Its an offense based league.  But we have several very good defensive players.  Ed Oliver also.  But not as dominant as Milano and Bernard.  But still good.  Rasul Douglas is a very good corner.  So is Benford.  You don't win as many games as we have over the past 5 years without good players.

Do you have the entire list?

I was skiing with my kids in Colorado.  I think it was Christmas vacation time.  We get home the night of the Steelers game, which I had recorded.  And then watched in horror as we played awful.  I remember a bad Bledsoe pick.  And a missed Ryan Lindell FG from 29 yards.  And Willie Parker going off.  That entire era was mostly bleak.  But I never missed watching a game.  In fact the last game I missed was the season finale in 1994 when we were already eliminated from playoff contention.  Lets go Buffalo.
