AJ Green is available when the Bills Pick....
Trader replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would make a deal. I do not think that Green helps the Bills beat the Jets. I don't know that he would help the Pats against the Jets either. The Jet's corners mostly shut down the vertical game unless the ball is perfectly thrown. The way to win against the Jets is with your Tight Ends. The Bills are lacking there. The Pats have the tight ends but Hernandez was limited against the Jets and Gronkowski and Brady miscommunicated during several key moments in the Jets game. Green is a very slight guy and I think he would have a tough go against Revis. -
Are you rooting for the Jets or the Steelers?

Steelers and Packers. Pack to win it all. -

The Problem with free agents and a team with the Bills prospects: The only reason for a player to come to a team like the Bills is if the player is more motivated by cash than by winning. Good players will tend to cluster together on the teams with the best prospects for winning a championship if they are truly motivated by winning. Players that are all about the cash will go to teams who will overpay. I don't expect the Bills to acquire meaningful free agents at this stage of their development. -
JJ Watt from Wisconsin is also coming out. We will not likely have a shot at Fairley I could live with JJ Watt (DL Wisconsin) in a trade down situation It would be nice to get one of the Wisconsin offensive linemen or their Tight End as well.

To: "But, why didn't we trade down?" people
Trader replied to OCinBuffalo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
But ... butt...butt New England trades down a lot. Their roster is better than ours. Is it possible that the Bills do not try very hard? Is New England that much smarter or are they just lucky to get more calls from other teams than we do? -
2nd round and the search for a starting
Trader replied to John from Riverside's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There are teams picking below the Bills who may want to trade up to get a QB. Assuming the Bills do not want Newton who is the only QB I would consider at 3. I would trade down to the top half of the first round for extra picks. The defensive lineman for Ohio state (Heyward or Heywood?) or JJ Watt DE could be availabe there. Perhaps Costanzo or Carmini or another OT. Am extra second or third would be nice to move back into the late first round. If they could get a DE and an OT in the mid and late first it would be great. -
We'll Be Drafting Our Franchise QB This Year
Trader replied to Bangarang's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think it's 50-50 that they take Newton. They do of course need DL, OT, and TE and numerous other posiitons. If they elect to go DT in the first and OT in the second then I like Andy Dalton from TCU in the 3rd or 4th round. Dalton has won big games over several years. He shows great leadership. I was very impressed with him against Wisconsin. I thought he was outstanding in that game. He is not a one year wonder either. -
If Merriman is successful it would be a big Kudo for Nix in my mind. Nix needs to ace this offseason fo the Bills to have a prayer.

I wonder if the Bills asked Thurman what he thought about Spiller or Lynch before they drafted those players. Or if they asked Kelly before they drafted Losman or Edwards, Or Joe D before they drafted Mike Williams. The best decision makers I have known in any field consulted multiple sources, weighed all the evidence and then made a decision. I wonder what the process is for the Bills in the draft or if they strictly rely on the opinions of their own scouts some of whom are very young and do not seem to have a great deal of experience. I wonder about the Bills due diligence regarding these things. Anyone in a positon to know who can shed light on this? Wouldn't it be a good idea to bring these players in and watch some film. I know that Kelly met with Tebow before the draft I wonder if he was on a mission for the Bills.

Both SI and GBNreport have Blaine Gabbert going #1
Trader replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would really worry about drafting a QB who has not won a championship or even a bowl game with the first overall pick. They likely mean somewhere in the first round. -
good news we still can draft Andrew Luck
Trader replied to freester's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Actually you have outlined a strategy similar to New England's that has appeared to work fairly well. How about instead we draft a cornerback, Wide receiver and a running back 1,2,3, then use the middle rounds to take some division 3 players then sign some tight ends in free agency that can't run or block. It appears to me that they are doing just fine in the Andrew Luck race. The Bills might even be the favorites in Vegas to win the Luck lottery. -
The Bills do not make calls they interfere with nap time. They do take calls however, and they return calls to teams if they leave messages on voicemail... eventually.

The reason Fairley went unblocked so often

Can we cease to use the expression, "One year wonder", for guys that just won the SEC Championship and the National Championship? Better a,"one year wonder",than, "never been a wonder". -
Is it possible Spiller just can't learn how to pass block?
Trader replied to ShipUPride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Unable - Spiller is really pretty small could he block a blitzing corner? likely, a safety - some of them, a LB - he would have to trip him. DL? he would be a speed bump. Unwilling? some pretty good running backs never blocked - Jim Brown and Oj Simpson are two of them, but Spiller is not OJ nor is he Jim Brown. Spiller is a Scat back and a slot receiver. We may have drafted Roscoe Parrish all over again except in round 1. I would trade him for Starks or LeGarett Blount. I might even trade him for Marshawn Lynch. I would trade him for a decent Tight End. Did we really need this guy? -
I will go on the record. Newton is a top 5 pick or a top ten pick. It will depend on the Combine, interviews and perhaps any new information that is revealed about his character. If I were the Bills brain trust and the Combine results were solid I would take him at 3 or trade him to a team that wants him for additional picks. He would not come cheap.
-
After tonight and the combine you just might get your wish. I have the feeling that Cam Newton will fill a lot of stadiums before his career is over. The excitement over this BCS game is huge. Just try to buy a ticket on stub hub for it.

Saints would have offered a 3rd round pick
Trader replied to zevo's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Nix as GM ranks about 29th in the NFL at this point. As far as I am concerned this is a make or break year for him. The Bills need multiple players this year at key positions. The village idiot could have success with the top five players in this draft. The key is going to be getting good players in the rest of the draft and in free agency. they need to come out of this year with five new guys at critical positions who can play. I don't care if it's the draft or free agency or trades. To date I am not impressed with the personnel side of this regime. If our GM is not the,"smartest guy in room", then he needs to make up for it with hard work and dedication to the task along with leadership. He needs to take strong positions on players and cajole a tight fisted and reluctant management team to ante up. A lot of fans are disgruntled and many others are on the verge of walking away from this mess. -
Colin Kaepernick looks real good to me
Trader replied to Buffalonian-at-Heart's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And therein lies the problem. The windup telegraphs the direction. Maybe not a huge problem in college where receivers are more open but NFL defenses are much quicker and cover tighter and will jump those telegraphed throws. Compare his release with that of Cam Newton's tomorrow who has a tighter and quicker release in spite of the fact that both are tall. M -
Of course they want to win. One look at Ralph's face after they beat the Dolphins will tell you that. Winning is just not their main objective it is a supporting goal. Winning helps you raise revenue and it is good unless it costs more to win than you get back in revenue. In a town where your ability to sell luxury seats is handicapped the effect of winning is somewhat limited. The primary objective now is to increase the value of the Buffalo Bills franchise to prepare it to be sold or auctioned off. The "cash to the cap", principle supported that goal nicely. I believe that Wilson is also interested in his legacy among his peer gorup - the other owners . I think he gets a great deal of satisfaction in showing other owners how it should be done.
-
Winning is important because it is an activity that supports the primary goal of revenue. No where in my post do I suggest that winning is not important. Newton does not have to start he only has to play. Remember the way the Jets used their back up QB in the process of running up 275 rushing yards on the Bills.
-
I believe the Bills primary objective this off season will be to raise the team revenue and increase ticket sales especially the prime seating. The statistic that is most important to them is that they are 29th in the league in a market where the ticket prices are low. I do believe that that winning is a secondary objective to selling tickets, merchandise and concessions. Winning a championship? yes it's a long term objective because if the team makes it all the way to the championship the opportunity to sell merchandise is huge. Management always hopes to win a Championship but hope is not a strategy. The immediate goal is to create a lot of buzz around the team that will generate revenue. Competing for a playoff spot late in the season is a great way to sell tickets but rrealistically we are competing in the AFC East and that is not going to happen for a several years. Attracting a fan base in Canada is critical to the real mission. Who might the Bills draft that would accomplish this mission? Acquiring a big name player like Owens worked well in the recent past. What one player could the Bills draft who would fire up a potential fan base in Toronto, Rochester, Syracuse and Erie? who could sell merchandise all over the country thus creating a national fan base. What player could increase the value of this franchise?

Who do you think is the safest pick in the Draft
Trader replied to Phlegm Alley's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The corner from LSU or Green are the safest. QB is always a roll of the dice. Bbb -
I could live with Mallett he played well enough to beat Ohio State which is as close to an NFL Defense as you can get in college. The Bills will need to address offensive line problems since he is below average in mobility. He has a cannon for an arm though.

Pocket Passer vs. Athletic Scramblers
Trader replied to WVUFootball29's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Your analysis is very well thought out and I do believe that it is valid based on the. "history" of NFL QB's. The only issue I have with the analysis is that it is very similar to what military leaders do at war colleges. They become highly skilled at breaking down and analyizing the, "last war". If the analysis you have offered is directed at Cam Newton then I would offer that Newton just might be a new kind of player. Newton is bigger and stronger than Michael Vick and already is a more accurate passer with a better release. Newton has leadership ability. I don't know if Newton has the ability, "to pick apart an NFL defense" The fact that Newton is an athletic freak of nature does not mean that he cannot do it either. I find that the QB's who can read defenses well usually have more time to do it along with very good wide receivers who manage to come down with the ball when they force it into double coverage. If I had a choice of QB's this draft I would draft Luck first. One of the things I like about Luck is that he is highly mobile (400 + yards rushing this season). Newton is Luck only faster, more elusive and his arm is just as good. Luck is also a very bright guy with great grades in Engineering. I doubt that Newton can match Luck in the classroom. Most very good NFL QB's however are not exactly MENSA material. I offer you Rothlesberger, Bradshaw and Jim Kelly as examples. Luck will not be an option for the Bills so it's not muck use to pine over not getting him. Newton might be an option. I want to see the combine and the Oregon game before forming my final opinion but right now I have him in the lead.
